I've seen the British society going in decline since the early '90's and while many are living on the breadline, the legislation system is fully corrupt. A large number of British citizens are damaged by drink and drugs, obesity, diabetes and osteoporosis. It's fascinating how a world empire has plunged into a shadow of what it once was.

loved this episode... I think big part of that is because Ironbridge was the first scenic/historic location I visited on my first trip to England. I was visiting a friend who lived in nearby Shifnal and she took me to this charming old town to have a look around and then have dinner and beer at an authentic British pub! that year - 2007 was the year that the Severn had massive flooding and when I was there a few months later you could still see debris up at the level of the buildings, 20+ feet above the normal level of the river. and plenty of evidence in this video of the hot dry summer that north western Europe had this past year. we were in Belgium and the Netherlands in October and even then temps were in the 20-25C range and we only had one light sprinkle in 2 weeks which is unheard of!

I admit to some bias because of where I studied, but I concur with Rick’s assessment of visiting Oxford over Cambridge...if you are going to pick only one. The city is more substantial and you’re at the doorstep of the Cotswolds and closer to Stonehenge and Winchester and Stratford all of which you should see. And Blenheim is jaw dropping. If you do visit Oxford, I recommend a pint at the Turf (try a scrumpy if you can) and a stroll through the Covered Market. During Term, you should also hear one of the good college choirs such as Magdalen or New. No offense to the Tabs, though - King’s is magnificent.

Another gloriously presented travelogue, this one letting us wander through the two most famous schools in England, Oxford and Cambridge. After reading “Sweet Thames Run Softly “ by Gibbings, my husband and I rented a longboat on the Thames one summer. That was fun, as the “eights” were practicing for the annual Regatta against Cambridge. The riverside pubs were part of the charm, but one stop for a “great British breakfast” was a stupefying experience. Fried liver, fried eggs, fried bacon, fried mushrooms, fried bread combined. As part of the vast field of knowledge so bountifully shown here, I’ve always been impressed by the fact that Cambridge is where the double helix and DNA were recognized by Crick, Watson and Franklin.
