The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Rick's only appearance on the Sullivan show. He performed "Your Kind of Lovin'" and "Fire-Breathin' Dragon" which were two sides of the same single. Despite this song being really good, it didn't chart on the Hot 100, as Rick's chart career was in a slump at the time. He was an under-rated singer and performer, and this is a great upload! The more I listen to this song, the more I like it.

Great song. Considering how many hits he had in the late 1950's and early 1960's, I'm surprised he was never on Sullivan. Could it have had something to do with Ozzie not giving his approval so he could save Rick's singing appearances for Ozzie & Harriet's weekly show on the ABC network?
@TomElvisSmith

@@shave-a-thon3415 That sounds likely, now that I think about it, because Rick didn't perform on many other TV shows of the time while Ozzie and Harriet was on.

His style was not suited to the 1960s. He did better. In the 70s. Of course, his heyday was the late 50s

Actually, I think he would have done better if he had developed a country music style. Reading about his adult life, it doesn't sound very happy. He was dominated by his parents and his marriage (and divorce) degenerated into something quite ugly.

I believe Rick should have moved into country music at this time. He would have been able to make the transition and be welcomed by country music fans based on his TV stardom and rockabilly hits.

Rick’s only appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show; primarily because “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet” on ABC prevented him from appearing on a rival network....but “Ozzie” was cancelled a year before this broadcast so that allowed Rick to become a free agent...of course, Rick let his hair down 5 years later at Madison Square Garden and the rest is history...

I'll leave the battle to the Nelson sons, but Rick stopped with the "Ricky" when he turned 21. Looking and listening to this performance, I find it interesting that even two years in, Rick and Co. didn't show any influence of "British Invasion"-era fashion sense. I do hear, not a Jordanaires vibe in the background vocals, but more of a Len Barry-like Motownish sound. From what I've picked up, Rick Nelson valued his integrity.

Stupid song, stupid clothes, nice haircuts. Unfortunately, in those days, if you were young and your hair wasn't long, your records didn't sell. Ricky should have joined the anti-war movement and his songs should have reflected the anger building up during the time frame.
