How did you guys get the legal authority to run number plates thru your dispatch?

If it’s on private property, the owners of the vehicle need to register the vehicle with the property, which by condition of being there, is passed onto security for their data base. Things like that are usually done through some kind of contractual agreement between the parties. If not, then there’s the possibility of an authorized partnership with their local police.

If one of your officers reports shots fired on a property and it is a officer related incident do other patrol units respond to assist ?

We would always dispatch the appropriate authorities for a call such as that. A supervisor would respond due to the type of scenario, however, we are far outnumbered by law enforcement and they would be the quickest to respond in a situation such as that and the ones who would handle it. Our personnel assist one another as a call may require, however, responding "code" is not one of our functions, nor that of any private security provider.

Too bad there is no outreach program for the homeless or a shelter system in place. I remember when I was a patrolman in New York City we had a homeless outreach unit we could call and they would take them to a drop-in center for shelter. Lately, in many cities, there is a lacking effort to provide funds for such a program.

The main issue with that is housing laws make it impossible because you aren’t allowed to fit enough people to make a difference

We train at several ranges in both Denver and Colorado Springs currently, depending on the type of training being done (some have different rules than others, so we adjust according to that).

We could only detain until police arrive. Anything performed by our personnel would be considered a "citizen arrest", but still up to the discretion of law enforcement.

Why would a current police officer work patrol for a security company?

Why wouldn't one? Are we beneath them? One, for example, works for a department where he is on 8 days, off 5 days. The security industry is only what one makes of it.

Denver Metro Protective Services the police officers I know that want to work over 40 hours a week, work off duty jobs as police officers making more, sometimes far more, money. Also, they retain their police powers and qualified immunity. I just don’t see why they wouldn’t go where the money was.

@@bigglovebobfizzox2971 For the most part, that is typically the situation. But not always, and we are grateful for those who chose to be a part of our organization and offer their experience. Likewise, for those who are not active, the majority of our Patrol Division have graduated from a POST academy, however, have not landed the LEO position yet. The process so often takes a year or more and we offer much of what one would get in a law enforcement job while waiting to get hired on with a department.

@@Unknown_Ooh You are missing the point - because we utilize many of the same tools, because our personnel receive much of the exact same training (almost all of our Patrol personnel are POST Certified - that means that they are police academy graduates), because we are in vehicles that have markings on them, you have taken the incorrect assumption that we are "wannabes". Why, then, can we not make the same assumption of an EMT wanting to be a doctor? The logic is equivalent, however, to you seems absurd. Regardless of the absurdity, the facts remain the same. You should not make assumptions merely because you see an individual who happens to be doing very many of the exact duties, using similar equipment and having received the exact training as being a "wannabe". Perhaps he is merely an individual who has taken the steps to become a police officer, but has not yet been able to get hired on with the agency he or she desires. And perhaps he/she believes in trying to make a difference in others lives in some manner. How are YOU so much better by being an "EMT" than our personnel as being security guards??? Perhaps we should be laughing at you for ONLY being an EMT and NOT being a doctor!
