Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2018 | The heartland of England has sights that put the "Great" in Britain - its venerable universities, its royal heritage, and reminders of its industrial might. At Oxford and Cambridge, we’ll see where kings and prime ministers studied. At Blenheim Palace - Winston Churchill’s birthplace - we’ll connect with English aristocracy. At Ironbridge Gorge, we fire up memories of the Industrial Revolution. And all along the way, we’ll be driving on the left and polishing our pub etiquette. Check your local public television station for this Rick Steves’ Europe episode or watch it on www.ricksteves.com/watch-read... #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope #englandtravel

@@bigballssteve6797 the intentions of colonialism were not good ones. Colonialism was about taking land, resources and manpower. Millions were killed and enslaved and entire cultures and cultures destroyed. A side effect of this was that some of the advancements of the invading colonialists were adopted or left for the indigenous peoples when the 8nvaders decided to leave, if indeed they did leave. So, the intention of colonialism and indeed its effect was mass destruction and theft initially followed by an abandonment, whilst retaining a certain amount, or complete control (in most cases). This isn't meant to diminish your respect for the beauty of Britain, in this video. I'm afraid that at this time of living, Britain is in very bad condition. I've seen the British society going in decline since the early '90's and while many are living on the breadline, the legislation system is fully corrupt. A large number of British citizens are damaged by drink and drugs, obesity, diabetes and osteoporosis. It's fascinating how a world empire has plunged into a shadow of what it once was.

loved this episode... I think big part of that is because Ironbridge was the first scenic/historic location I visited on my first trip to England. I was visiting a friend who lived in nearby Shifnal and she took me to this charming old town to have a look around and then have dinner and beer at an authentic British pub! that year - 2007 was the year that the Severn had massive flooding and when I was there a few months later you could still see debris up at the level of the buildings, 20+ feet above the normal level of the river. and plenty of evidence in this video of the hot dry summer that north western Europe had this past year. we were in Belgium and the Netherlands in October and even then temps were in the 20-25C range and we only had one light sprinkle in 2 weeks which is unheard of!

Another plus for Cambridge if you are a WWII buff (sorry for lack of a better term) - is the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial just west of town. Quite an honor to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice...

While I am really enjoying the Rick Steves' travel videos, this one is a favourite - the visuals and presentation are brilliant as always but what sets this one apart is so much of useful information and history planted so wonderfully throughout the course of the video - very very impressive 👍

I admit to some bias because of where I studied, but I concur with Rick’s assessment of visiting Oxford over Cambridge...if you are going to pick only one. The city is more substantial and you’re at the doorstep of the Cotswolds and closer to Stonehenge and Winchester and Stratford all of which you should see. And Blenheim is jaw dropping. If you do visit Oxford, I recommend a pint at the Turf (try a scrumpy if you can) and a stroll through the Covered Market. During Term, you should also hear one of the good college choirs such as Magdalen or New. No offense to the Tabs, though - King’s is magnificent.
