Twenty years ago, I worked with a bloke, who had been in pantomime with Cilla Black. She had a scene where she came on stage with a glove puppet of a dragon and she was saying to the children that she need to kill it and asked them how she should do it. Of course, the kids were saying stuff like 'shoot it Cilla' and 'slit its throat Cilla', but one lad in the front row jumped out of his seat and shouted: Sing to to it Cilla! It was just at the point when the bloke had to make an entrance and bring her a prop. He said that he literally, entered stage left, exited stage right and was bent double with laughter, in the wings. He also told me that he had jokingly told her that he would nip round for coffee, the next time he was in the town where she lived, to which she replied that she would have him arrested. And she would, he said.

Anyway, turns out the couple used to do security for films and tv locations before they retired and had worked with many celebrities. So as the drink flowed and we were chatting. This morning tv show relocated to London because guests weren't prepared to travel up to Liverpool, This was in the late 90s-early -00s. So how come Cilla and everyone who made it big gets criticised for moving south to further their career?. I was brought up in a very poor area of Manchester, but I would never go back...Because I have moved on-not to a better area but I met my partner. I still speak about my days growing up quite fondly but you make new friends and a new base for your family. Liverpool is a lovely city though.

It’s pretty consistent worldwide. Places that are not successful have a love-hate relationship with their people who become successful and leave as a result. First they build them up for having made it. Then they seek to tear them down for having made it and moved on to bigger and better things… but every single one of them would do exactly the same thing themselves if they had the chance.

I've just watched Larry King interviewing Frank Sinatra. Frank unashamedly said that as soon as he could get out of Hoboken he did. In America, his drive and will to succeed was admired. Cilla does the same thing and is reviled for it. The hypocrisy is that any one of those people criticising Cilla would have done exactly the same thing given the opportunity. Envy and jealousy of success is one of this country's less attractive national characteristics.
