Moe could get pretty "nasty" in those films, and I don't mean just when he would hit the other two Stooges, but also when he used to call them insulting names like "feather-brained imbeciles," "knuckleheads," "chowderheads," "lunkheads," etc, etc. All the fights they would get into, either among themselves or with others, were rather nasty too. As for their shorts being a show "the kids could watch," it should be remembered that a lot of parents objected to these movies because they were "too violent," because they feared that they might encourage their children to imitate the way Moe would whack the other Stooges on the head, or twist their noses or ears around, or poke them in the eyes, and so on. In reality, there's very little evidence of any child aping the behavior of this famous comedy team.

Do you think there was some kind of survey done of pediatricians and emergency room physicians in which "childhood injuries that came about due to kids reenacting Stooges routines" were tallied? Fact is, there is simply no way to verify the truth of your last statement one way or the other. However, if you like, I'll give you one bit of anecdotal evidence. When I was approximately 9 years old, my best friend had to have his nose cauterized to stop the bleeding I inflicted when I got a little carried away with the Three Stooges routine we were reenacting. I love the Stooges, but the reaction of parents you seem to want to pooh-pooh wasn't exactly based on nothing.

Most people that saw these shorts (first run) are gone as well. The first short was 90 years ago. (and you'd have to be old enough to remember watching them, add 10 years?) I got my Stooge addiction in the 70's, from Sunday mornings, WSBK TV 38, Boston. Good times.

When I lived in Yonkers, NY, our cable TV system picked up a few out-of-state stations, including WSBK, which was referred to as Boston's "superstation," in other words, the equivalent of Ted Turner's TBS. I remember watching the 3 Stooges on WSBK, just as you used to do.

he was underrated than the others, he didn't try to be like curly he tried to be himself, come up with his own acts and expressions, so yeah was good when it came to be part of his own character, it's just too bad joe besser couldn't do any better, but at the same time he was just a quick replacement, even though they also had joe palma as fake shemp for 4 shorts before they brought besser, but still curly in my opinion is always the star for all fans to enjoy, each stooge had there own characters.

I'm quite aware of how the Stooges reused old footage. This is probably because Harry Cohn, the head of Columbia Pictures, which made the Stooges' films, was known to be a bit of a tightwad who would look for any way of cutting back on the studio's budget. He figured that it was cheaper to reuse old stock footage (especially when Moe, Larry, and Shemp would remake some of their older shorts with Shemp using Curly's lines) than to film new footage. As a matter of fact, the last four films featuring Shemp as the "third stooge" (including the one discussed here, which was the very LAST one) were made around the time or shortly after he had passed away (one or two of them were released in 1956, the year after he died). How, you may ask? Well, the studio, with Moe and Larry's help, simply reworked some of their earlier Shemp shorts by using or combining stock footage from the older films, and then adding in new footage that would either show Moe and Larry alone or where they would use a stand-in for Shemp. This was done with their 1956 short called "Commotion On The Ocean," which made liberal use of scenes from two films from the late 1940s, "Crime On Their Hands"and "Dunked In The Deep." "For Crimin' Out Loud," the film talked about here, was also a reworking of an older short. I forget which one, though.

It wss called "Who Done It?" It was filmed in 1949. "For Crimin' Out Loud" was one of several 1950s Stooges' shorts recycled from earlier shorts featuring actors who were deceased including Duke York, Simona Boniface, Ted Lorch, and, of course, Shemp and Curly (Booty and the Beast).

It's crazy that they had so much older footage that they could actually use to fill in and keep enough continuity with the newer footage to create that short. I think it all matched up pretty nicely, considering the fact that I never knew they did that until watching your video right now. And Ive been watching the Three Stooges off and on for many years. I think that their shorts also offer a fascinating glimpse into the Los Angeles area of the past. Rick, this is a great video. I guess as the Stooges aged, they figured the younger versions had more energy and were more appealing as your pointed out in addition to being much cheaper to produce. Curly was a treasure...Larry was my favorite. After Curly, it took me awhile to get used to Shemp, I'll be honest here. But after a few shorts, he grew on me. When I watched his final short, I did notice some differences in the scenes, but...it worked!!! Thank you for the video!!!

Then after a few months, I saw films featuring Shemp and disliked him for the "unforgivable sin" of not being Curly. And what kind of a name was Shemp? As a teenager, I came to like Shemp, but he'll always be a close second to Curly.

Hey Rick, I saw the 3 Stooges perform live , onstage at the RKO Proktor's Theater in New Rochelle NY . It was 1962 when they released the film " The Three Stooges Meet Hercules ". Moe, Larry and Joe Derita were making personal appearances at movie theaters showing their new film. I remember Moe telling us kids from the stage NOT to poke anyone in the eyes. He showed how they poked eachother above the eyes. I recall them waving goodbye to us all outside from the windows of their tour bus which was one of those old buses with the round ends. It was not unusual for actors to appear live onstage at the old RKO Proktor's Theater. I have seen a newspaper Ad from 1951 that showed Bela Lugosi was appearing live onstage there to perform his " Big Horror and Magic Stage Show " . It was also used in the days of Vaudeville. Eddie Foy was known to appear there with all his kids. That was an easy show for him because Eddie Foy lived in New Rochelle with his big family. I remember as a kid seeing the old run down Foy home on Shore Road. It eventually was knocked own and the family donated the land to the City with the proviso that it be used a park for children.

Who Done It? was the last time Duke York (the goon) appeared in a Stooge short. He died by suicide January 24th, 1952 at the age of 43, six days after the tragic death of Curly Howard.

Good video - very illuminating. I note how Larry's hair was so much darker in the earlier segments that were recycled. Through all those years Moe retained his high energy & was able to deliver his lines flawlessly while the other Stooges declined just a bit. But their humor never aged one bit. Love my Stooges!

It's been a while since I saw this particular episode of the Stooges. Still classic comedy by them. I do like the use of the stock footage at times, as it gives them a different angle on the episode, where they can put in a little more acting. "Commotion on the Ocean" and "Dunked in the Deep" are good examples of the use of stock footage, as when the remake came about, Shemp had passed on, and Moe even eludes to "I wonder whatever became of that Shemp!" I think "Tricky Dicks" also used stock footage from "Hold that Lion", and they give us a little different angle on the episode.

Shemp was the original “ third stooge “ having broken in the vaudeville act in the 1920s with younger brother Moe and friend Ted Healy as the “ boss “ stooge…they added Larry after finding him performing in another act. By the early 1930s, they even had a movie under their belt, and after Shemp left the group around 1930 for a solo career,( he couldn’t stand Healy) he was replaced by Shemp and Moe’s kid brother Jerome ( Curly). When the boys parted ways with Healy in 1934, they signed with Columbia Pictures to make two- reelers ( 20 minute shorts) At this time, they were already in their mid to late 30s… When Curly’s health started to decline in the early 40 shorts,you can see his weight start to lessen, by 1945, they had to pad him up so he could look heavier than Moe. Notice as his health diminished,the creases in his face grew deeper, and his speech started slurring. More of the funny bits were given to Larry. After Curly became too I’ll to perform, older brother Sam ( Shemp) rejoined the boys. At this time he was 50. Years later when Columbia went on the cheap, the Stooges were pushing 60 and intercutting footage used up to 10 years earlier, yea, you can notice the difference…By the way, some of that pie fight footage goes back to earlier Curly shorts. Nice summary of the Three Stooges' history from their beginnings with Healy in the 1920s through the later Shemp years of the 1940s/1950s. Regarding the trio's ages when they came to Columbia in early 1934, Moe was 36, Larry was 31, and Curly was 30.

STOOGES 2 … Shemp died suddenly in 1955 and Curly had died a few years prior. The Stooges still had a couple of years left in their contact…Columbia pictures big shots were ready to drop them ( hardly any studios were showing shorts in front of the main feature anymore ) The boys rode out the last years with Joe Besser, a comic who at that time had a series of third rate comedies ,also with Columbia. The chemistry just wasn’t there, no matter, the studio disbanded the short subject division and their contracts were up and the Stooges were out of work for the first time since 1934. Television was all the craze by the late 50s. Studios were willing to dump their cartoons,serials,westerns,and shorts for a quick buck. Anyone with a TV can now enjoy the same comedies and cartoons that their parents enjoyed 25 years earlier. This actually revived the careers of stars of the past like Hopalong Cassidy and Buster Keaton. When Columbia Pictures sold these Stooge shorts packages to local TV stations…guess what happened? The boys were more popular than ever…but they were at retirement age…Now Columbia wanted them back! More to Come

I appreciate your in depth coverage of this subject. Especially the graph. I noticed recycled scenes in different episides but mostly thought they blended well, with some exceptions. Also there is an episode where both Shemp and Joe Besser played the same part. It’s mixed. With Joe playing it, you can see the lips of a woman mouthing “Shemp” but it is voiced over, “Joe” Don’t know the title but is a Christmas time setting and Larry is conniving to get the girlfriends away from Moe and Joe. Hope that makes sense. As TV was on the rise, the shorts department’s got smaller. Larry Fine said that as soon as Mr Cohen was out as head of Columbia, so were the Stooges.

@Cade Evans also Cade are you aware there were a few attemps to revive the Three Stooges in the 1970's but sadly Larry's paralizing stroke in the midst of filming a pilot for a new Three Stooges tv series never reached frution. Larry Finn died from a series of strokes in 1975. Unsuccessful attempts were made to revive the Three Stooges with long time supporting actor Emil Sitka in Finn's role in 1970 and 1975, but this attempt was cut short by Moe Howards death in 1975. Before Larry's death the Stooges were scheduled to co-star in Blazzing Stewardesses featuring Mo, Curly and Joe with Emil Sitka in the middle spot as Harry, Moes brother. The team was signed and public shots were taken, but one week prior to March's filming date, Moe was diagnosed with lung cancer and the Stooges had to back out; he died on May 4th, 1975. Producer Sam Sherman breifly considered having fromer Stooge Joe Besser take his place, but ultimately decided against it. As for the original repleacement Stooges Joe Besser died in 1988 of heart failure, followed by Joe DeRita of pneumonia in 1993, Emil Sitka was announced as a Stooge but never performed as such; he died on January 16, 1998 six months after being disabled by a stroke. 😢🪦🙏

I remember reading in one of many books about the Stooges that Shemp had a minor stroke (if you can call a stroke minor) at some point in the early 50s. Back then I doubt the stock footage would have stuck out to the casual Stooge fan but now that we can watch them at will, it is very obvious and you wonder how Columbia got away with it. The stock footage is often noticeable (take the pie fight footage from both "In the Sweet Pie and Pie and Half Wits Holiday for example) and it is clear a new short could probably have been cobbled together in a few hours. Shemp was looking haggard towards the end, don't forget he was 50 when he rejoined Moe and Larry and 60 when he passed and yet for most of his tenure he still had a lot of energy and wit. I always wondered if any interviews with him were made or exist.

At first I was confused by your chart, but as you explained it, various Stooges shorts with recycled footage came to mind. Prime example: "In the Sweet Pie and Pie". Not only does this short recycle the scene with the dance teacher from 1935's " Hoi Polloi ", but footage from this short was used in two later shorts.

True enough! Of all the Stooges, Curly was the youngest during the Columbia years, being only 30 at the start. But the "mileage" he put in his personal life off screen made him burn out just as he entered his 40s and left him dead before he could reach his 50s. So sad.

It's true that Curly replaced Shemp in Ted Healy's act. However, it's only Moe, Larry, and Curly parted with Healy and signed with Columbia that they officially became known as "The Three Stooges". That makes Curly the original third Stooge of the Three Stooges. Even in their first Columbia short, they were billed as Jerry Howard, Moe Howard, and Larry Fine.

About Shemp's passing...On November 23, 1955, Shemp went out with his friends to a boxing match at the Hollywood Legion Stadium. After the fights were over, Shemp hailed a taxicab to take him to his North Hollywood home with friend Al Winston. Shemp set back and lit up his cigar and told a joke when suddenly he slumped over into Winston’s lap. Shemp had a heart attack and was dead at the age of 60.

Oh my I watched these films decades ago when I was thirteen years old back in the late 1970s . My Mother did not exactly approve but back then there was very little to watch on television.

I've listened to the gentleman now describing the three stooges, how they did their films and everything they say shampowered to the box and match when he was sitting in the backseat he lit up a cigar. That's when he slumped over. That's when they think he had as heart attack. He couldn't even drive a car. I seen in one article he had a fear of driving. I like shrimp after curly Joe beza. I never cared for him. He he wasn't a good stooges as a third stooge ion more. I always liked them too. Curly to me was the funniest then ship thank you.

Columbia did this , so they could charge for a new release. Never realizing, the identical films could show up, close together on tv.

I read somewhere that although Shemp had a quick, massive heart attack, Moe suspected Shemp was getting slower in his mannerisms in his last 2 years. Moe hinted that Shemp may have had a small stroke his last year, but who knows? They were all slowing down. They were funny.

Shemp was 1/3 of the original trio. Babe took his place after Shemp took off to Hollyweird, staring in Columbia pictures. He came back in January of '45 after Babe's stroke.

I never noticed most of these edits and cuts using old & New footage. We use to watch the Three Stooges at Strawhat Pizza Parlor,on Fridays as that was Pizza Night,& they had one of the first Huge Rear Projection TV’s

Love all your videos, I watched a lot of your I Love Lucy videos and just discovered the Stooge playlist. I've loved them my whole life. The Joe Besser video was fascinating, never knew about the "secret contract." Have you ever done any research on Curly Jo. (I personally never cared for him). My understanding is he pretty much joined them begrudgingly.

I remember this short, Rick. But when I saw it, I think it was renamed. I remember the ghoul character behind them. Is why I say that. Did they rename shorts over the years? Just wondered. Interesting information though about Shemp. Good video as always. Take care

Mr. Rick how many of your subs are over 60? When I was 5-8 yo (EARLY 60's) I got up at 0600 every Sat to watch an hour of my Stooges, I thought they were reusing some content but being a kiddo I didn't know it was possible.
