You get like 2 water breaks in the entire 8-12 hour day so you never have to worry about dehydrating. You never feel like your life is on a constant loop when you have to run a whole 8-12 minute performance for the 3rd time in a row all because one person did not start off on their left foot.

Although, there are idiots out there who think it's a cakewalk, which is simply not true.
@flymast19 жыл бұрын
My folks are so sensitive here. What Rick Smiley is talking about is the paradigm in cultures here as it related to Historically Black College Bands and White University Bands. To attend college at an HBCU is a life changing event and along with it comes so many cultural traditions that have been around for years and the main one is the Marching Band, its just different culture and that culture creates an event, not a football game. It has its roots in African culture mixed in with a tid bid of minstrial show culture from the early 20th century. Once you see the differences "live and in person" you will know what we are talking about.

Most, if not all, black folks view half time and the band performance at HBCU football games as "entertainment." The band usually plays the same songs we listen to on the radio and party to when we get together. And, the band also busts some of the latest dance moves. It's part of our culture and I absolutely love it. In my humble opinion, the half time show at an HBCU is undeniably one of the main highlights of the football game!!!

The worst thing for me about being in the marching band in high school. was those hot uniforms we had to have on and they only washed them twice: once at the beginning of marching season and once at the end. I went to white schools, so are marching was pretty much what Ricky showed 1st. If I went a black school, I probably would of had a heat stroke doing all of that in that dancing in those uniforms. Rickey is hilarious but very accurate! I had the pleasure of marching in a corp style band in high school and a traditional style band in college. Both were an amazing experience to me and unforgettable. There is no need for negativity on either side of the fence. No matter how you look at it, the definition of MUSIC is in the center of both styles and influences. Music will forever be abstract so accept it for what it is! Hello all. I would like to say I love this skit. I didn't see anything racist about it. I had the pleasure of matching with both types of bands. I marched for Oklahoma State University. I also marched for a Louisiana All-Star Band. I even marched in Drum Corps for a few years. All of these groups have different styles, players,, and audiences of all colors. I don't see how one could be so upset about a skit. I'm also a Music Ed. Major. And to be honest some days I wanna listen to Rap, somedays it might be country. Or even classical. I just try to enjoy the music because that's all the performer is aiming for.

@MusicNerd20149 жыл бұрын
+Angie Williams I agree with you on that, but Jacksonville State University is way better than Ohio State. JSU does the same style the same style as the bands +Carlos Lopez mentioned, with the exception of our dance line piece every year. Like this past year, we played Salvation is Created, Verdi's Dies Irae, Requiem for a Dream, Gonna Live Till I Die, Death and Transfiguration, Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral, Ode to Joy, and Mvt 3 from John Rutter's "Gloria" in our show called "Salvation is Created: A Journey from Darkness Into Light". That's the kinda of show style I'm partial to. The story line-ish shows.

Very funny. I'm a Jenison High School Band Booster and marching band parent to a trumpet player. Very different styles of marching, music and shows. We always loved the way the black bands danced and jazzed things up when I was growing up in the 60s and 70s. My older siblings were marching band, old school white marching bands. These days the Bands of America and Michigan Competing Bands Association have some very good shows. Broken Arrow from Oklahoma put on Zo one year and had tuba players riding bicycles and playing at the same time. It was based on the Wizard of Oz. Jenison, burned Joan of Arc at the stake right on the field in 2012, smoke, flames, everything: look for the video. Jenison had a very tough, entertaining show, Tempest's Fury, in 2011. Check out there Jenison High School Bands of America Grand Nationals 2011 performance to see what I mean. They won first place at the MCBA state finals the last three years. I do enjoy the kind of shows from the movie Drumline though. And Ricky is spot on. I love him. Going to share this with my white marching band friends. Note: even Jenison has a diversity of races represented in their band, so technically, it's a mixed, but mostly white marching band. = ) At the BOA regionals in Pontiac in 2011, there some great black bands doing the white show thing and they did it very well.

Allan Burns Why?
@allanburns600610 жыл бұрын
My ex-wife is from B.A. and I did intern teaching at that school. I don't think too highly of either one. Plenty of bands that rank behind them, should be placed well ahead of them. They are terribly over-rated ! Here is a fact that very few people know about; they have a VERY small number of students make the either of the 2 Oklahoma All State Bands. Pretty sad when you consider they are the largest high school in the state of Oklahoma and likely the largest number of high school band students enrolled. Throw in another scenario, Tulsa Union High School (2nd largest high school in Oklahoma), just down the road from B.A. follows similar suit.

EmpressOfWyoming58 . . .. . it is a bunch of bullshit ! nothing educational about it !
@EmpressOfWyoming5810 жыл бұрын
Allan Burns Broken Arrow does seem to have the favor of BOA judges, but they are a very good band. They march well, they play well. I agree, there are equally good bands who never place in the top 10 even. As far as it being non educational, are you speaking BOA? Or do you mean the BOA style marching band shows? I know that Jenison starts in June and those kids work their back ends off learning complex music and marching all the way through mid November. They train and condition daily, once school starts, having only Sunday off. Their program involves rigorous discipline that teaches many valuable life lessons. Their marching band experience provides memories that will last a life time.

For the kid who who said this type of marching would disgrace Sousa, you should educate yourself on styles of marching bands. There's SHOW STYLE and CORP STYLE. Corp style is more militaristic and that's what Smiley was making fun and people DO get up because it's not as entertaining.. Having said that, It does NOT distract from the fact that it is a highly precision type style. However,Show style is what you see most HBCU perform and it is just as difficult if not more so than corp style because it takes a heck of a lot more energy with the high stepping one has to perform and all those moves require precision while playing and instrument. I don't think Sousa would be disgraced by show style at all. His nationality was Portuguese/ Brazilian and he would have enjoyed the beat and rhythm and probably would have found it as entertaining just as others have, even the Queen of England and heads of state, who have invited them to their countries to play. Remember, these band DO know how to play classical music also. However, I'm sure he would have been highly disgraced by the goose stepping Nazi military bands using his music.

I enjoyed the term "goose-stepping"!! LOL!

hummingnectarbird I loved what you said until the very last sentence. Nazis did an overdecorated high step. Corp style marchers do a normal roll step.

Because white bands that arent show bands HAVE TO BE PERFECT to be entertaining. No offense but most show bands sound terrible, are out of tune, have garbage tone quality, and have no regard for their technique but no one cares cause they're LOUD. That being said there are crazy good show bands like Minor High School. College white bands are normally boring but I find the best bands to be in high school or Drum Corps International. DCI is loud but THE MOST CHALLENGING marching band sport there is. And I can say it's a sport cause it was on ESPN for years.
@Defnotken4 жыл бұрын
Josh 15 have you marched in a collegiate level show band? that takes actual physical training, arguably the same or even more than dci.
