Such a good movie! I love the story and the chemistry between the actors. Everybody stays true to their nature, but it ends up being needed in the end. Evelyn is a damsel in distress at the end, but Rick was also one in the beginning. Evelyn is out of her element in the field, but is the most level-headed person in the film. Rick is naturally action hero, barging in there face first, guns blazing, getting your friend shot in the ass. Jonathan is the bumbling side kick with a knack for pick-pocketing, and whose ancient Egyptian is a touch rusty. Without any one of them at the end though, everything goes to hell!

The Mummy is one of my favorite movies. I love Rachel Weisz as the brainy, beautiful leading lady, Brendan Fraser as the adventurous man of action, and Arnold Vosloo as the chief villain. Also, they did get the mummification practices correct when Evelyn described how ancient Egyptians removed people's brains (minus a slight omission): The embalmers used the hook to also punch a hole in the person's skull so the brain drained out when they were rolled over. And I always get jumpscared when Jonathan is toying around in that damned sarcophagus, no matter how many times I've seen the movie. Side trivia: 1. In the scene introducing her as Ankh-su-namun, model/actress Patricia Velásquez was completely naked with the exception of a loin cloth, a few pieces of jewelry, pasties & body paint (body paint took four hours to apply). 2. Brendan Fraser revealed on a recent episode of “The Kelly Clarkson Show” that he had a near-death experience during a stunt gone wrong while filming “The Mummy.” The Oscar winner said he was “choked out accidentally” during the scene in which he had to be hanged from the gallows in the Egyptian prison, which resulted in him being resuscitated by on-set medical personnel. 3. In the desert race to Hamunaptra, you see camels and horses. Horses are faster (on flat land), but camels are adapted to life in the desert. Even though they do eventually have to eat and drink, camels can live off the fat reserves inside their humps, their long eyelashes keep dust out of their eyes, and their feet are big and wide to keep them from sinking into the sand as they move. 4. After Evelyn unknowingly awakens Imhotep by reading The Book Of The Dead (which is actually a funerary scroll in real life) and the locust swarm flies into the encampment at Hamunaptra, the locusts crawling on the Egyptologist are actually grasshoppers that were refrigerated to make them sluggish. On a similar note, the scarabs in real life were merely dung beetles, not vicious flesh eaters.

There is a video on KZbin of an Egyptologist reacting to this movie, and one of the more remarkable things is a LOT of the Heiroglyphs and Heiratic on the the various objects is in fact accurately translated. Like the writing scratched into the top of the sarcophagus that Imhotep was buried alive in does in fact read "Death is only the beginning", more or less.

Brendan Fraser first came on the scene in Encino Man (1992) with Sean Astin (LOTR’s Samwise Gamgee) and Paul Shore, and then with School Ties (1992) with Matt Damon. Ben Affleck, and Chris O’Donnell. He rose to stardom with George of the Jungle (1997) and Gods and Monsters (1998) with Ian McKellen before doing The Mummy. He’s had a tumultuous career after that but made a comeback in The Whale (2022), which won him Academy Award for Best Actor for the role of Charlie. It’s a powerful but depressing film. John Hannah is probably best known (aside from The Mummy franchise ) for Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994) and for the TV series, Spartacus: Blood and Sand, and Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, where he plays the Roman, Quintus Lentulus Batiatus, owner of a gladiator school, along side his wife, Lucretia, played by Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess). The lovely Rachel Weiss was probably first noticed in Stealing Beauty (1996) with Liv Tyler (LOTR’s Arwen Undómiel), Joseph Fiennes, and Jeremy Irons. She went on to star in Swept from the Sea (1997) alongside Ian McKellen before playing Evelyn Carnahan in The Mummy. She would go on to star in Beautiful Creatures (2000), Enemy at the Gates (2001)with Joseph Fiennes and Jude Law, and, About a Boy (2002) with Hugh Grant. She went on to star in the MCU’s Black Widow (2021) with Scarlett Johansen and Florence Pugh.

The Mummy Returns is also pretty good. The only reason it gets a bad rep is because of what they did with The Rock (his wrestling schedule kept him from doing mocap so the animators improvised). Tomb of the Dragon Emperor was a bit of a disappointment but has great fight scenes with Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh. The Scorpion King spin-off is what it is. Director Stephen Sommers also did Van Helsing with Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale, which is in a similar style as The Mummy but with Dracula.

I love this movie, but every time I watch it, I seriously question the judgment of the ancient Egyptians in this story. Their plan to punish Imhotep was to give him immortality with the power to control the sand and summon the plagues of Egypt? Not to mention, they've cursed their descendants to forever guard him because of how horrific his return would be. I mean, wouldn't a public flogging and execution have been far less trouble, lol.

The curse was twofold. First, it made him immortal so he couldn't be reunited with Anck-su-namon in the afterlife. Stef, that kind of experience is common for creative types TBH. I was the same way, good (but not great) in almost every subject. I remember I had a professor who said. "English is the study of everything," because when dealing with literature and storytelling you study everything. Look at Tolkien. He had to employ linguistics, mythology, medieval warfare, anthropology, etc. to create just LotR. Science is used in sci-fi, and psychology for character realism. I dabble in game design now, fusing all that storytelling and worldbuilding with gameplay and level design and such. You can go really deep into tactics, strategy, game theory, etc. It all depends on your interests and what topics are needed for the project.

I recall reading that the Spanish actor who played ihmotep, really can open his mouth like that. It wasn't cgi or practical effects.

A lot of broomhandle mauser pistols were in this film. I guess with more than a million of the sidearms produced in 40 years of production from Mauser, and many more unlicensed copies made in other countries, it’s not really that surprising. I AM pleased that they included a period accurate Lewis Gun mounted in the rear cockpit of the biplane that Ardeth then takes dismounted to battle with the mummies. Jonathan throwing the empty revolver instead of reloading is something that annoys me INTENSELY. Firearms, then as now, are valuable possessions, and throwing them away after expending the ammunition inside is unthinkable TO ME. Bernard Fox (Winston Havelock, pilot of the biplane) played Colonel Archibald Gracie in the film Titanic, Gracie actually survived the sinking IRL. In the film, he made the somewhat rude comment “women and machinery DO NOT mix….” after hearing Rose’s partially truthful explanation of how Jack came to be laying on top of her when the sailors came running over I find it amusing that Benny had the nerve to insult Rick’s camel while riding his own. Camels and Horses are basically on par speed wise, 40 mph at a burst, 25 mph sustained for an hour In 1925, blue gold isn’t really a thing. Nowadays, alloying gold with gallium or iridium can produce a gold alloy with a blue tinge. In my professional opinion, it looks….ODD. I wouldn’t choose to work with it. Booby trapped tombs are nearly completely a hollywood fiction. The closest thing to a REAL LIFE example is the Bahariya Oasis tomb, where the floor was covered in 8 inches of Hematite dust, which can cause very unpleasant and fatal internal injuries if it is inhaled by a human. The scarab, Scarabaeus sacer, IS a real insect but it does not behave anything like the one portrayed in the film. They do NOT feed on living flesh nor do they attack anything in swarms. That was Hollywood bullshit, through and through. The Medjai were a real organization in ancient Egypt. It is thought that they disappeared around 1100 BCE. The Medjai's tattoos are given to them when they turn sixteen, to officially denote their role as defenders against evil. The ceremony is also a trial, since if the Medjai show any kind of pain or discomfort, it's considered that they brought shame upon their family. Men within the group will get tattoos over their entire body, shown with Ardeth's face tattoos that spell out the words "underworld" and "truth" in Egyptian hieroglyphics Ardeth Bay, the leader of the Medjai, (played by Oded Fehr) is shown speaking Arabic. I’m not sure whether this is accurate, I believe a tribe as isolated and focused on maintaining it’s long held traditions would be speaking Coptic, the closest language to ancient egyptian that exists. Historicity: The filmmakers played it fast and loose with real history on this one: Seti the first died in 1279, so Imhotep murdering him in 1290? Pretty much impossible. The idea that an egyptian curse would directly invoke the plagues described in the book of Exodus in the Christian bible is rather problematic, since scholarship cannot agree on when the exodus (if it ever truly happened) took place, and what pharaoh would have been the antagonist is highly debated. The mostly commonly accepted idea is that Ramsees the second IS the pharaoh of the exodus. The problem with this, in terms of this film, is that Seti was Ramsees II’s FATHER and thus the curse would have been concocted BEFORE said plagues ever transpired. One thing that jumps out at me about the scenario of resurrecting Anck-su-namun (Her Life Is of Amun) is that when Imhotep tries the first time to resurrect her, there is NO woman beside the body to act as the sacrifice. Near the end of the film, Evelyn is chosen to BE that sacrifice, so why the disparity?? If you are wondering, Anck-su-namun was a princess, daughter of Pharaoh Ankhenaten and Queen Nefertiti, and would go on to marry Tutankhamun, which would also put HER presence outside the timeline given in the film, having been born in 1348 and died in 1322, some 32 years before the events portrayed in the film that got Imhotep sealed away as a juicy mummy.

When we saw this in the theater, right as Brendan Fraser uses 2 handguns, I knew it immediately that The Mummy is going to be a franchise.

Your questioning of the cat and the fear it instilled in the mummy, is because of how ancient Egyptians saw cats and how they were perceived as guardians in the afterlife. This is why the mummy left in haste out of her room.
