Silly question I purchased my 1992 f150 4.9l and it has a d where the 5 should go.should I shift into that or leave it highest at 4. It has 1234d and then r for reverse.
@harley_benoit10 ай бұрын
No worries. It can be confusing. The D is inside of a white circle which is an O. It stands for Over Drive. It's just to let you know that when you shift into 5th you are using an overdrive gear, which you wouldn't want to do if you were towing, hauling a heavy load, climbing a steep incline, etc. Any situation where you need a lot of torque. Back in the day it was common for trucks to not have an overdrive gear. For example, my 1975 has a 3-speed with no overdrive, so 3rd is the 1 to 1. In my 1995 and your truck, 4th is the 1 to 1. So yes, you should use OD (5th) when it's appropriate to do so. It will allow you to cruise at highway speeds with lower RPMs. This will improve your MPG significantly and its better for your engine. I hope that helps!

I have a question so when your slowing down whatever gear you come to a stop on you can shift all the way back to 1st
@harley_benoitАй бұрын
Yes, you totally can, and actually you should. Doing so reduces wear on your transmission and improves your MPG. If you just need to come to a stop for a stop sign or whatever, there is no reason to downshift through all the gears. Just push the clutch in, use the brake to come to a stop, then once you need to start again put it back in first. Hope that helps!

Congrats on the purchase! As far as a certain speed for each gear, you pretty much have to figure that out yourself. It is different for every vehicle. Watch your tachometer (or listen if you don't have one) because the RPM's are the most important indicator of when to shift. It also depends on if you are traveling up hill or down hill. could anyone point me in the right direction ? I have a 95 f150 4.9l that won't start
@harley_benoit2 жыл бұрын
It could be a lot of things. Does it crank over or do anything else when you turn the key? Obviously, it could be your battery but I'm sure you checked that. Mine was having issues starting a while back. The issue ended up being that the starter wasn't grounded properly. If you have double tanks, try starting on both of them. I'm not a mechanic but I hope that helps.

@@harley_benoit it does crank over and when I turn the key the key you can hear the fuel pump and the radio will turn on. If I’m lucky the truck turns on occasionally

@@alfredoramirez6041 Like I said, I'm not a mechanic but I sounds like you may be having the same issues I had. So as far as the starting issue, the problem was a bad ground. Mine would also die randomly. The issue there was a sketchy connection in the distributor cap. After my truck randomly died for a fourth time while driving, I had it towed into a Ford dealer and they were able to resolve both issues. Hopefully that can at least point you in the right direction to look.

Looking to buy one of these trucks. How good are they for towing?

I think they're pretty good but I've never towed with mine

You can tow an atv around but I wouldn’t use an f150 of any year to tow anything heavier
@pete5382 жыл бұрын
I towed about 6500 without trailer brakes in my 5.0 and I definitely wouldn't recommend towing often unless it's occasional. Gets the job done but maybe not the safest tow vehicle

what rpm does it sit at on highway doing 65-70 mph?

About 2k

That would depend on the gears ratio, check in the driver's door jamb for the axle code.
@bigtermtech51883 жыл бұрын
@@harley_benoitNice! Based on that, you probably have 3.55 gears as I cruise at 70-80 mph at 2k with my 3.08s.

Meanwhile when you have a 300 i6 + NP435: Wanna do 120k/h on the highway? At 1:1? That will cost you 3 grand a minute. Surprisingly tho even with it being pure carb it doesnt do too horribly on gas nor does that seem to be all that bad to run it that fast i guess as long as its not constant for hours but still. Doesnt slow down up hills despite gearing.

@@harley_benoit no crap but you’re shifting like you have a stroke in the middle of each gear, you don’t have to take that much time to where the motor revs down so much and it jumps when you put it into the next gear, just clutch in and put it in gear effortlessly and fast

There is no reason to downshift through the gears when coming to a stop. Brakes work just fine. Owners manual actually recommends against it because it decreases mpg
