A departure it is!! ...Ethiopia has beautiful landscapes too just like the European countrie he visits but like most westerners, they can't seem to find it in themselves to showcase Africa positively and accurately. There are state of the art malls and freeways but I guess it's better to show poverty ,malnutrition and kids with flies in their eyes. There's poverty in many parts of Europe too but he can't cover that narrative. # Africans wake up and tell your own stories, no one else will do it for you.
@mercym17333 жыл бұрын
@@thikagal thanks i was also saying the same
@squares4u4 ай бұрын
@@thikagalThis is you giving a false narrative. European countries are so much more developed than any country in Africa, except perhaps the Seychelles. Ethiopia has an HDI of 0.492, which is 176th out of all counties on Earth. Don’t get me wrong - Africa has beauty and history like any other place, but to compare its poverty and struggles to Europe is just foolish. Westerners spinning a narrative aren’t to blame here, much as you’d like to think that way.

I saw the preview. It is absolutely marvelous that the gentle and thoughtful travel guide and commentator Rick Steeves is now branching out beyond Europe -- Iran, Egypt, and now Ethiopia. (Guilded churches and monuments to potentates who started wars was getting pretty boring), and, perhaps even more importantly, is now going "beyond traditional sightseeing" and is reporting on how the materially less fortunate (but no less interesting) people of our world live and on promising ways to improve their lives. I lived in Ethiopia for 7 years and am avidly looking forward to Mr. Steeves' presentation.

Thank you Rick for highlighting the beautiful country and people of Ethiopia. As the Executive Director of Water to Thrive, I've witnessed the growth and progress over the last nine years since I've been traveling to east Africa building water wells for those most needy, rural villages. You shared the poverty and struggles in a dignified manner and your questions at the end are consistent with my own inner conflicts...should I feel guilty (because I have so much and so many have so little)? Why should I care? Can I make a difference? In need, each of us can make a difference and it is the essence of our existence...to help others along our journey.

For example, he presents Axum as the capital city of the Tigray region. The capital of Tigray is Mekele. NOT Axum. 2) He says Ethiopia is a country the size of Italy. Also NOT true! Ethiopia is more than 3 times the size of Italy. 3) In many of his other travel videos, he presents the food and the culture...but, here he does not.

Ethiopia has up until now water issues -like Sudan - because for many , many years, the British avoided at all costs that Ethiopia build dams. The British wanted Egypt (their unofficial colony) to have water to supply instead. So Ethiopia (which like Sudan is the source of the river Nike has had famines and systematic lack of water). In Sudan the English committed genocides, literally, including the one in Omdurman (called battle of Omdurman) where they killed thousands of people. One of the English who took part in the genocide was Churchill.
