I had a nearly perfect attendance record, no absentees for years. On an especially hot 100+ F day, there was also a wildfire burning with smoke covering one of my neighborhoods, I has finished a 12 hour shift in a dilapidated LLV that management refused to have fixed correctly... that's another story for another day. Anyways, the next I had a migraine and could hardly see or stand. I called in using the automated line. In my sickened state I slept all day. The next morning I saw I had a missed call from the office and a voicemail from a manager demanding I better had a sick note from a doctor or will be fired. First of all, they can't legally do that. Second, I was still too sick to care, but I went to urgent care anyways. I was treated for heatstroke. there was an investigative interview And I was disciplined. I was told me they thought that because I was upset at a coworker whom kept purposefully damaging my customers packages over something petty... repeatedly and after telling management about it... repeatedly , and they did nothing to correct the situation, that I was upset and petty enough to call in sick. They then demanded to see my phone to they could prove I was called the day of. I refused, I was then asked how the other party should be disciplined for their transgressions. I said it was none of my business how he is disciplined, and Joel the Postmaster told me that he was letting the other coworker decide my discipline. So I was made a scapegoat. Joel Backofer Postmaster of Bozeman Mt. Shame Shame Shame.

It really is not fun during the summer where I work it gets too 110 degrees F plus 100 percent humidity and sure the customers are normally pretty great and sometimes they are very angry people for obvious reasons and it is discouraged for us to tell them yeah your mail hasn't been delivered because only packages really matter. I know it should not be that way but it is and we carriers work real hard to try and get all your stuff to you but we make mistakes cause we are human and we have 500 or more stops to make in about 5- 6 hours and we have management breathing down are necks to go as fast as we can and if we can be "safe" Then the poor clerks have to catch crap from both management and from the customers because a carrier made a mistake whether that person is the full time or the part time employee that did the delivery it also doesn't help that over time the post office has become a lot more abusive to its employees and the unions really cannot do much about it(most likely because they are getting paid off or something) it is a hard job it can be good if you get surrounded by the right people but that is not as high of a possibility as it once was.

Mail men complain a lot, the few good mail men I worked with retired or left. All that’s left are a bunch of complainers, these vehicles are extraordinary. They served their purpose and then some. There isn’t a modern vehicle that can handle the harshness of a mail man, CCA or T6 and keep on truck-in for 20+ years. Those that complain are the same ones who have routes that I got done in 2 hours as a CCA, but took them 8+... whenever I read or see these articles about how much it sucks to be a mail man, it irritates me as a former carrier knowing that it was never all that bad. If you wanna complain about something that’s legit, complain about the crappy management who no matter how good you are at your job keeps expecting more, and drives the hard workers to find other employment, leaving only the ones who take 8 hours to do a 2 hour route...
@jeffw12673 жыл бұрын
We've got plenty of runners at my station, even those with 20+ years at the post office. The problem is that they break all the rules in order to be faster and it makes safe carriers like me look bad. I wear my seatbelt and I shut the vehicle off when I step out of it. This takes extra time.

That's always such a cynical statement. And do what? There's not a lot of jobs out there that a carrier can do that would pay as well without having a degree. And the kind of jobs that are available have to deal with the heat and a lot worse. Most carriers are salary earning 50k+ with benefits and retirement contributions and paid holidays. Despite appearance from the customers perspective, It's not an easy job and it's 6 days a week. Now you want to talk about cry babies......imagine how much you'd hear about it if you stripped away parcel delivery entirely from people and they actually had to go to the store for everything. It's a mail man's dream to only have to deal with the mail.
@Novaximus7 жыл бұрын
Aww. Cut some slack man. Everyone complains about the weather right? Honestly, on hot days stepping out of the truck it feels like a refreshing cool down. You get the heat of the engine blowing on you through the vents on top of the feeling of sitting in a car with the windows up in a hot parking lot. For 4 to 5 hours straight day after day. It beats on ya. The harassment thing...I mean that's really situational. There's a nice way to ask a question and a harassing way. There''s simple questions and some not so much. Minutes add up quickly. A lot of it probably has to do with "talkers" we all know someone like this. There's no polite way to say, "please stop talking. I have a lot of shit to do by a certain time"

I'm guessing you're someone who works inside, and doesn't have to deal with that type of heat for 5-6 hours a day. Also, some of the offices are so big that you can't really feel AC in there either, and many carriers buy fans for their own cases out of their own pocket. Also, I'm pretty sure he wasn't complaining when he said that he likes the job, and loves the feeling of giving something to someone that has been waiting for it. The rural carriers are likely to be doing packages enough to cover walking 3-4 miles a day. City carriers do about 10-12 miles of walking a day. Yet, they don't complain about it. The ones who complain and can't handle it, generally do quit. But the ones that can handle it, continue to do the job. This is why there are people like him, who have done this for years. One more thing, Novaximus is almost correct when saying it is a 6 day a week job. It is 6 days for the regular carriers, but for the substitutes, we work on Sundays as well, due to a contract with Amazon, to deliver just packages on Sundays. My area alone runs 15 routes each Sunday, and each route has about 80 stops, with at least one package per stop. And the weights of these packages can be as little as 1 pound, up to almost 70 pounds. I love my job, I hate the heat and rain sometimes, but it is always worth it when every customer has a smile on their face after they get their mail.
