This is my homemade rat zapper that I was forced to make a while back because I had a problem with 2 rats that found their way into our home, chewed up expensive HD cables and electrical wires, as well as plastic water lines causing hundreds of dollars in damage. Normally, I would chose not to kill the rats because I grew up with many Gerbils as pets, but when you have highly destructive rats, which are very smart, you must kill them to put an end the problem. Most people cannot afford to throw hard earned money away repairing extensive damage caused by rats. The device uses the high voltage joule thief circuit(shown in a video that I uploaded to my channel), to charge up 2 high voltage capacitors which I removed from an old CRTV. The power supply is (1) Li-Ion 18650 cylindrical battery which is charged by a simple 300mA circuit. The circuit tapers off charging current as the voltage nears the maximum voltage of 4.18V. Also included is a simple battery voltage indicator. This circuit uses a "lower" voltage(450-500V) at high current, compared to the devices sold in stores which use very high voltage(5,000V+) at a lower current. Both are deadly.

• High Voltage Joule Thief
If you cannot make a HV Joule Thief as shown in the video above, DC power supplies are available. Visit the link below. Output up to 450VDC(Cheaper than Ebay). Be warned, the output is deadly, and I do not encourage anyone to duplicate this device. Duplicate the device shown in this video at your own risk. You accept full responsibility for any injuries or deaths resulting from the use/misuse of this device.

I think there’s a grain of truth in some of the rude comments on here. We spent twelve mintues watching you demonstrate a plastic box with some switches on it. What you said was very interesting, but it would have been better if you’d gone through a schematic.

it would be awesome to see it in action

I used wood to separate electrodes in a sensor once. I discovered that over time, the wood absorbed enough moisture out of the air that it's resistance began to drop significantly and started tripping the sensor circuit.

Thanks very much for the idea. We have squirrels getting into our engine compartments, chewing wires and connectors.

this is a very good video , i love the way you explained how this works ,,i'm not the greatest with electronics but you explained it very well so even i could understand it ,, and have since made my own version of this device ,,mine is an ALL in 1 unit with the charge controller and batteries in one unit ,and the electrode plates are in a box covered so none of my cats or dogs can get to them ,,and it works extremely well , it charges to almost 700 volts

This is exactly what I'm looking for. I tried to open the link for the schematic to the control panel, but the link is no longer available. Can you please update the link? I would be interested in purchasing a control unit from you if you could make one for me. Please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Any possibility of obtaining a schematic of your zapper design? We are contending with a persistent roof rat problem, and it's difficult to lure them into the commercial zappers. No other DIY designs I've found here or elsewhere incorporate the safety features that yours does.
