I am the son of a hardworking, honest, and genuine black African immigrant. This song is far from the music either of us listen too. however I remember being a child and my father playing this jus a boy and his superhero literally at that time. i didn't understand the lyrics back then but as I get older and my pops gets older it just hits different. A lot of my friends didn't have their pops present, I was fortunate and owe that man that world for raising me from a boy to a man. I feel the words in this my heart.

Revisiting old tunes from every genre is a great idea the older we get. A ton of the stuff we used to think was trash when we were younger turns into gold with a few years of life experience. Always remember to let your folks know how much they mean to you cause they can be gone in a blink… I learned that the hard way. Best wishes to you and yours.

My daddy passed away when I was 4 years old, so I missed out on a lot of life’s lessons from a daddy. I’ve always wanted to be a daddy’s girl and have a special bond with my daddy, I’m sure we had a special bond when he was living. I miss him so much!! But my great uncle and 2nd cousin taught me how to drive and taught me how to drive a stick shift. I have/had a great family, some have passed on and I cherish the ones that I still have with me.

Look around man, we're here for you. Dad just teaches you how to access that in him, dont doubt its also 100% in others too. Love yourself, look within, reach down and pull up, but don't forget to ask for help, you need to. Dads are usually there to teach that. I'm so sorry you missed it. My dad wasn't near me, but not dead. Still not much of a strong effect. I missed out too. Got none of these experiences to show for my living father. Don't spend too much time in the past or the future. Remember to live right now.

Dad's been gone for 33 years now, but remember him letting me drive as a young teenager and getting keys to the family car, before it was legal for me to drive, because he trusted me. When observing different things in life, he instilled a lot a lot of values of life and respect in me, that I'm so grateful for in this current world. Miss him so much.

Too true. We certainly could use more of this beautiful uplift of the Spirit. I was a Daddy's girl many many moons ago. I didn't know him until he left the military after WW2. I was about 3 yrs old. When he picked me up at the station I cried loudly. He was a stranger abd people were looking. Mother slapped my leg to quiet me. But he said, 'no no she just doesn't know me'. From that moment, mother said I clung to him and became his shadow. It must have been his voice. I know a good one when I hear it Mr Van Shelton.

I was 43 when my only son of 3 children was born. That same year, my Mom and Pop passed away within two months of each other. I feel so blessed to have been their son, and to be my little boys dad (and my girls too of course)! With the exception of the “mommy being gone” part, this song is spot on! Brings back memories from when I was a kid, and puts into perspective just how important it is to truly take in every second we have with the ones we love.

I've had 2 lines of the lyrics stuck in my head the last few days. I had forgotten the rest and who sang it. I had to Google it and it all came back. I remember when this came out. One of my favorites. I did not have a patient teacher like the guy in the video, but I have a very patient Father in Heaven. Songs come back to tell us something or God uses them. Oh Ricky, I don't think you knew how powerful this song was going to be for so many people. Thank you.

I lost my dad twice, once when I was ten and again when I was 37. I loved them both so much and am having a hard time finding anything to be hopeful about. Look at this shit world we allow ourselves to be in, I can’t wait to be with them again.

I almost lost my Daddy in 2021. The doctor's had gave up on him and said it's time to say goodbye. I knew better...spent every penny I had (almost 4 thousand bucks) on an ambulance to a hospital about 200 miles away. That was on a Friday. By the next Wednesday he was awake, talking to me on the phone and demanding a cheeseburger from McDonald's! I'm a grown ass woman with 2 teenage boys that need the onlyan whose ever ALWAYS been there for them to stick around as long as possible. He's my best friend and I turn right back to his little girl every time we're together. Thank God for you Daddy!! I love you!!

This song brings back some very very old memories. My dad taught me all about cars. The very first time I drove I wrecked my fathers brand new ford galaxie. It had a 390 in it and when I turned the corner I went to fast and lost control. Wow do I remember the trouble I was in not just with dad but also my neighbor that I hit. Then came the law man and the finally the judge. It was lot for 10 year old to take in. I learned my lesson folks. I really miss my dad. God gave Ricky a gift that truely is for the world to enjoy.

He who learns must suffer. And even in our sleep pain that cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart, and in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom to us by the awful grace of God.

Friuli US base in my region in Italy. Grew up listening to it and dreaming one day I was going to meet a US boy and fall in love and my dreams come true. GREAT song and love you even better singing Christmas songs. So many years you better ed my holidays with your voice even spending the holidays alone. Your voice is AMAZING. I don't know where I will be but have to listen to your voice on Christmas and will melt again like I always do. Angela Umbria Italy :)
