On the easier course at our club with slope rating 121 I would still shoot around par... weird system especially under USGA guidelines
@MJSchaefer163 жыл бұрын
Daniel but it's accurate, it's not false. If you were shooting 2 under the course rating on a slope 151 super hard course, and now you're sitting 4 over the course rating on a much easier 121 slope, I'd say you were a much better golfer before and your handicap reflects that. Think of it this way, if you didn't have slope/course rating, then a 75 shooter at an easy course and 75 shooter at a much harder course would show the same handicap, which is obviously not right.

I have been playing golf in Sweden for over 20 years and they have always during that time factored handicaps like that. My mate however, (who is also an Englishman like me), he always says if you are 13 handicap you should have 13 shots and that's it, irrespective of the course you are playing and how difficult it is. Obviously that is not how it works and if you check the slope table for the colour of tee etc, that 13 handicapper might have 18 shots on that particular course if it is a more difficult course. I think it is a much better system 👍

The thing you’re not mentioning there though. Is that when you’ve entered 20 rounds in, the higher scores will start counting and your best 8. The “your handicap is you on a good day” isn’t quite right. This new WHS handicap is a reflection of your current form and not you on a good day (which is what the old system was really). So after you have 20 rounds in, and you have a bad patch and get a few +5 over rounds in, that average will jump up from +1 to - something.

Working my way back from 12.8 now after 10+ years without an official handicap due to not playing much. Rick was always playing the tips so 77 is a much better score than someone shooting 77 from one or two tee boxes further up. Even mini tour players would probably be +5 or better.

Got my first handicap this year so still learning about it. So I assume a +1.2 is different than a 1.2? Example: If some shoots Par 72 a +1.2 would score 70.8? And a 1.2 would score a 73.2? Thanks for any clarification.

I also struggle with understanding it all but I think the +1.2 means it literally gets added to his score. so 72 would become 73.2. It's calculating that he shoots under par by 1.2 so it gets added on to even his score to par.

G'day Rick, fantastic to see you are stoked to be a + handicapper. Hope this makes you want to play more rounds. Keep up the great content mate. Cheers. ⛳
Congrats on the 1.2HCP That’s impressive, sir. Hard work, practice and dedication pays off. Looking forward to next week’s break 75.

Really interesting stuff particularly around handicaps representing a person on a good day.

Hi Rick, excellent video. Brings a perspective to the game that we ametuers never grasp.
Not surprised at all. Your swing is incredible, and when you’re on it you are ACCURATE!

I like how you phrased handicap, I don't feel quite as bad about my 20 as I do now. I know I shouldn't feel bad about that since I've only been playing a year, but I feel better about it thinking of it in that light
Being Australian our great hero was Greg Norman, it was suggested that he could have been plus 11 if he was a club player. We should also take into consideration he played much of his time with a lump of wood on the end of a steel pipe ( maybe a little harsh for the equipment of that era). Most important is the change in the golf ball from then to now.

I got my first handicap in almost 20 years this week, 15.6, I was pleasantly surprised. Got a way to go to get to single figures though 😉

Wild stuff. Just shows how good those on tour are.

Totally correct. On my best day I can shoot about 80 and I'm now off 11 where it was originally bout 15.

Quite right too. Rick never shirks the hardest possible challenges and is - not that my opinion is worth half a pint of spit, of course - a great golfer and coach. One thing he's taught me over the years in these videos is to take everything on the chin and keep going no matter what. I'd have probably given up by now if it wasn't for that mindset, and it makes the odd super shot sweet indeed. Fantastic stuff.

Awesome job Rick! Anyone know a good video that explain the Handicap. I’ve never done mine before and it’s a little confusing to me.
