You have to think about how TV was made in the 1960's. It was made for standard definition TV's that were receiving grainy over the air transmission instead of high-definition digital video. I guarantee that practically no one saw the mustache in the quick cuts they were using for the fight sequence in the days before pausing the picture was available. The producers never envisioned us being able to scrutinize an episode frame-by-frame like we can today. In their estimation, the show would run once for its original broadcast and once in reruns and if it was lucky, a few times in syndication. Regardless, I can't see anyone being shocked that they would use a double in this scene.

This videos main focus was the tigers paw and the dudes hand haha
@jagmarc8 ай бұрын
60s was long before 'standard definition' was heard of, back then had way more temporal resolution i.e. the scan lines on the screen dissappeared because there's so much wide band real time information that you didn't notice the lines
@Macdelaven8 ай бұрын
Also, VCRs were not available and most people at the time had black & white TVs. Most campy shows of the 60s could not hold up to any visual scrutiny. It's fun to highlight them though so thanks for the effort!
@jagmarc8 ай бұрын
The color wasn't important in the 60s when TVs were mono, in fact when color first came out in UK many people used to have de saturated picture because too much colour distracting. You really could then watch a snooker game in monochrone and know which color was which by the shades of gray. Interestingly, the Batman series in UK even though in monochrome then was very clear movement. By contrast some other American TV shows less 'live action' and more 'spoken dialog' even though they were seen in color they had horrible blurry smudgy movement compared to the picture quality of Batman. I think it was because programs like Batman may had been delivered in film print didn't go through a conversion.
@miketype1each8 ай бұрын
Also, they had little time to film, as production costs were high. These "goofs" are production crews trying their best to stay on schedule. We may have noticed these "errors" at the time, but the action was so fast, maybe we didn't believe our own eyes? Nonetheless, it is cool to catch a glimpse of how these shows were made.

Great find Rick... Back then we only had TV to see the episode and no way of slowing it down.. As far as the trainer doing the scene, I think it may have been dangerous for him wearing a scary black mask and cape. The tiger could have reacted in a more aggressive or confused manner and harmed him.. Another mustache trivia... Ceasar Romero (The Joker) refused to shave his off in all his appearances and they just ended up plastering it with the face color to try and mask it...

Even the position of the 1940's and 1950's Humphrey Bogart's belt is comical by today's standard's. BTW, the use of the trainer reminded me of Lon Chaney's character getting attacked by a "wolf" in "The Wolf Man." There’s a “making of Star Trek” book from years ago that explains this. They had done this since filming began way up to digital media when this was used. It's not a trick, it was called a technique. Gilligan's Island episode had the same situation. When the tiger drifted onto the island, Gilligan was the only one the tiger liked. When Bob Denver had to shoot the scene in close proximity to the tiger he said he just froze. Camera angles, camera shots (then called trick shots) used the trainer. Why didn't the trainer shave his mustache off? It's now thinking that is not then thinking. "We need a tiger and trainer. Hire one we can use." No need to shave it off. The tiger was the actor. The trainer controlled the tiger. He was hired to make the tiger work. Not to shave. Some actors insisted on doing stunts like these in order to have bragging rights. I can't remember what 1960s actor insisted on doing his stunts with, yes, a tiger. They used a real tiger. Shooting the episode, the tiger struck forward at the camera man doing a straight on shot. To protect their actor, a 3 or 4 inch thick sheet of tempered glass was in between both to protect said actor. You want fake? Johnny Weismuller's underwater fights with crocodiles was a stuffed rubber croc prop in Tarzan. They reused the shot in the Denny Miller remake of Tarzan in the late 50's or early 60s. Since it was a color film, they put an optical shading to it to hide that this was not Miller. Just informing. I'm old. I'm 60, have been there for most of this, and know the history.

There is this thing all you "youngsters" forget. The old school CRT TVs had what is called "overscan". What it boils down to is this. There is a 7 - 10% boarder all the way around the image that was NEVER seen by viewers watching on the standard TV screens. That part of the image has only become visible when we started watching on digital flat panels. So its no surprise producers would let a gaff like this go. I have noticed the man's mustache in recent years. At any rate, "The Purr-fect Crime" was, as you say, the title of episode 19, part 1 of that Catwoman two-parter. But then you tell how what you see is in part TWO of it, which is episode 20, "Better Luck Next Time". Oh well. Earlier in Part 2 I noticed that during the "Part 1 recap" there's a shot not actually from Part 1 showing Batman walking over to choose which door to open, and this appears to be the Batman with the mustache again! Also, I noticed, I think way back in 1966 even, in Part 1 itself, when Batman is faced with the choice of doors, he chooses the door on the RIGHT, and we cut to the door sliding open to reveal the tiger; but as the tiger leaps out of that room (complete with freeze-frame), we can see that it's leaping from the LEFT-hand room (because the buttons to open each room were both on the wall between the doors, and we can see the button TO THE RIGHT of the room the tiger is leaping from, meaning that the room is ON THE LEFT of the pair of them.) Thus it seems that Catwoman had it rigged so that no matter which door Batman actually chose, the tiger-room would be the one that opened (not that it seems possible that Catwoman was behind EITHER door anyway, as she was off in the main hideout room where they were watching what was happening to Batman and Robin down in the 'cat'-acombs)!
@aviatortrucker62858 ай бұрын
Cesar Romero, who played the Joker had a very distinct mustache. He too, would not shave it off so they put gobs of white make up to cover it. If you look closely at the joker, you can actually see that he is sporting a mustache beneath his white makeup. Another issue or photograph trickery was when Batman and Robin were scaling the building with the rope. They were actually walking across a floor turned sideways. There was strings that pulled their capes straight back to make it look like they were going up the building. The guest star who peered through the window was actually coming up through a floor hatch door. Noticed that Batman and robins cape were perfectly rolled straight back, and Batman’s cape was not, or I should say Robin, who was in front, his cape never was touching Batman, who was directly behind him.

That was true for Season 1, true for most of Season 2 (there were a couple of 3 parters), but mostly untrue for Season 3. During Seasons 1 and 2 two Batman episodes were aired per week (Wed & Thurs), which was why they were 2 parters; but during Season 3 there was only 1 episode aired per week.

I heard about the tiger trainer but I did not know about the human hand swiping at Batman's cape. At the time this aired on tv there was no VHS, DVD, BLURAY or streaming to pause the episode.

It was Alfred! No one ever suspects the butler.

Reminds me of the episode when Batman and Bruce Wayne had to be in the same place, and Alfred drives up in the Batmobile in the cowl and any fool should have known it wasn't Batman., also with a mustache...
