Watch Cleveland resident confront mail carrier over not delivering his mail

The backstory to this is that the carrier had a hold on the man’s mail because of the dog. The man was constantly harassing the mailman for not delivering his mail because of that. The customer went to the office to complain about the carrier. The carrier explained the situation the management. The carrier agreed to deliver his mail if the dog wasn’t out. When approaching the house the customer came out and right away questioned him “where’s my mai” while recording him. That raised a red flag for the carrier so the carrier turned away for his safety. Long story short this man now picks up his mail at the office.

There's a reason mail carriers don't deliver around dogs, some instances cats are major dicks so I get it but dogs? Most that do are elderly people that don't get much company, they look forward to that. This situation I'm only seeing part of, if their is more. But a mail carrier can walk passed an individual and put mail in a box without engaging. So for example summer is coming, people have kids outside playing in the yard or pool and what? People are supposed to stay locked in there house from 9-3? I don't think so. Common respect goes both ways. Did I say people should have to deal with animals running all over? No.

See I would justify this but I've encountered a different situation. I got a support puppy last spring and even on days I have no mail, without asking my mail carrier runs across the street to my yard feeding and petting my puppy without even asking. My yard is not even close to my mailbox. When I said no, because I was training my puppy. He would sneak and feed it when my daughter was outside with the puppy. I'm thankful for security cameras for all parties.

@@vikkileigh422 I can only speak for my own situation my mail carrier won't stop feeding all of the dogs in the neighborhood. He doesn't ask. It's literally common sense to ask before feeding and or approaching someone's animals. Yet my mail carrier decided to be aggressive and scream at me in front of my kids when my dog wasn't even outside because I called him on this. I'm glad my neighbors had the footage on camera but he's still going up to neighbors animals without asking and feeding and stroking their dogs. That's not part of his job and no one should have to tell a grown man to stop going up to dogs or in people's yards or reaching through fences feeding customers dogs without permission.

Shoo... as a rural carrier I was required by my job to put any package I could (not registered needing a signature mail or packages that didn't fit the box) in the mail box. As a mailcarrier, we also have the right not to interact with difficult customers. We are timed on our delivery routes and we are given the authority to protect ourselves. We are often many yards to blocks away from our vehicles and we choose to Not Engage with difficult patrons. They can pick their mail up at the Post Office. Mail delivery is a privilege not a right in the United States.

A dog will often interpret a carrier's hand reaching toward the customer as a threat and then lunge at the carrier. Carriers are not required to endanger themselves if there is a hazard. Customers opening their door upon hearing the carrier do not realize carriers are often attacked by pets who run out unexpectedly at those moments. It may be difficult for a lot of people to understand, but in this case, the carrier is actually right in what he is doing.

As the significant other of a mail carrier who has been attacked by various dogs. I appreciate the common sense responses! People literally have been disabled from dogs and their negligent owners not caring for the safety of professionals delivering to their home. I'm a mail carrier. We actually are told not to deliver in the presence of an animal as a general rule. I'm a rural carrier so it's a little different, but if I go to a house and there is a dog I don't know I will honk and see if the customer will come out to get their package, if not, I scan it "animal interference" and try again the next day. If I know the dogs, I get out and deliver, but that's actually risky to be honest, any dog can bite. Mail carriers on walking routes are at even more of a risk. I have seen some gnarly dog bites, and carriers have even been killed. So I understand why the carrier is doing this, even if it may seem extreme. He would rather be safe than sorry.

I am the owner of the business the guys name is Ed Haller he’s been our mailman for years. The issue begin when he came in the door one day and commented about the dog. Even though for the last several years have been coming in with no issue. To resolve the issue that he was claiming I ask him to deliver to the backyard where the mailboxes are attached instead of walking in the front door of my business and loitering in bothering us anyway. The guy like to come in and tell us about everybody else’s business in the neighborhood which I didn’t want to hear.. So, he was upset that I made him start delivering to the back that he complained to a supervisor that he was afraid of the dog in the backyard might be outside. He now delivers out front from his truck and I walk out the door to get my mail. So I guess we both got what we wanted let’s contact in my mail every day without any bullshit from letter carrier that’s A-hole of the neighborhood. He’s had a lot of complaints. Luckily he’s retiring soon. All the other mail carriers love us. Never an issue with any other ones

Something to consider here, If he is injured he could be fired, the dog owner could get sued and the dog could be euthanized. If a mail carrier is injured on the job they are written up, if they are forced to be on light duty until they heal even when temporary they get treated terribly, if it is permanent and you are unable to do your job you are forced out. I saw this firsthand as a mail carrier, we were given orders if you feel you are in danger do NOT deliver, inform management and it will be dealt with. Safety is a priority.

He would come in and loiter and give me a gossip about other people in the neighborhood which I did not want to hear about I’m a busy entrepreneur. When I asked him to deliver to the back he got upset because of the extra effort every day he would have to do. The carrier is delivering mail by the book. You don't have to like it, but you don't pay his bills. If there are 600 stops on his route, and 44% of those stops had dogs (the national average), how long would it take to get bit if he delivered the mail/parcels to those doors when they are opened? There is no way to answer that, really, but if you look at the picture, it isn't hard to see that doing so would be an unnecessary risk. This is like a guy with a blocked mailbox. He will demand that his mail needs to be delivered regardless. What he doesn't understand is, there are 30 more blocked boxes on the route at any given day. If the carrier stops, parks the truck properly, delivers the mail, gets back in and on to the next, how much time is that adding to his route? Well, it could be enough time that he misses the truck at the end of the night that picks up all the outgoing mail. He cant do that. Its a service for all not me, me, me. In order to ensure the safety of carriers and timely delivery to all, there are rules. It ain't hard to understand.

But one things for sure, customers have turned into dangerous assholes all over the country. I’ve had a knife pulled on me over a ad magazine that everyone gets that the guy didn’t want, carriers get robbed left and right, attacked by people, mauled by dogs because people can’t possibly just put their dog inside because that dog never biting you means he’d never ever bite anyone else. Carriers getting shot while sitting in the mail van, or on someone’s porch because some psycho thinks their carrier is the only person touching that mail from start to finish and they haven’t received it yet so it must be the carriers fault. Carriers getting threatened all the time by customers, literally having to get into fights with people. A lot of us have several bad interactions with the public, I myself have had weapons pulled on me over nothing, threatened over mail that hadn’t came to me yet to even try delivering, yelled at and berated in the middle of the street as I try walking away because some lady thinks her mail should magically go to her new address, someone think it’s okay to open my vehicle door wanting something from me, and been in a fight. Multiple of my friends have had guns pulled on them. So while you may have a shitty carrier because they do exist, there are a lot more shitty customers than carriers and we’re going to be as safe as we can. For some people which might be him, that includes not going to a porch when the customer comes out recording him. And if you think that’s extreme or makes him a pussy or whatever, I’ll point you to the lady that a customer came out on the porch and shot her over his check not being delivered yet.

So the resident can't give the mail carrier a 30 second window to deliver the mail without opening the door? The carrier when confronted, responds "you opened your door." Clearly there is a back story this news reporter left out. USPS sometimes has to establish safety rules at certain delivery points for residents that are too obtuse to understand the situation they've created. If you own a dog, and your dog is coming out of your home or is in the yard charging/ attacking carriers trying to deliver mail or packages to your home, you need to take extra steps to prevent an incident. By the way, carriers can and will personally sue a dog/ animal owner if they get bit while doing their job.

As mailcarriers we are allowed to keep ourselves safe. We do not deliver to backyards… or to open doorways period. Animals protect their homes and see mail carriers as threatening, they bark- we leave- their behavior is reinforced. Thus, they behave differently to us than a regular visitor. It is our safety at issue. I had more than 400 to 600 stops a day to deliver. It’s expediency and we can’t walk to your backyard to deliver to your special box because you rescued a dog. I have a rescue dog at home as well who is feisty- my box is at the street.

I came out the back door and closed it and he turned around and walked away and said because I had opened my door while he was approaching through the driveway that he should not deliver my mail and too bad. He doesn’t record anymore because it’s against your postal regulations and it probably violates by civil rights. He was warned by the post office. Now delivers out front where I greet him at the door and guess what I come out the door and my dogs inside

I cant imagine being a city carrier and having a loose dog try to chase you down while carrying that heavy af satchel. Being rual is one thing with farm dogs and the ability to hide in a vehicle, but being dismounted and lugging around pounds of mail and other stuff on your shoulders all day with the added possibilty of a loose aggravated dog..... i love dogs, but theyre still animals that do animal things. As a carrier, I can tell you many carriers get bitten daily and customers are extremely careless. They will open their door and let dogs out, as the dogs run up on you barking, the customer always yells, “he is friendly”.

This customer did something to PISS this carrier off and carriers really DO have the power to make you go to the post office to get your mail. Don't piss off your mail carriers. You'll learn really fast how much the federal government really does not care about you getting your mail if you have done something to disrupt the process of what it takes to deliver that mail every single day. Video taping a federal employee in uniform can actually get you into trouble. It's also a good way to PISS off your mail carrier.

I am a retired city letter carrier of 35 years. Very early in my career I was delivering mail to a home where the door was open but the screen door was closed. I was new on the route and didn't know there were dogs, while putting mail in the box a dog charged me and busted through the screen door. Thank God I was able to get out of there without a dog bite, but it taught me a valuable lesson about open doors. From what I saw in this video this carrier was going by the book. He's obviously had trouble with this customer before. I would like to see this reporter and customer carry the route for one day, they would probably have a new outlook on the whole situation. This carrier has the authority to suspend delivery even to the whole block if he feels like he's in danger. In many cases the carrier gets in trouble for being bitten by a dog with the USPS because management sees it as a situation that could have been avoided, not in every case mind you but many cases. Also in many cases the USPS will sue the customer for medical bills and comp given to the carrier for being bit. This carrier was not only protecting himself he was also protecting the customer. My hat's off to the mailman for doing the job he's supposed to do and keeping his cool while the media and customers were harassing him.

One can’t move box from original location with out approval by postmaster , two dogs near delivery points are not permitted regardless if you say friendly . If dog attacks for any reason customer liable and can be sued for events and damages that happen .. we just had a female letter carrier attacked while delivering from a open door and that dog had an open door and ran out two houses down biting female letter carrier multiple times . That owner was charged by animal control and sued over 20,000 dollars . Owner was charged for dog off leash and off property, and failure to register dog with city and dog was not update with shots as owner have no records of vet visits over 5 years and carrier had to get rabies shots for 2 weeks series

The mail carrier doesn't have to go around to the back of the house to deliver your mail. He was doing you a courtesy and you STILL opened the door while he was trying to deliver, giving your dog an opportunity to attack.

Stop opening doors to get your deliveries while they are being dropped off. I'm a delivery driver and the amount of times people open the door while I'm walking up to their doors and they have a dog trying to get out is astonishing! Alot of people have no real control over their animals. Please just let the person deliver your stuff and after they've walked away then open your door PLEASE!
