Playing those harder courses lowered your handicap. A few years ago I was a member of a course that had a 76 course rating and a slope rating of 151. My average score was 74 and I was a plus 4. Now I'm playing at a course with 71 course rating and 121 slope. I'm now a 2 with the an average score of 75.

Yes, great analysis, I was at a high of +2.8 hcp at a 133 slope rated course, yet felt more like a scratch as I shot around par 71 and a few 68, 69 and some shockers. On the easier course at our club with slope rating 121 I would still shoot around par... weird system especially under USGA guidelines
@MJSchaefer16
@MJSchaefer16 3 жыл бұрын
Daniel but it's accurate, it's not false. If you were shooting 2 under the course rating on a slope 151 super hard course, and now you're sitting 4 over the course rating on a much easier 121 slope, I'd say you were a much better golfer before and your handicap reflects that. Think of it this way, if you didn't have slope/course rating, then a 75 shooter at an easy course and 75 shooter at a much harder course would show the same handicap, which is obviously not right.

I have been playing golf in Sweden for over 20 years and they have always during that time factored handicaps like that. My mate however, (who is also an Englishman like me), he always says if you are 13 handicap you should have 13 shots and that's it, irrespective of the course you are playing and how difficult it is. Obviously that is not how it works and if you check the slope table for the colour of tee etc, that 13 handicapper might have 18 shots on that particular course if it is a more difficult course. I think it is a much better system 👍

It's always positive with a positive reference to a positive 'plan' for the months, years ahead. The thing you’re not mentioning there though. Is that when you’ve entered 20 rounds in, the higher scores will start counting and your best 8. The “your handicap is you on a good day” isn’t quite right. This new WHS handicap is a reflection of your current form and not you on a good day (which is what the old system was really). So after you have 20 rounds in, and you have a bad patch and get a few +5 over rounds in, that average will jump up from +1 to - something.

It scales up to that once you get 20 rounds in. He's not really a +1.4.... for whatever reason he's chosen to only do his last 10 rounds instead of his last 20 rounds. Guarantee he's looking at around a 2 hdcp if you take his best 8 out of his last 20, which is still great!
@MJSchaefer16
@MJSchaefer16 3 жыл бұрын
It is 8/20. But he only started posting scores when this series started so at this point he only has 10. Still 3/10 is your top 30% scores, but 8/20 will be your top 40% so if his next 10 are similar to his first 10, it will be slightly worse but not much. Probably still scratch or better. Unless his next 10 are significantly worse.

I’m getting back into the game after a 5-6 year sabbatical. Hdcp was 12 when I stopped playing and my average round 85-86. Now after my 6th round my handicap is 12.8 and I haven’t broke 90 yet. I’m glad you posted this video as I currently suck compared to 2015.

It will go up when you have best 8 from 20 just courtesy of the fact there's more rounds so the average will get pushed up.
@shorey66
@shorey66 3 жыл бұрын
Not if he keeps playing this well on the tough courses in poor conditions. That's the point of the new system. His worst one of the ten would only have been five over due to conditions
@gaviscon999
@gaviscon999 3 жыл бұрын
@@shorey66 you're not understanding the new system then... Those poor rounds in the 80s didn't count in the 8 because it's only his best 3. when he gets up to 20 he'll have to count 8. So it will be higher... I shot 71 the other week .. am I a 1 handicap? No... I'm 3.0. For example my best 3 are +1, +3 and +3.... If it were just those scores I would be lower than 3.0 It's just simple maths. If he carries on and puts 8 in at that rate he'd be +3/4 but he won't because those low 80s will start to count.
@MJSchaefer16
@MJSchaefer16 3 жыл бұрын
@@gaviscon999 no I think he understands it fine it will go up but not much if his next 10 are similar to his first 10. 3/10 is the top 30% of your scores, but 8/20 is still only the top 40%, so yeah slightly worse but not by much. If he plays his next 10 similar to his first 10 (some really good under par w/ course and slope factored in, some a little over, and same bad quite a bit over), it won't change that much.
@MJSchaefer16
@MJSchaefer16 3 жыл бұрын
@@gaviscon999 those 80s scores will likelynever count, because you're only taking 8 out of 20, unless you think Rick will shoot in the 80s 13 or more times out of 20.

Congratulations. As a Brit who has played 23 years of golf in California under the WHS system, I’m not surprised. Before career and family interrupted things, I got down to 7.1 while regularly shooting mid 80s - I just had three rounds of 76 on tough courses in one year and every mid 80s round only added 0.1 to my handicap. Working my way back from 12.8 now after 10+ years without an official handicap due to not playing much. Rick was always playing the tips so 77 is a much better score than someone shooting 77 from one or two tee boxes further up. Even mini tour players would probably be +5 or better.

Got my first handicap this year so still learning about it. So I assume a +1.2 is different than a 1.2? Example: If some shoots Par 72 a +1.2 would score 70.8? And a 1.2 would score a 73.2? Thanks for any clarification.
@LaurenceWhiting
@LaurenceWhiting 3 жыл бұрын
I also struggle with understanding it all but I think the +1.2 means it literally gets added to his score. so 72 would become 73.2. It's calculating that he shoots under par by 1.2 so it gets added on to even his score to par.

Being Australian our great hero was Greg Norman, it was suggested that he could have been plus 11 if he was a club player. We should also take into consideration he played much of his time with a lump of wood on the end of a steel pipe ( maybe a little harsh for the equipment of that era). Most important is the change in the golf ball from then to now.

Quite right too. Rick never shirks the hardest possible challenges and is - not that my opinion is worth half a pint of spit, of course - a great golfer and coach. One thing he's taught me over the years in these videos is to take everything on the chin and keep going no matter what. I'd have probably given up by now if it wasn't for that mindset, and it makes the odd super shot sweet indeed. Fantastic stuff.
