I love how the sopranos sing that high note almost casually... It gives a very different feel to the piece. Also, every time the tenors sing the "Hallelujah"... Very relaxed.. 😍 The best interpretation IMO.

I show this clip to my choirs to demonstrate focus and attitude. So often, choirs are either focused OR active. This is a great combination of the two.

Every time I hear or sing the end of this piece, I think of a workshop my choir did with Brainard. I still chuckle when I remember him galloping back and forth across the stage, arms a-flailin', in full preacher-on-fire mode, trying to teach us the timing of the back and forth with the high G's. "Then WHY? A-every, He deLIVered, YES he did! YES! Delivered Daniel from the LION! Oh yes, Oh tell me WHY? a-every, he deLIVered... Fun time. And we never sang the end wrong again after that

I can do a technical analysis too, but instead, let me say this performance leaves me breathless. It has everything that this wonderful and very demanding setting by the immensely gifted Moses Hogan calls for. In addition, I challenge any group anywhere to sing with more spirit and confidence that the well prepared Nathanal Dett Chorale. This group, this conductor, and this performance deserves my highest praise. I say "Well done".

I am used to this song being sung by quartets and not a choir so for me to have this kind of execution and performance is of the highest order. Well done as well.

It is just dependent upon the arrangement, but in the original first arrangement (not the original composition), the "Hallelujah" was attributed to the soprano.

This is most certainly gospel music. The classical undertone is slightly more forward in this song, but that does not remove it from the list of gospel pieces.

@Jubel06 What are you saying? Have you ever heard a Moses Hogan arrangement of an uptempo spiritual? Go get a CD of the Moses Hogan Chorale and listen. Let's also discuss vocal technique that was taught in 1930 and 2010...Its a different style of teaching now.

Alright for the Aeolians!!! I am from the Morehouse College Glee Club tradition myself lol. I actually like this presentation of this spiritual. I've spoken to "Dr."s William and Rosephanye Powell, Uzee Brown, David Morrow, Roland Carter and they all have commented on the difficulties of performing spirituals "authentically". We all know that the slaves would never have utilized these contrapuntal and polyphonic musical devices. I think authenticity in performance is a bit of a misnomer.
@blacsouljah13 жыл бұрын
A virtuoso performance, one of the best I've ever witnessed in my life! I'll be looking for their CDs!
@JSchnabbs14 жыл бұрын
@preslaysa614 Yes. It's called "interpretation". It's very popular in choral music. I know, they should really sing all spirituals the same way, don't you agree? >:)
@Operaandchant903 жыл бұрын
So tight! God bless Moses Hogan Also why is everyone in this so hot
@ged42414 жыл бұрын
@preslaysa614 I feel that when you say that this song lacked spirit, it is more because you (and me for that matter) are unaccustomed to seeing this KIND of spirit on this kind of song. I agree that this rendition of the song is atypical for Moses Hogan Music; his music was written for classical choruses, and yet there is something admirable about what they do. I guarantee Hogan is not turning in his grave; he had an administrative say in the running of this choir, and approved of them.
