Here is the thing I don't understand. When testing clubs you go straight at the pin. You do very well. On the course, you always seem to be trying to hit a high draw, low fade, big slinger, very rarely straight at the pin. Question 1. Would the test be better for you if you tried many shot shapes? Question 2. Could you play a few rounds where you take your prevailing shot shape and go at the pins? I am not good at golf. I imagine it would be very fun to shape shots at will but keeping it simple when possible could result in lower scores.
@PetSKi6720 сағат бұрын
Then again, for most peopöls the clubs make next to no difference.
@DekauweGoesMoo20 сағат бұрын
This is largely because of the hole shape, lie , slope/ball above below feet, wind, and many other factors when playing on a course. I used to think this from the outside too first watching Rick and other pros like how are they so pin straight in a sim and then get to the course and end up with an 85? 😅 courses make good players have to hit a variety of shots that are rarely straight and on flat ground with no wind
@AlabamaGolfer20 сағат бұрын
It’s one thing to hit a ball on a simulator where the green is flat and the pin is in the middle, and something different when you’re on a real course with an undulating green, a back left pin with trouble left. On the first one, you could hit any shape you wanted and it’ll work out, but on the second, a draw would be the percentage play (provided you don’t overcook it). Even if it doesn’t draw, you’re still probably in good shape. But for us mere mortals who don’t always control the side spin well, a straight shot to the middle of the green probably isn’t a bad idea 😂
@Chris5432120 сағат бұрын
@DekauweGoesMoo I agree. That's why I said keep it simple when possible. For example, par 3s begin with a perfect lie.
@codyc1820 сағат бұрын
Rick has always tried to hit shots he has no business playing on the course. Just because a hole looks like it favors a certain shot doesn’t mean you should be trying it. Morikawa said in a recent interview he hits one shot 95% of the time. Rick would improve dramatically if he would find a shot and stick to it.

Rick, great review and I agree with every word… however I think you’re giving more credit to the big manufacturers than they deserve. If you look at the Taylor Made irons, they are almost identical to the old Mizuno T-zoid to give one example. This is true of most irons these days. It’s just a newer version of an old design in my opinion. The big manufacturers just have much higher overhead costs to cover than a company like Takomo.
@PetSKi6720 сағат бұрын
Since the 20th centuri basically every headshape of forged irons has been discovered. A lump of 1025 or S20C is basically not any different from another clubhead looking the same or similar. It is jus a preference, if you wanna pay twice the price or get the same performance for half the price. I have played Mizuno blades for 15 odd years, or so. But wanted something different for my 50th and could afford them only at 54 years of age. Now playing a limited edition of Miura irons PW-3 but could as well be playing my old Mizuno MP-69’s. No difference, except the Miuras are designed by Katsuhiro and The Golden Bear himself. The off-center hits with my Miura set are worse than with the Mizunos, and the feel is softer on Mizunos due the Grain Flow forging compared to Miura’s triple strike. Mizzies are around 15-hundred custom and after shaft change and all the dues, taxes and customs covered, to my liking the Miuras now at 35. But I love them.

Just this year we've had Cobra & a few others come out with 3D printed irons and Callaway with the Apex Titanium faced hollow-body two-piece irons. Those are both new developments that show improvements over existing irons, but they do command a hefty price premium. Love this review. I'm a big TM fan and love my clubs but can't help but feel that all the premium manufacturers are taking us mere mortals for a bit of a ride when it comes to the pricing of anything golf related. So much of our hard earned money is going into paying all of these already top earning tour players. Brands like Takomo are showing that being much more affordable does not have to come at the cost of quality and performance. When I next look at upgrading my clubs, I'll certainly be looking at manufacturers like Takomo and encouraging all my mates to do the same. Well done Rick for providing a great unbiased review as always and Takomo for producing great equipment for more reasonable prices.

I’m using the P7CBs in my shorter irons (770s in the longer irons). I’m a big fan. I tried out a few different shafts during my fitting to get the right peak height I was looking for. That’s the only knock I have on the DTC brands, the lack of fitting process. But I get that spending $1400+ for a set of irons is a tough hill to climb for many when you can get something pretty close for half the price.

I just got them as well. For the reason you stated, I decided to get the heads only, then had my local fitter set me up with shafts. Interestingly, he used the TM P770 to simulate the 101T during the fitting. At sixty years old I don’t have the swing speed I used to, so he put me in Project X 5.5’s. Obviously this method almost offset the lower price point (not quite), but I absolutely love them.

The one thing with Takomo was that I couldn’t find anywhere or anyone to try one beforehand. I’ve been looking for a 2iron driving iron for a fair while now and I saw that the takomo 101U was in stock in the 2iron. I thought @$119 vs the Taylormade UDI for $249 it was half the price. So ordered it and it arrived 6 days later. Great club and basically everything I expected. Goes about the same as the 16 degree hybrid I want it to replace. I will say the hybrid is slightly easier to hit off the fairway as I normally catch the 2iron a bit thin sometimes. Really good value club and have a had a fair few people offer to buy it off me for a bit more than what I paid for it
@Hunter-zp5hd20 сағат бұрын
These are both a solid forged head in a CB type configuration. There’s not a whole lot that you can do as a manufacturer to “improve” this type of iron. The only thing I can think of is the actual forging process which might improve the feel from one to another. It’s the same with blades. So as long as you like the look of either one, they feel the same, and perform the same, why spend double the price? I just wish I would’ve paid attention to the Takomo site and bought the bronze ones. Those irons are beautiful. I hope they come out with those again. The better DTC brands are quality. Look at what Toura Golf is doing if you want to test some fantastic Japanese forgings at a reasonable price.

I agree with Rick on this one, based on looks, which are objective, price which is hard to avoid, based on the huge saving, then performance with both delivering similar numbers. The Tacomo's have to take it overall. When the facts are looked at, there have been thousands of club design's over the many decades, so copying will happen, somewhere along the line. The biggest jump in overall improvements over the years IMHO has come from shafts, likely being the biggest contributor to increases in length and accuracy, as good fittings have proven all around the World. R&D with any new brand is expensive, if you build from the ground up, but manufacturers of iron heads, have all the designs ready and waiting, just needing the name adding to the mould, or engraved into the metal after being cast. So R&D today, may not be, what it was generations ago, they just bring A & B together and give it a name. Advertising, promo events, tour pro's, now KZbin influencers testing, all aid in selling the products, using whichever method, proves the most efficient and effective for increasing sales.

Why you ditch the Wilson's?
@blahblahblah74216 сағат бұрын
Im presuming your TM clubs have fitted shafts, your choice of grip & lie angle etc & the Takomo's are stock? If this is so that makes them even more amazing!

this is a great review. Only thing I'd say is Takomo only offer KBS shafts and I see you were playing a DG so maybe they made this for you specially.

Golf club price is massively inflated. R and D on one piece irons isn’t as extensive as they would have you believe.

It’s marketing mate…. Only reason they are soo expensive to pay for all the marketing and top tour players

My main concern is can you get fitted for the right shaft with Tacomo? When I got fitted for my P790 I tested 3 different shafts. The third one I tested (the most stiff) was the best for me. Without testing I don't know if I get the right shaft for me with the Tacomo's

Rick would you consider using Takomo or even do an on course 18 holes and see what you shoot ?
@JohnClarke120 сағат бұрын
@HITGolfReviews, Rick -- this is very helpful, but I think it would add a lot if you would spend a little time discussing the shafts on each club, since shafts have such an influence on performance. Even if it's just to show what the stock shaft is, any differences between the two. Otherwise we don't really have all the relevant information to draw a conclusion.

Need to see a full round with the Takomos, see how you go

So they go the same distance and spin the same but what about dispersion? Side to side and front to back? Those numbers are much more important. Is the Taylormade more consistent or not?

Can't compare the 301s but my 101s are beautiful things. I really cannot argue with what they offer.

That's a no-brainer. If someone wants to pay TWICE the price for the TMades does it because he is hit by the marketing of the big brands. Or because they want to show their clubs to their crowd of friends. As for me I, if they perform equally, I would not care about the brand but the looks are important. In this case Takomo wins it all for me.

I absolutely think performance wise Takomo are great irons. Personally, just waiting on a better look as I don't love the looks. But I don't have a great argument for why I would pay twice the price for Taylormade

Looks? Mate I couldn’t give a FF on looks! If I like the results they’re in the list.

Rick what shaft is in these irons looks like your swing speed is little over 100mph do you play a stiff shaft or extra stiff. I'm looking at buying a set of 301CBs, currently playing a Srixion ZX5 at a 5 handicap

Rick does this type of review minimize the need for ‘fitting’ talked so much about for the major brands, but not available from direct to consumer brands?
@rolirolster18 сағат бұрын
Hopefully they stay on this road and don't start sponsoring big players, because then their prices will soon match Taylormade. I paid 850 for my Taylormade M2s in 2018, 5 to PW, so 650 is a spot on price. Next time I'm in the market I'll definitely check them out.

That’s 6-12 more rounds of golf you can play with the savings on the Takomo irons or a few extra lessons, so unless you’re already playing the most possible rounds a year you could squeeze in, easy win for Takomo.
@chezchezchezchez15 сағат бұрын
The problem is the Maltys are so darn good that it’s hard to go to Takomos. Same price. More choices, more shaft choices, grips, etc. - they build it to your specs.

I fancied going back to traditional lofts so I bought a set of takomo 301 cb’s. They’re not for me, not now I’m the wrong side of 50 years old. 😂 dropped a clanger there.

You'd be mad to go for the Taylormades. Seriously thinking about going for some takomo's soon...

So I have a set of 201s and 101Ts. Some of the best value clubs ive ever had. But the question regardin about development/research/copying... Theres not much data on the manufacturing/design process of takomos along with most DTC brands. Im fairly sure there isnt a whole lot of "reserach and design" coming out from Takomo inhouse. Its more likely a producer from China gives gives mass produced blanks to takomo to "slightly" tweak and add their own branding. However, the baseline is that the manufacture must use good materials and have strict manufacturing tolerences.

The other factor is shaft options. Would seriously consider the Takomo’s but I need graphite shafts.

My Missus just said, why doesn't he cover the names up and do a blind test? .....then "voila" you mention it. Great test Rick.....ps...I use Wilson d7's and I dont think theres a premium brand that would better them for my level (16 hcp)

I have played the new p770 2024 irons for 4 months now and previously played the 2023 p790 and I have a friend who plays the 101 irons and he’s hit mine and I have hit his and they are not even close as far as quality. His look 10 years old after one season mine still look brand new! Even my p790 irons have over 100 rounds on them and still look amazing. I agree the 101 feel great but at the end of the day like anything in life you get what you pay for. They use cheaper materials to make the irons therefor after a lot of use it shows on them as a pose to expensive TAYLORMADE irons made with quality materials will not show the wear as much and also feel a lot better as well. You will always get what you pay for in life. Not taking anything away for the 101 irons but they are not the same quality as TAYLORMADE.

I think/believe - the Takomo is worth their weight!!! Price-point is only another benefit! If one were to get fitted --- oh my!; I'd find it hard to find anything what-so-ever even close to the benefit or value! But that's me! Be Safe
