RIDE became one of my top 3 favorite bands of all-time by being borderline shoe gaze but never full-on shoe gaze, changing their sound in later albums but never full-on changing and by having 2 lead singers that I still have trouble deciphering who's singing what (along with the busiest drummer I'd heard since Neil Peart). I saw them in concert for their critically acclaimed album "Nowhere" in an American venue with about 30 people there in total and for their equally amazing follow-up album "Going Blank Again", that same venue was sold out and they were flawless both times. They broke up unexpectedly after the album "Tarantula" and that broke my heart, but in true Ride fashion, they got back together for a 20 year reunion tour and ended up putting out 3 more albums that were godsend for a devoted fan like myself. (BTW my favorite band is and always will be Genesis) Please give Ride another listen and maybe do "Vapour Trail" or "Twisterella", 2 of their big hit singles in the UK and Thank You!

Going Blank Again is one of best albums that came out of the shoegazing era.

One of the greatest shoegaze songs of all time. Ride we’re in the top 3 shoegaze/dream pop bands with My Bloody Valentine and Lush. The album this song came from is a banger and must be heard, it’s awesome! Great song choice!!

Definitely need to check out Lush for Shoegaze, from Gala to Spooky and Split albums. The songs, Deluxe, Superblast! and Desire Lines would be a great introduction for you and Lex.

Ride was the first shoegaze band I heard, and they didn't connect with me until I heard the song "Dreams Burn Down." imo that's the gem in their catalogue.

Yep. Dreams Burn Down is a favorite (all time).

I have only a few shoegaze albums (Loveless, Ride's debut, maybe a couple others). I have to be in a particular mood, but when I am there is nothing like it.

You can get "inside the drone" of the wall of sound, like being weighted down under a pile of brick rubble (if you know what I mean).

Check out their album Weather Diaries. Really excellent.

Glad you liked it. Shoegaze is an acquired taste. For anyone that doesn't know, the name comes from the amount of pedal effects on the guitars, and the guitarists seemingly spending all their time on stage staring at their feet.

starting witht the most epic shoegaze song is a good move, only shallow by my bloody valentine next, sweetness and light by lush, slowvlaki space station by slowdive...

First time listen for me, and I must say I loved it. The style, sound and harmonies are reminiscent of a little known band called Alfa9, their first album anyway. Nick I think you would like that album, their music is very catchy but hypnotic, it reminds me a lot of Pink Floyd in a way. Nick, I'm wondering if this wasn't your cup of tea because there wasn't really a hook? Even though there really wasn't, I thought the bass was really cool, and the repetitive guitars I can get lost in. But then, one of my favorite bands of all time is Godflesh, and while they're old stuff was much heavier, their songs are often long, repetitive and droning but I'm still ready to play them again.

I listened to it again and actually liked it a big more the second time around. I'm guess I get a bit lost without structure. Did a video today of some similar music. I am sure you will dig it

I've always loved that this was the first track. Twisterella, the second track, seems like an easy choice for an opener as something that could appeal to almost anyone, but that wouldn't be leading you into the true magic of this album in my opinion.

Here's my Top 10 artists of all-time: (1) Genesis (2) The Smiths (3) Phil Collins (4) Peter Gabriel (5) The Cure (6) Pink Floyd (7) New Order (8) The Stone Roses (9) RIDE (10) Radiohead #nicknlexrequest RIDE "Vapour Trail" or "Moonlight Medicine" The band is not a group of talented musicians. They create soundscapes, like shoegaze bands do, but they are, to me, more of a rock group. ❤

Hi Nick, I have not heard of this band. I do like the overall music riff, but can't say with so much vocals is working as the entire song. The harmonies would be fine say in a chorus to add to the sound, but not the whole track. It already has a wall of sound, that they need one vocalist to cut through the noise, which it ends up becoming. The fact that I actually like the music, but it's too much. I am well aware I am listening through my computer speakers and u.t....so I would definitely need another track and with one vocalist....also to see is this wall of sound on every track ? That music riff was really good though ! Byee Jim X
@matthewstroud42942 жыл бұрын
The wall-of-sound kings in the genre are My Bloody Valentine. The album Loveless was critically acclaimed and is beloved by shoegaze lovers, but it can be a bit too much. Lots of bands dipped into the shoegaze "thing" and then became more mainstream with their later stuff, like Blur.

No matter how one feels about Ride's direction after GBA - both of those latter-day 90's records sound a lot more vital than Interplay. Much like Slowdive's Everything is Alive it's a tepid and disappointing affair after a too-long gap. Just looking at the cover art is a cue you're going to be underwhelmed...if that's all the effort they put into the artwork you know the songs will be meh.

Ride were a band that I never really took to as a teen in the UK when they came out. I can enjoy what the rhythm section is doing, but have to agree that it is very repetitive. The vocals are weak and the vocal melody is unimaginative. My Bloody Valentine are the best of that genre of bands with some innovative sounds and textures.
