He fought Funaki at 40, and Funaki had been rated number #1 in the world just a year earlier. Nobody said Rickson could beat Funaki, but he destroyed him. Rickson fought anybody who would fight in the two decades before that, without the benefits of weight-classes, one fight per six months (he did three in a night) and the huge advantage of training for your opponent. GSP studies his opponent for six full months, imagine someone studying you for six months and you get 5 minutes to study them.

Rickson's Family wanted him to fight in UFC 3 but he said I want a million dollars which of course was unrealistic. It would have been interesting seeing him fight in the UFC against much bigger and well rounded fighters than fighting smaller Japanese guys.

there were hardly any comptetions in those yrs,its not too hard to be undefeated with so few matches,he was in his mid 30s when the panams and mundial began but never competed.Thats not old when youve had so few matches and keep yourself so healthy like rickson.

my dear chap,masa funaki was never in his wildest dreams the number 1 fighter in mma,he actually never had a real fight before the rickson match and hardly any after it(pancrase isnt mma,it had no face punches ,no ground and pound and you had several lives by catching a rope).Anyone would have expected rickson to half kill funaki.At 40 rickson was fresh as a daisy and lightyears ahead of anyone in pancrase as a grappler.,Rickson fought 11 times ,he went an entire decade without a fight( 84-94).

rickson fought open weight and the early ufc was open weight up til ufc 10 approx.Bas ,dan and frank were his weight and frye only slightly heavier in those days.in the 80S ,Vale tudo only existed in a small way in brazil,zulu was completely useless but big,rickson didnt beat duarte at the beach,it was influenced by onlookers.The other matches were bjj,not fights,ive acknowledge hes a great grappler,not fighter.

Where would he fight these guys? In both UFC and Pride he would not be in any of their weight-classes. In 2000 he asked for the best guy in the world and got Funaki and beat him soundly. In 1980 and 84 Zulu was considered the best he beat him soundly. In 1988 Hugo Duarte was the best Luta Livre fighter, Rickson demolished him. In 1990 he beat Rigan Machado twice and Fabio Gurgel once (the two best in JJ). 1982 sees him in a brutal match with Sergio Penha (one of my favs). You are the coward!

arona is a huge man compared to sak,his striking is crap but packs power.Sak was finished years before he fought ralek,everyone recognises this,if renzo,ryan,royler and royce were embarrassed by sak,a complete novice to mma like ralek would have no chance.Pancrase changed to gloved head shots and ground and pound around 2000,before that it was shootfighting but not mma rules even though its on their record as mma.

@cuzz63 i know all about where the 400 record came from and they included spars with his own students even,ive seen the complete list of matches 10 yrs ago.Also hardly any of those matches involved strikes,they were grappling matches.Rickson had 2 legitimate public matches prior to jvt,both wins against the completely unskilled(but very strong) zulu.His record then should have been 2-0 whether or not he was paid for them.Dan severn had almost 1000 matches,did he claim that record in UFC 4.

there were very few bjj comps until the mid 90s in brazil and virtually none at all until the mid 80s.Several prominent bjj masters have confirmed this fact.Also the standard of any grappling apart from judo and bjj in brazil is crap in the extreme,thats why rickson could win those.He wouldnt even make a high school team in america in wrestling.Rickson is a great grappler but never proved it i competition simply because he didnt compete in the mundials or adcc.

i saw them all,the standard was low compared to now,same as all sports(this is sport bjj).If he thougth bjj was solely for self defense ,why did he do all the sombo,wrestling and bjj matches.Neither vale tudo or MMA is self defense either,its a match fight .An organised fight is illegal outside sport.If you want to talk about fighting,his record is full of atrociously bad opponents,at lest we know hes a great grappler if unproven.

Rickson is among the top 3 or 4 BJJ players ever but I don't think he would have been beating the best mma fighters of today even if he was prime. He didn't fight the best wrestlers in mma then let alone the ones now who can strike with the best of them. Still a truly incredible grappler though.

AS FOR HIS OPPONENTS ,they were absolute rubbish except for funaki,they either couldnt grapple at all or never fought nhb.He could have fought rutten ,either shamrock,frye,coleman,severn ,kerr,randleman ,vovchanchin , henderson etc all of whom were around in the mid to late 90s and all would have given him hell if not hammered him or any gracie.Instead he fought useless fake wrestlers like takada(everyone in mma knew takada cant fight)

its obvious rickson was better than royce,royce would beat nobody with a rounded game,hes terrible by todays standards.Takada had no fighting ability of anykind,he was purely a prowrestler with no amateur background,he never had a real shoot before rickson and had terrible grappling .Funaki could wrestle a bit but not high standard,not even close to US collgiate level and again never had a fight before that.Zulu had no training at all in anything apart from capoeira,he was useless but big.

sak can strike better than any of the guys you mentioned ,theyre all useless.Royce has the striking ability of a complete novice,the worst ive ever seen in a pro fighter.Funaki is a good enough(not great) grappler but never had a fight before that,pancrase had no head punches while funaki was there and no ground strikes at all.He was never in shooto by the way.I will concede that funaki was the only decent opponent rickson had but still not world class in mma.

if hes on a mission why is he doing hardly any seminars and charging a fortune for those ones.I was in his school in the summer of 1998/99 while on summer break from college,he was excellent himself but ive seen way better teachers,the man hardly ever taught for the last 10 yrs at his own school and never did anything for his ow association.If he wanted to spread the word, hed release dvds and do more seminars at reasonable prices and support his own affiliates,he does none of those.
