As a Master Pistol Smith who does it for a living, I didn't expect a great deal from the Kimber. Yes, I bought one. It looked nice, it felt good, and I was curious. It has been totally reliable. I too polished the feed ramp. It ran fine without that, but it never hurts. The only deficiency I found was the trigger. There was some grit and creep, and the trigger bow was a bit on the loose side. I addressed those issues (took about 30 minutes) and I have a wonderfully crisp and clean 3.5 lb pull. I've shot it quite a bit since. I still haven't had a malfunction (I am squarely at 900 rounds). I am not ordinarilly a Kimber fan. I won't say this has turned me into one, but I do really like this pistol. With a red dot I hit some pretty small stuff at 25 yards!

I own four Kimber pistols. I bought two of them in 2007, one of them in 2008 and the most recent one in 2021. Each and every time I've pulled the trigger on any and all of them, they've gone bang, with the exception of two defective rounds in the past nearly twenty years that failed to fire despite good primer strikes (not the pistol's fault). Never a jam, ever.

I keep reading about problems with Kimber handguns (mostly anecdotal), but my personal experience has been the opposite. This is my 19th Kimber handgun (including a whole bunch of 1911s from Ultra Carry to full-size, a couple Solos, several Micros, R7 Mako, EVO SP and K6) and, other than having to break in a couple of the 9mm 1911s, I haven't had any issues, even with the Solo. It could be that I've just been lucky, but I would think that if they really had systemic issues, I would have experienced at least one over the years, considering how much I've shot them. But thanks for watching and adding the info.

@007Chancellor, I know Kimber went through a period of QC issues a while back. They also seem to sell more 1911s than most other manufacturers (just my personal observation), so I'd be interested in the percentage of returns based on number sold, not just the raw numbers. That would be a more meaningful indication of problems. Thanks for watching and adding to the discussion.

I am not fond of carrying a pistol with a trigger lighter than 3 pounds, though I have made exceptions. For now, my EDC X9 is relegated to range fun, not daily carry, so I'm okay with that trigger. For @quayshawndameron1349, @joedoolittle9481 and @danielmattera4298, please remember that if you point a weapon-mounted light to get "positive identification", and it turns out that the person doesn't warrant deadly force, you likely have committed a felony by pointing a gun at someone without justification. I know, I know - weapon-mounted lights are what the police use (different mission than ordinary civilian defenders) and its what the tacti-cool folks use, so everyone feels they need one, and of course, that necessitates a rail. I'm not a lawyer, but I did spend 38 years in law enforcement and I have discussed this with may lawyers - prosecutors and defense attorneys - and the consensus is that a citizen should NEVER use a weapon-mounted light to identify the target. Use a high quality hand-held light to make identification (preferably from behind cover) and only use a weapon-mounted light once you have determined that the person needs to be shot. But again, I do thank you for watching the video and adding your thoughts.

The KDS9c is much easier to conceal, in my opinion. (The Dan Wesson DWX Compact is similar in shape to the Kimber, and may even dethrone the KDS9c, if range work goes as I think it will. Tabletop review coming out on June 30, range review to follow.) Thanks for watching.

Any IWB holster recommendations for the Kimber KDS9c?
@RidersRange7 ай бұрын
It may depend on whether you have one without a rail, or with a rail, or an optic with the taller sights. My KDS9c doesn't have a rail and it fits in holsters made for a Commander-size 1911 and my Wilson EDC X9. I'd try Muddy River Tactical to see what they say. They have always been very responsive and they ship very quickly.

But does Kimber use MIM parts? I have had issues in the past with MIM parts going out of spec and requiring tuning. I had a sear break on a Springfield. I modify any pistol with MIM, especially 1911s. I think Kimber copied the Wilson, especially the rail version.
@RidersRange6 ай бұрын
Yes, Kimber uses MIM parts. However, MIM done right is seldom a problem and I haven't had any issues with any parts on any of my Kimbers. As to copying Wilson, there are definite similarities, though the grip contour on the Kimber feels better to me than the more rounded grip on the Wilson. However, my wife (smaller hands) prefers the grip feel of the EDC X9 over the KDS9c. Thanks for watching.

Two weeks ago?? At the NRA convention Kimber was touting an August release, so I was pleasantly surprised to find them on the market the end of July. As to jamming, I've run more than 300 rounds through mine so far with a variety of ammo from 90 grain to 150 grain flat nose without a single jam. I did clean it and lube it well before I took it to the range.

Compare a C2 with the Kimber
@RidersRange2 ай бұрын
I have the C2 and it is fine in its element, but discrete carry isn't where the C2 works best. The blocky grip shape isn't as concealable as the more rounded grip shape of the EDC X9 or the KDS9c.

I admit the Wilson Experior is well made and highly accurate, but not everyone can, or chooses to, afford a Wilson. For those who are more financially frugal, either out of necessity or by choice, the Kimber delivers the same level of performance.

@@RidersRange Great review! Love your reviews btw! The wilson more then likely has better parts as I dont know what kimber uses but the wilson has zero fitting, zero barrel fit and the math on the the sample i seen reviewed just wasn’t good. So realistically, what are you getting for all that extra money? A production gun is still a production gun no matter what name is on the side of it. All my wilsons ran great, especially the x9 and I ran it hard and fast. With that said, i still wouldn’t buy another one unless it was well under 2k. My bul viper comp that’s 3.25 inch barrel runs circles around the x9 and its over 1k cheaper. 😂
@RidersRange Жыл бұрын
@tjc501, thanks for adding the info. I wouldn't pay $3K for an EDC X9, but I was happy to buy a gently pre-owned one a couple years ago for $2K. Kimbers in general are true "production" guns - more CNC, less hand fit - while Wilsons are a cross between production and semi-custom. Kimber uses some MIM parts, but I don't believe Wilson does, though there's nothing wrong with good MIM.

First 3 mins of this video and I can see the sharp edges, unsmooth action, and not so good finish. I would LOVE someone to come in and top Wilson at this price, but jeeeez there's so much left on the table and Kimber continues to confuse us with their weird design touches. None of what they're doing is good looking - just make the classic lines and checkering to a double stack. It would look so much more classic. Take more time and round those sharp edges and they'd still be 60% of the cost.
@RidersRange Жыл бұрын
I don't know what it would cost to melt the edges and hand fit the action, but I have to bet it would bring the price up a whole bunch. And yes, Kimber does generally seem to go by the philosophy that "an ounce of image is worth a pound of performance", but in this case, the performance is there, even though the refinement isn't up to Wilson, or even Dan Wesson, standards. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Kinda like Ford vs Lincoln. Lincolns are up-scale Fords with more features and attention to detail for a lot more money. With Wilson you are paying for that attention to detail and hand fitting, which is lacking on the Kimber. But so far, both are 100% reliable and equally accurate. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@rayturano40895 ай бұрын
Identical?Wilson is all forged parts and hand fit. Mimber is cheap MIM internals. I own an edcx9 and have owned a MIMber cdp 1911. The Kimber was the worst pistol I’ve ever owned. The slide stop and thumb safety, both MIM broke within 500 rounds. I sold it and never looked back. I’d never buy another Kimber.
@RidersRange5 ай бұрын
I don't believe I ever said the KDS9c was "identical" to the EDC X9, though they are very similar in form and function. Yes, the Wilson is better made, much like a Lexus is a "better" Toyota. But not everyone is willing or able to buy a Lexus, just like not everyone is willing or able to buy a Wilson. And both the EDX X9 and KDS9c are accurate and will serve the needs of most folks. Thanks for watching. And by the way, I'm not a Kimber "fan-boy", but I have several Kimber pistols, some with several thousand rounds through them, and I've never had a MIM part break.

For the money, as long as you get a reliable one. I’d go with the Kimber and just change out the bs mim parts for machined ones. Would still be cheaper than the Wilson. MIM parts work fine and don’t magically break like people say as they get through hardened but they still annoy me on 1911’s only. I still swap them out despite this being unnecessary.
