This goes deeper. The loss of identity for sportsmen when they retire or suffer career ending injury can be earth shattering. However, Ricky says he was a heavy drinker and substance abuser. Has Ricky been treated for addiction and the underlying causes in his life? There may be more unresolved issues under the surface. Addiction is a mental illness.
