This is exactly the video I needed. I've been trying to get speed on the ride with just the wrist, and that wont get you very far. Back to the drumpad for me.

Extremely helpful my man. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. Technique is the hardest part. The ideas are the fun/ inspirational/ creative part.

Wonderful lesson ~ I have been using a chain-drive hi-hat stand which came with the drumset I purchased which is now very squeaky and inner rod +foot pedal have become very tight --all the other stands are PDP. Can you suggest a quality inexpensive hi-hat stand /pedal included (PDP ?). Also what do you prefer for smoother fast action mechanisms concerning hi-hat stand pedals, chain-drive or free floating rod (not sure of proper name for foot pedal rod connection type stand). I play with a light hand and foot but I like a strong, solid bass drum and hi-hat 'chit ' . Learning Jazz usually play Break Beat, Drum&Bass , Hybrid Electronica/Acoustic Drum whatever you would call what Mark Guiliana plays, 'Beat' music -- I am open to suggestions for a hi-hat stand, thanks ~

Love the ride cymbal sound.... and by the way Louie, has anybody except of me ever noticed that your whole body attitude inclusive your face expression is a perfect copy of the young Dave Weckl...??!

As a bass player, let me ask you drummers a question. How many drummers do you hear playing HH and ride just whenever they feel like it? Not what the song is supposed to do. It drives me insane. There's a reason for HH/closed, HH/open, and ride.

Drummers are taught and treated often as if they're a backing instrument that only provides rhythm. I'm self taught, but I've always approached the drums just like guitar or piano. Each drum and cymbal is a different musical note that needs to work within the framework of the guitar. Personally I like to follow the Bonham/Ghrol/hawkins technique of accenting the guitar notes. It's also different styles too, so it's hard to say all drummers that play things at "innopropriate" times might have context that we don't.
