I'm 45 and switching to graphite was the smartest thing I've ever done. Maintained my numbers from 25 years ago and something you didn't mention... WAY nicer to my elbows at impact as the shafts are a more natural shock absorber than steel. I was dealing with "tennis elbow" from practicing too much, and that improved significantly. Was definitely concerned about shot dispersion when I first switched, but shafts have improved so much over the years that wasn't an issue at all. Per usual, great video....

As a 27 year old high handicapper, changed my steel irons for Graphite shafted irons and it has considerably improved my game and handicap. So much easier to swing and hit, especially considering my muscles aren't built like a tour pro and I don't hit my irons flush every time. Helped with my confidence too. I think Graphite shafts (apart from the price) is a very good way to go, especially for mid to high handicappers. Nice video Rick. As always! From Zambia 🇿🇲

I play Callaway Apex CF16's (so I guess they're 4 years old now?). When I was getting fitted I first tried the standard steel shaft and liked the way it felt. The fitter suggested I try the graphite shafts ("What am I - an old man?" - not quite but close). The clubs felt lighter, head speed was up and I was hitting five yards longer. Sure, it was a few hundred more but I'm very happy with the decision. The Callaway shafts are UST Mamiya Recoil which are a reflective silver so if you aren't looking closely you wouldn't know I wasn't playing steel shafts.

As a 27 year old 8 handicap I finally got fitted for a set of irons a couple weeks ago and I’ll say trying the graphite shafts was the best thing for my game. Not only did I gain a lot of performance for my game, I did so while being able to do so with a smoother swing lighter swing. Truly glad I went in with a open and willing mind to try something out of my norm.

I moved on to a set of Ping G irons and wedges 3 years ago and had them made up with the Ping Alta "R" graphite shafts tipped 1/2" shorter to add 2-3 cpm. BIG difference! Another great review, Rick. I've been playing golf for 23 years but switched to all graphite shafts 4 years ago because of my elbows (golf elbows). My doctor, who also plays golf, recommended I switched to graphite shafts if I wanted to keep my elbows intact & keep playing golf. At first I was hesitant but sure enough, my doctor was right. Not only my elbows don't feel the vibration of the club when I hit golf balls, my shots actually went farther and I've been playing much better. The graphite shafts are really worth it for me.

Rick, I am a high handicapper golfer and wanted to get a new set of clubs. I wanted to get fitted to get the best clubs suitted for my swing and something that can hopefully help me to be a little more consistent. After trying different club heads and shafts it was decided that grafite shafts were the way to go. I am also having the shafts purged which is supposed to also help with consistentcy. I unfortunately haven't gotten them yet, but I appreciate this review. It does give me some confidence that I made the right choice. I should also point out that I went to a paid fitter that is not brand specific so they were not pushing any particular manufacrlrure. Hoping to get the clubs soon so I can give them a test before our golf season ends here in Ohio. I have been enjoying you videos and podcast, keep up the good work

Rick, Due to some elbow tendinitis issues a couple of years ago, I went from steel-shafted to graphite-shafted irons. It took some experimentation with shaft weights over the last two years to get the right graphite shafts (for me), and although my tendinitis is long gone, I am currently playing a set of hybrids and irons with KBS TGi (Tour Graphite iron) shafts in an 80 gram weight range - stiff flex. The actual shaft weights range from 80.5 to 82.5 grams and I have these shafts in all but my sand and lob wedges (I actually play a 95 gram graphite shaft in my 49* gap wedge). I find control as well as feel to be superb with these shafts, which KBS designed to perform and play like steel, but with the vibration-dampening benefits of graphite composite. I have now played about 100 rounds of golf with these grapite-shafted irons, and I am considering putting graphite shafts (maybe 95 to 110 grams) in my sand and lob wedges. The performance is great with my graphite-shafted irons and I no longer have to worry about elbow, wrist and shoulder pain from practicing and playing golf as much as 4 or 5 times a week.

I think a better way to see the difference between graphite and steel shafts would be to use the launch monitor indoors with 2 sets of identical irons except for the shafts. That way you can accurately tell the difference between club head speed, ball speed, launch angle, distance, spin, etc. Even just comparing the SW, 7i, and 4i to get an idea of what the differences are like rather than having to do the full set. Maybe a future video!

I have played them in stiff steel (right after I bought them in 2019) and graphite in 2020 (Kuro Kage stiff). Each iron is about 25 grams lighter. I noticed approx. 5 yards extra distance, slightly higher flight, improved sound as you said, excellent consistency, easier to swing, no elbow tendinitis. I will never play steel shafted irons again. And the 3 iron with the graphite shaft is a rocket off the tee 220+ yds.

I used a Wilson pitching wedge with a graphite shaft for years. I only just stopped using it since I started up again recently. I love the feel: the lightness and spry-ness of the flex, while having a slappy feel. My Taylormade wedges just don’t feel the same! I bought the PW at a Wilson sale at a factory, so I got an amazing club for around $10-$15. Similarly I got a Wilson driver at the same sale that feels like absolute butt. Sounds like an aluminum baseball bat (in the most literal sense), and it LOBS the balls HIGH. If the ground is wet at all the ball is getting corked in the fairway! I guess I bought 2 pitching wedges that day! A normal one, and one only used off the tee box! Haha! Love the videos! Love the PW though!

Rick, your swing looks more relaxed with the graphite shafts: like you're only using 85% of your power. With the metal shafts, it looks like you're swinging too hard - almost like you're trying to live up to your shaft stiffness. Why don't you take your buddy, Peter, out to the course and have a match with the both of you using graphite shafts? I'll bet neither of you would be trying to kill the ball and you both would hit straighter. Bluntly put, golf requires both power & technique; technique is best executed at 85% power. If you swing as hard as you can, you lose accuracy. Let's see you beat Pete go head to head one more time..

Played matchplay (and lost) against an old tour pro who plays every shot at 80-85%. Was Mr consistent and straight on everything.. (annoying draw on every drive) and he generated spin. He told me that if he needs to he can dial it up, but can play par golf all day long using that relaxed swing. Match the club to the swing to the distance.
@Bog29014 жыл бұрын
SAS golf made a video about one length irons which made a similar point. Just for the longer clubs (3-6, set all being 7 iron length iirc), the shorter and consistent shaft length reduced maximum distance but made them easier for him to hit, so he'd middle it every time and actually gain distance (and accuracy) on average. Though it'd be best to run a mixed set since distance control becomes difficult with longer shafted 8-PW.

I feel one of the most important considerations when choosing bx graphite and steel is considering physical implications for those of us with joint pain, radial tunnel, golfer's elbow, carpal tunnel, etc. Unless you are actively installing a good vibration dampener in your steel shafts, graphite makes an excellent choice for reducing muscle and joint trauma. Another thing is that...yes, graphite by its nature is lighter than steel. However there is a misconception that going graphite AUTOMATICALLY means a lower weight. Take my wedges: I used the Paderson Kinetixx TS-Wedge shaft and this beefcake is a raw 128 grams at just 37". There are so many options to make anybody happy. Don't forget the Steelfiber shafts from Aerotech, either...UST Mamz heavier Recoil, etc. Cheers!

Then I started going to the range every friday and playing a round once a month. Fairly soon, my swing was becoming more consistent and I ended slicing pretty much every single club in the bag. They were all graphite. I ended up get a set of Calloway irons (after being fit) that were steel shafted and my swing evened out. I can shape shots now and I do not slice them.

Thank you for being candid with the outcome. I've seen enough of these videos where good players such as yourself seem to have an image/ego issue that prevent them from putting graphite shafts on the same level as their steel shafts; it's always the same "whippy", dispersion, etc. The overwhelming majority of golfers can use a little more speed in their swing, less strain on their back and arms/wrists, and their accuracy and distance control with their steel shaft are atrocious anyway so playing with graphite shafts won't make any discernible difference anyway. I do agree with you on the cost criteria though.

Control used to be a concern with graphite shafts in irons when they first became available. Some of the control issues were due to things Rick noted in the video regarding feeling the weight of the clubhead because people had a tendency to overswing the graphite shafted clubs which generated more shaft twist. The current tech is so much better regarding torsional stiffness so the clubhead twist is not an issue. I personally like graphite in irons because they also can dampen vibrations and add clubhead speed without swinging harder.

Interesting stuff, Rick! I bought Apex 19 irons with R-flex graphite shafts (68 grams, I think) last year and I love them. It only took a round or two to get used to the change in feel/flight. I've picked up some carry and height with my shots and have found them to be just as accurate. Although admittedly my ball-striking has improved quite a bit since I got them, and I've never tested them against the same irons with steel shafts, so I can't say for sure if they are more or less accurate. But they're definitely longer! The real benefit has been the reduced strain on the old elbows and wrists. BIG help with my tendonitis. I still have steel shafts in the wedges, because I like those to be heavier anyway. I'm 47 and a 6 HCP.

It didn't take me too long to adjust to graphite shafts. Being an OG (old guy in my 60s), two years ago I went from Project X 5.5 flex in Mizuno MPs to UST Mamiya Recoil 780 ES F4 flex in Taylormade P770s. The biggest difference was trajectory. I have always been able to hit the ball high, but the Recoil shafts increase the trajectory a little bit more, so that was the primary adjustment. Distances were pretty comparable because club head speed was slightly higher with the Recoil shafts (being around 30 gm lighter). Originally wasn't sure I was going to like them, but I think they are great.

I know this has been out a while but, I am approaching 60 probably a 12 hcp although I can play under that as well and have a pretty strong swing. I have experimented with graphite and steel over the past decade or so and switched to graphite in my irons (95 gram stiff) a few years ago. The main reason isn't anything to do with performance. Every year I have a few marathon golf weekends....100 holes over 3 days and a couple of of 72 hole weekends. Do that with steel and my hands get tired and eventually sore. Performance and enjoyment suffer. That doesn't happen with graphite. They dampen the shock transmitted quite well. It's amazing how much difference that makes to your hands.

I’ve recently acquired a set of irons with graphite shafts and reshafted some wedges with graphite. In early season, they felt great, especially when a bit cold outside...even scored really well. However, as time went on and weather warmed, my distances started to suffer and I started cutting across the ball often. It turns out, the lighter graphite shafts started influencing me to cast the club, especially as the season revved up and my speed was up to norm. I switched back to my other irons with heavier steel shafts and, once I identified the casting, was able to gain control of my game again. Now that I am aware of the issue, I feel like I could switch back to the graphite set and swing accordingly, with an attention to tempo and later release. Just something to be aware of for those considering the switch to graphite. They feel great, but minor swing/timing adjustments may need to be made if you are used to steel shafts.

20 years from now Rick, you'll be playing graphite or whatever they have equivalent. Retired a couple years ago. Demo'd various heads and shafts at the range. When I narrowed it down, went and got fitted. So Callaway Apex Pro (2017) with UST Recoil 95 graphite shafts in regular. I had stiff shafts in my wedges. A year later found out they offered Recoil regular shafts for my wedges and switched. Swinging the wedges with stiff steel felt like hitting the ball with a baseball/cricket bat, no give. Much better with the Recoil shafts. 69 years old and handicap has dropped to 9. Best round this year 73. Just wondering , have you ever hit balls with a midsize grip? A few tour pros do. Mickelson being one. You might give that a go.. Love the vids btw.

As you get older, graphite shafts will be more forgiving and make playing golf more enjoyable. Key is, you need to make the right choice in graphite shaft makers. Steel shafts are pretty easy to make when it comes to shaft stiffness, flex and torque but trying to make that happen when you go graphite is another universe altogether! I've been playing graphite shafts for a long time and the one thing I found is that graphite is more whippy and twisty than steel! Graphite shafts are usually softer and torque is unpredictable. But the STING I get (to my arm) when I mishit a ball with graphite isn't anything CLOSE to the numbness I feel after mishitting a ball with a steel-shafted club! I think graphite is the current/future for most of us amateurs playing golf. The pros can play steel all they want and I will stand in awe of their accomplishments but for a weekend duffer who wants to enjoy the game? Graphite is the FUTURE!

Hi, I love your videos. I am just getting back into golf after 30 years. I got golfers elbow my first time out using my sons ping g5’s. I did a little research and found that graphite shafts help in not messing my elbow up. I bought a set of ping I3 o-size with graphite shafts and so far they have not hurt my elbow
@robertakerson71864 жыл бұрын
I also developed "golfer's elbow" with a new set of Ping irons, Eye 2+ model with their steel shafts. Therefore I reshafted with graphite and it made a big difference in the shock to my elbow so it healed OK. What I did not like with the graphite was that it seemed to deaden the feel of a hit too.

So I bought my 2nd set of irons and those were my first steel shafted irons. When I started hitting inconsistent shots with my steel iron I would change back to the graphite shafts and it would almost hone my swing back in and "recalibrate" my swing. After about 2 weeks of playing with the graphine I would switch back and my shots were way more consistent and I shot better. What I did notice in my shots and your 7 iron shots on this video is that I could produce much more spin with my graphite irons. My graphites were wilson blades and my steel were the Calloway Xr18s

_"The downside is you might hit it more to the right, more to the left, up in the air"_ This from a guy who has been using a graphite shaft in his driver and fairway woods for 20 years. Oh, and PING has no charge graphite shaft upgrade options. ca.ping.com/en-ca/clubs/irons/g710
@sebastienalbert11874 жыл бұрын
He’s talking for the irons. Using steel shafts in your driver and fairway woods would make the club incredibly heavy and almost unplayable. A graphite shaft will give you less control over the ball and less consistency on your Irons and wedges. On the other hand a graphite shaft is much easier to swing, and can be a great option, just in general for wedges and irons graphite will be less playable, will also be less consistent. Both great options depending on your handicap and ball striking consistency.

Johnny Penso Johnny Penso where in my comment did I say you can’t hit a graphite shaft in your irons. All I said is that in your irons you will lose a little control over the ball by using graphite. I clearly stated both are great options.
@kourt24694 жыл бұрын
@@sebastienalbert1187 false again. You won't lose accuracy from using graphite. As somehow who fits golf clubs every day and has tested basically every shaft in existence there is no drop in accuracy from graphite vs steel. The reason you see tour players using steel is because #1 that's what they grew up using and are accustomed too. #2 it's easier and cheaper to make a 130 gram steel iron shaft than it is to make a 130 gram graphite and most tour pros use heavier weight shafts in their irons.
@dlamish4 жыл бұрын
Interesting to see the results. The par 3 results were better than expected. Particularly since the shafts are SR (Ping nomenclature for soft regular or senior). I think it would be a fairer test (as well as a more appropriate weight) if you use the X flex you have in your steel shafts. I imagine it would add at least 20-30 grams to the graphite shafts with the more appropriate flex.

Graphite iron shafts are amazing. The technology in today's graphite shafts have made a low torque shaft very affordable to the masses. It used to be near impossible to find a low torque iron shaft in A/L flex at a reasonable price. Today there are great choices from Syntec, Accu Flex, iDrive, and MCS. Torque under 4.0 and prices under $13.00 Get your shafts "pured" or spine aligned before you install them. You can then install for max accuracy.
