The Celtics honestly are the most overrated franchise ever. Most of their rings were in the era with only a few teams, where you had an all star team on Boston playing against a bunch of unathletic white dudes, to be blunt. In the modern Era, Boston has 4 rings. 4. 4 rings. The lakers in the modern era have 10. Nuff said. Even if you count the 70's Boston only has 6 and LA has 11. If they hadnt got Pitino, they could have won quite a few more with Pierce on their team.

Better than me in Madden 08 trying to improve my running game, but passing on free agent Shawn Alexander in favor of the third best rookie running back, who proceeds to suck, quickly get benched for the old guy, and only score a single (admittedly really cool 70-yard) TD on the ground all year before randomly running an onside kick back for a TD in garbage time of a blowout Super Bowl win. So basically like the Percy Harvin situation on the Seahawks, but way dumber.

Don't compare this to Gruden. Gruden is doing a great job acquiring draft picks and he honestly can create a dynasty in Oakland if he trades away Carr and nails just half of his picks (one being on a QB of course). What he's doing is no different than what Sam Hinkie did with the 76ers, which people criticized heavily at the time but as soon as Hinkie was fired everyone was prasing him and calling him a genius. While Gruden, like Hinkie, probably won't be around when the Raiders become good, he will be getting praise for how great of a job he did. Ya Gruden is getting bashed a ton for his big contract and the raiders 2018 results, but he knew this team wasn't talented enough to beat the chiefs or even the chargers. The blow up clearly has the blessing of ownership. I'd give it 2020 before we really declare him a fail. The big difference for the Celtics was that Pitino was pure awful and a total spaz of a decision maker. It probably never works out that the Celtics land Pierce if they drafted McGrady, but imagine that the Celtics would've had an outside shot of starting Billups, McGrady and Pierce. Antoine Walker probably would've found more success as a secondary option as well, versus the version Boston got (an inefficient volume scorer). Danny Ainge came in and fixed things, but Pitino definitely managed to cement a lost decade for the team despite having an all time great around in Paul Pierce.

I can't even imagine what it would've been like had the Celtics hired Bird to coach, drafted Kobe/Jermaine O' Neal/Stojakovic in 96 instead of Walker (all 3 were drafted below him), drafted TMac with that 6th pick, and kept Billups and Rick Fox instead of trading them for nothing. If they still sucked enough to end up with the 10th pick in 98 & draft Pierce, that would be an amazing team that would've been a contender (maybe not win rings but definitely make deep playoffs runs every year). That starting 5 would be: Chauncey, TMac, Fox, Pierce, and O'Neal! I can't be mad cuz even though the Cs did Chauncey dirty, he convinced KG to leave Minny & sign with them in 2007!

I don't think college success in any role will necessarily translate to NBA success in the same role, and Pitino's complete failure to adapt to his circumstances and to make hasty, stubborn decisions only exacerbated that. Rash decisions with motives that don't fit your situation is a problem throughout all of history, really, especially the removal of Jungleland Express, formerly at Six Flags Great Adventure.
@theOnyFUFU6 жыл бұрын
I think the Celts hired him because he had proven NBA experience with the Knicks as the video mentioned. The President/Coach has never worked in NBA history (look at Doc Rivers in LA, or Thibs with MN), especially for a coach going from the NCAA to the NBA. If they learned anything from the Red Auerbach era, they should've hired a Celtics legend (in this case Bird). Auerbach always brought back former players to coach or run the organization. Most of them did great and were fiercely loyal to the organization (KC Jones was a player in the 60s then coached the Bird era teams & Ainge is arguably the best GM in the league).

Living in New England, I started following the Celtics around 94, right as Bird and McHale retired, Reggie Lewis died and things got awful in Boston. With limited National NBA games, local Celtics coverage was my league pass back then. I remember losing the 97 draft lottery, when we could've potentially gotten Duncan and McGrady... Chris Wallace was one of the worst GMs in history, as Boston made awful personnel moves for years, always trying to acquire "the next Larry Bird" (aka: White Players). The players they passed on compared to the players they got was comically disparate. Eric Montross, Dino Radja, Raef LaFrentz, Jiri Welch, Tom Gugliotta and Wally Szerbiack (both way past their prime), Chris Mihm, Travis Knight, Vitaly Potopenko... Meanwhile they passed on Kobe, drafted and gave up on Chauncey Billups and Joe Johnson... The one good move they made was drafting Paul Pierce, and that was dumb luck that he fell to the 10th pick. Otherwise they wanted Dirk Nowitski, obviously 😂.

I dispute this one a little bit. First, the Celtics were bad when Patino arrived. Second, look at the players Patino drafted. Chauncey Billups and Paul Pierce are hall-of-famers, and Antoine Walker is a borderline one. The only things you could make the case for is that maybe the NBA game had passed the gut by and that you never have someone be both coach and president, but I cannot say he's the worst of all time.
@kvltizt5 жыл бұрын
Antoine Walker is not borderline HoF. He's a fat bum who had a few good tears and mostly bad years.
@jacobrklein71755 жыл бұрын
Wrong. When you look at the stats, Walker was one of two guys producing during the lean years of the Celtics, the other being Paul Pierce. And getting into the HOF in basketball is a lot easier than, say the NFL version in Canton, OH, because the basketball HOF can also include your college career, and Walker had a good college career and won a national title. I will say, though, they should have drafted T-Mac.
