Rick, you are a world citizen and a credit to human beings (and being human). Yes, we have several of your books. Yes, we always check out what you have to say. And yes, we appreciate your attitude toward practical travel, practical travel safety, and appreciation of the world's communities. Thanks for all you have done to help us get to know our "neighbors" across the planet.

You made the right decision about Greece. Never rush Greece. Greece has extremly diverse landscape, culture and history. From the Pelloponese, to Athens, Northen Greece, the Aegean, Ionian islands and Crete. It takes a good 8 days at least to enjoy Greece in my opinion. Also don't try taking trains to and from Greece. Greece itself has high speed train connections betwen cities, but the Balcans don't. Hint; Airtravel is not taxed in Greece, so its the cheapest in Europe. Go for it! Also try to visit the broader region too! Turkey is a nice place to go after Greece, Romania and Bulgaria are pretty awesome too! Don't forget Cyprus ;)

Now that I am nearing sixty in age and my back is getting weaker, I recently bought the smaller of Rick Steves soft-sided wheelie bags. Looks and glides great! Ready for more traveling! LET'S GO!!!

Some tips from a European. -when in italy, go to Luca instead of pisa -remeber that europe use 230volts instead of the 110volts in the US. -when in England, traffic comes from the left when you cross the street. -tons of restaurants or bars in europe have free wifi, check for open routers to download or upload photo's without using your 4G data. -remember that rules may be different between countries, weed might be legal in Holland but sure isn't in France or Italy

If you don't like travelling by train, rather rent a car, but you don't like the drive in busy Italian cities for example, you can rent a car. And then you look vor hotels outside the city center of in little towns nearby. You can almost be sure that you can have good public transport or a taxi to the city of choice. Trains are excellent in Europe and there are many airports. But personally I like to have the heavy luggage in my car. And smaller towns and villages take more planing and waiting if travelling by public transport. Also im Switzerland where I live and public transportation is excellent, we take often the car for convinience. But I take always the train when I go to larger cities like Basel or Zürich. Remember, old European cities are not designed for modern traffic. Parking places are rare and expensive.

I enjoyed watching this but have a few suggestions. If you have a smartphone with affordable data with you, download google translate. It's a great way to communicate. I go to Europe almost every year, so I bought an inexpensive unlocked smartphone to take with me. I buy a SIM card with data and minutes for each country I visit. Also look for free Apps that can be used as guidebooks. Buy ebooks instead of paper books for guides.

Thanks love your shows I just got to the part where you opened your suit case. WOW I have never seen so much clothes !!!!! You really do carry that much. Now I can't do that. I just have the place that I buy things send it to a box someplace where I don't exactly live if I buy something. I also designed what I call "Spy" Cloths. Too funny actually it really is reversible and button up and change over and layered like you said with colors that don't wash out or into other cloths. I have two pairs of good shoes like you have and about 2 days worth of clothes. I have been known to sleep with my cloths on. Yes I don't want an earthquake or crazy party or something bad happens and running around without my clothes on. Learned that in College. I can wear this shirt 4 ways. These pants have leggings, then tighter pants then over pants after that wind pants put in a few slips of insulation (cold at night) and I am fine while other people even the locals are freezing to death. It may be easier for a women. I must say he dresses nice in Europe. I wear most of my clothes on me say if I take a plane and then I put the extra stuff in storage I might pass along the way. And then if I need it just buy it have some extra money you need it for fun for warmth. In the summer I go to a bath and wash my clothes in the sink never touch the sink is the rule ! Very important not to touch the faucet or the sink but get your clothes wet put them on (learned in cross country running 5 miles over sand dunes and on black roads in the heat). Yes I wear just wet clothes takes them 15 minutes to dry in a desert or 45 minutes to dry in a place that isn't too humid. I have them on they are clean now and I am much cooler trust me. Can also sleep in a fold out hammock in a room never touch the bed or put plastic rolls out on the bed. And put the cold clothes on lay there in 5 minutes you are asleep while other people are just sweating to death all night and tired for days. Ok so...... I sometimes buy clothes for little money and throw them out in the next state or country of next month and dress like everyone else. I like to fit in and stand out and be different only in genetics.....

If I was an American travelling to Europe, I would suggest doing it differently. I would book an AirBnb on the outskirts of London as the hub location, since it's the easiest for English speakers. Pick a place close to a main train line. From there it's easy to pop into central London. Then I would fly to Paris, Rome, Amsterdam etc for day trips. using the cheap airlines. A flight to Amsterdam or Paris from London takes only about an hour. 2 hours to Berlin, 2 hours to Prague, less than 3 hours to Rome. And you can travel super light, no suitcases, often just the clothes you wear. Boarding times as little as half an hour before flying. Overnight stay on flights over 2 hours if you need to. Paris would be my 2nd choice hub, particularly if you know a little French. Madrid, if you speak some Spanish etc. Your hub location being where you can manage your trip the easiest and take a break from travelling if you need it. If you're very flexible on location leave booking the day you leave to get a late deal, otherwise book ahead. The advantage of being flexible on destination is that you can check the weather and travel disruptions at destinations before you book. Also consider switching visits to the big international cities for the regional cities. You may get a more convincing French experience if you visit Nantes instead of Paris, or for Spain, Seville instead of Madrid. The way Steve has done it in the video requires every connection to work. If one fails he might then be one day or more late for every future hotel booking on his trip. Flying from a hub location means you often don't even need to book a hotel.
@exilenm2
@exilenm2 6 жыл бұрын
That plan is not going to work. It doesn't take 3 hours to get from London to Rome - 6 hours is more like it since you have to get to the airport 2 hours before flight time and it will take an hour to from city to airport and vice versa. So 6 hours to get to Rome and 6 hours to get back. How much of Rome will you get to see?

How could u build an itinerary like that. Cutting out Greece or Rome is like chopping off an arm. You need months to travel Europe. Each city deserves a week or two each
@Magic_beans_
@Magic_beans_ 4 ай бұрын
That’s why he ends with “assume you will return”. Give Europe the months it deserves, but spread across several trips. His example is an old itinerary for his Best of Europe in 21 Days package tour, where the goal was to get a broad view of Europe. That’s why he hits so many countries. If the traveler’s intention is to dig into a particular area, they’d plan differently.

Dear I Love All of You There are only a small number of american things that make a bigger impression. And it's all about size. 1. It's huge open spaces and it's landscape diversity. 2. It's huge film and music industry that influenced the world even though 90% of the content is idiotic and bad influence. 3. It's huge economic growth and the developments that took place during the 20th century and how a former colony became the biggest economy and the most influential global power of our times. But as we all know, empires rise and fall. So the only impressive man made thing about America, it's power, will not last forever, and so far Europe had the same global influence, but for about 2 thousand years. Europe has more cultural relevance and value than the United States of America will ever have. Europe also has a beautiful geographical diversity and amazing cultural diversity. From Greece to Berlin to Amsterdam, from Italy to England, the Alps, Flanders, the Fjords, the enchanting coasts of the Mediterranean in Spain, Sicily, France, the beauty of Venice and the Dalmatian Coast, the history of Rome, Paris and London, the vineyards and the amazing food of Provence, Tuscany and so on, the elegance of Vienna. And the reason why everything is not in English is because Europe is a continent with lots of countries, and a union with most of those countries. The social aspects are approached in more innovative and harmonious ways, look at the Scandinavian countries, Switzerland, Austria, some states of Germany, Holland. Places that actually work properly. Also in the crisis hit south of Europe, quality of life is still high in it's simplicity, and how could people not enjoy the culture there, and the sights, and the weather, and the food?. The human development in Europe place many of it's countries in the top. And as Europe has some underdeveloped countries, or the EU has some underdeveloped states, so does the US. The quality of life in the US is high, but there are more people in Europe (in countries like Norway, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, the Netherlands etc.) that have a higher quality of life and they don't live in gated communities or upscale neighborhoods or stereotypical suburbs, but it's pretty much all over their countries. Europe tries to bring people and business closer together by offering a modern efficient and cleaner infrastructure while the US throws away such ideals, one way or another. Yes both Europe and the US have economical problems. We can't really know which one is worse, but at the moment both are bad. Yes both Europe and the US have social problems. But I think the problems that the US have are worse. Yes you can carry whatever gun you like, but so can everyone else and you can always be outgunned. Yes anything is possible in the US, but only in certain parts. Also anything is possible in Europe but only in certain parts. Europe is not perfect. And neither is America. Or whatever, the US. But overall, Europe seems to be heading in a better direction by investing smarter in it's future.
@bryqn9503
@bryqn9503 10 жыл бұрын
***** Well, what can I say? I know it's fashionable to bash the US. But I am being realistic and I know that Europe has lots of problems though. Yet, most of Europe has cleverer approach on different situations. And lots of people in Europe benefit of free good quality education and healthcare. (Can I ask where are you from?)
