RE the front end dive on the Speed Twin, why not fit some progressive front fork springs from TEC Bike Parts, they reduce the front end dive dramatically, and their adjustable piggy back rear shocks are very good, and an economical alternative to Ohlins.

I bought and own one of the first Thruxton Rs in the U.S. and experimented with different mechanical and cosmetic mods. I have dyno'd the bike at least 4 times for various mods. I have installed a Power Commander 5, different gearing, several different air filter systems, two different x pipes and two exhaust systems, Triumph quarter fairing, full fairing, Corbin seat, Tec bike cam, DNKtune, 3 different front sprockets 16, 17, 18, and 3 different rear sprockets 42, 40, 37 etc. I have drag raced it for over 5 years and done land speed racing for the same period of it. I agree with you general comments that the bikes are close on handling and comfort with the Thruxton R having an edge when pushing it in the corners and the Speed Twin having the edge on comfort when comes to 200 mile days. The engines are equal but I think in acceleration contest a stock Speed Twin would be a hair quicker in the quarter mile with the same rider. The Thruxton R would be a hair faster on top. You can get an additional 15 horsepower with either engine and increase the torque from 3500 to 7500 rpm with Tec bike 303 cam, DNKtune, Meerkat x and exhaust, and sprint pod filters.

Great vid! I also have a speed twin and was so indecisive when deciding to get the thruxton r vs the speed twin. For me I was worried at slow speeds on the thruxton r and how my lower back and wrists would feel. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to test ride it long enough to know. Thus, I was admired to it immensely. But ultimately at my age, I decided that the speed twin was going to be safer as far as comfort. Now, that I’ve been riding my speed twin, I do notice that “drop” feel you were referring to and although my lower back was okay, my wrists weren’t too happy. That relic'd look is da bomb. It was uber popular in guitars for a while, but never seen anyone do a bike like that. Bravo! The lower handlebars on the Thruxtons are fine when you're riding twisty roads, but the hunched over thing gets a little tiresome on the straight bits. I'm only 5'7" so if you're taller with longer arms it may not be a problem. I put handlebars on my Thruxton that sits it up almost identically to a Speed Twin. Got a little throttle lock for it too. Much easier on my upper body on long rides now. I have a bad leg from an encounter with a deer and it doesn't enjoy being bent up for long though. Bought a Bonnie peg that drops the right one about an inch. Haven't put it on yet. That's the wonderful thing about parts bin bikes like the Classics. You have an array of choices to fit your needs at reasonable prices.

I have a standard Thruxton and my brother has a Speed Twin. We live in the Philippines where big biking is still a relatively new experience for a lot of riders but thankfully we've been at this game for almost 3 decades. Honestly, we know the Thruxton R is a great bike with the suspension components and even bought rear shocks for that benefit, and our roads are quite bad out here so it highlights the worst of the bad roads we have. But the standard Thruxton with the RWU forks is quite good. I have them lowered about 30mm through the triple clamps and my bars set almost the same drop and they feel really good. You should try bigger discs, a proper full system exhaust, air intake mods and good tires. Pretty sure they'll transform how your speed twin feels✌🏼

@VanBlamm
@VanBlamm 3 жыл бұрын
I see a fair amount of Speed Twins in various parts of the US, but they are certainly outnumbered by the other Bonnies. I was sure Triumph would do a Speed Twin R after a year or two, figuring maybe it needed extra time for development, or they just wanted to build anticipation. But now at this point you are right to question whether there will be one at all, and if that means the Speed Twin in general is not long for this world. Be a shame if they axed it.

Tested a Thruxton R myself before buying the Speed Twin; differences for me? I'd agree the Thruxton R was a bit more 'solid' in corners, but only really noticeable if said corner wasn't smooth - I'm a decent rider, but not a track-hound who could sniff any major difference, though I bet it would turn up if I did track days more often. I did feel my Speed Twin is 'quicker' - it seems to rev up faster and pull a tad better, which would be borne out by the fact it weighs less and has a lighter crank... again, a small difference, and one that would be negated if I was pitted against a better rider than I am. I think the choice mostly comes down to aesthetics, practicality, and whether or not you track your ride; both Triumphs can do all these things, but each is slightly better in certain areas. I think the Thruxton wins the beauty contest, but I think the Speed Twin is the more useable ride, especially over distances, and let's not forget that it also costs significantly less. In the end, that's why I went with the Speed Twin - it's a sharp looker, and basically performs on-par with the Thruxton R, but for a lot less dosh... if you took the difference in price between the two rides, and threw it at performance parts for the Speed Twin, it'd blow the Thruxton's doors off.

@@VanBlamm Aye, I weighed them heavily. My heart said Thruxton, but I'm a short Irishman - the comparably far-forward lean on the Thruxton meant getting my foot down at stop was awkward, and I'd rather not live in fear of city riding, much as I tend to spend most of my time at higher-speeds on winding country roads. I think it's hard to set a foot wrong with Triumph's modern classics, really; they're proven reliable, and while something like a Royal Enfield may look the part, it just doesn't quite measure up. If you're looking for performance parts, by the way, check out classicbike-raisch.de - they offer a lot of 'kits' with ECU tunes, camshafts, etc. for the water-cooled Triumphs and ship globally (you also don't have to pay the VAT tax if you're outside Europe, so you get a 'discount' off the listed price in your cart at check-out); you can spend less than the difference between a Speed Twin and Thruxton and turn yours into a real monster if you want to. Cheers.

Thruxton R's are bad ass bikes. I still think I prefer the Speed Twin though. I prefer the standard wheels over the spoked wheels. It's too bad Triumph doesn't offer a tubeless spoked wheel like you can get on some of the R9T's. I also think I'd prefer the more upright riding position of the Speed Twin, and I actually think the Speed Twin looks better, although it's close because those Thruxton's look bad a$$. I' still am absolutely AMAZED that Triumph has not done a Speed Twin R with upgraded suspension and brakes !?!??!

Both are awesome bikes, that's for sure. I agree about the wheels; living tube-free definitely factored into my decision.

I have never tried tubeless tyres (I have an old machine)... but where can you put the Metzeler Racetec RR tires to the limit? Only on track days and if you are a real pro...and real pros don't go for Thruuxtons... they do sport bikes. And BMW has a Pattent over those, they bought the company that invented it, but putting the spoke ends in a different place... nobody can copy it... (if thee patent is still valid)
@VanBlamm
@VanBlamm 3 жыл бұрын
I think the most recent V-Strom 650XT has tubeless spoked wheels, but don't quote me on that. I agree with you about the serious performance riders being far more likely to opt for something like an S1000 than a Bonneville. I even said something to that effect for this video, but I cut it out because I think people should get whatever bike makes them happy even if it's not the most sensible choice for their intended usage.

Worked with my local shop and had them pull the Diablos when they were done. Took the wheels home, taped them up and put new valve stems in them. Took them back and got the Angels mounted (Diablos are great but for every day riding the Angel GTs are just fine and wear better). Overall I'm pleased. I dropped about 3 pounds in tube weight. However, the rear isn't perfectly sealed up and I have to air up about once a month. And I LOVE the spoked wheels. So classy.

@JF-lt5zc
@JF-lt5zc 3 жыл бұрын
Easy solution for you: buy a Thruxton R and put higher risers or a flat bar conversion. :) I have a '16 and I love it. There are two things that needs improvement to me: Bar position. I spent decades on super sports and find the position on the TTR comfortable, but it puts too much pressure on my already bad back when riding around town and hitting bumps and such. I plan on getting the fairing kit and am looking forward to the lower clip-ons to relieve some of that pressure. It sounds counterintuitive, but a more forward position puts less strain on the back and more on the wrists, and I'm OK with that trade off. The 2nd is the spring rate on the rear shocks. On my model year, it is too high. Ideally I want it in the middle of the preload range so I can adjust up or down depending on whether I am riding with a pillion or doing more spirited rides, or just riding around town where I don't want the high performance position. I have to say, though, I don't care for the mods on the viewers bike. Too much IMHO. However, the exhaust looks fantastic. Pull the cat out of there and it will really sound the business. On the TTRs, the stock exhaust is sufficient as it is pretty much an empty tube. Pull the cat out with those British Customs and that thing will scream - but only on throttle! I don't know why, but these bikes are SO quiet when they are idling. Shiny side up.
@Dansk55
@Dansk55 2 жыл бұрын
I was thinking of doing this. How is the riding position now with bar conversion? What brand? Also, is the seat position good because I did this with my zx10r and even though my riding position is better, the seating position is awkward as the front portion of the seat is lower so I keep sliding down to the tank.

Great vid! I was lucky enough to take ownership of a Breitling edition Speed Twin last year and it seems to have some of the performance upgrades of the Thruxton R - Brembo M50 radial calipers and Ohlins rear shocks. The forks aren't adjustable, although I don't need them to be - no complaints about the handling (I'm 80kg). My 2019 Bobber, which I traded for the ST, had a Motone x-pipe and Motone Saturn V pipes and it sounded AMAZING. I can't say I noticed any performance benefit though, but there was a noticable reduction in engine braking. The ST would definitely benefit from louder pipes, but only for the sound - I don't need any more performance. You're welcome to take my ST for a spin if you're ever in Manchester (the one in England!).

At least nobody sold your kidneys. :) ... Was expecting more diferences between them, specially on the riding position department. Now that I see the clipons on the THrux, they have a swipe up format... they are not "horizontal" from under the triple clamp, so that is why they are clipons but with a relaxed/sporty stance... By the way, one of these will be my next, if I ever plan to sell my W. But I guess you are right... changes between the regular Thruxton(discontinued)/Speedtwin, the Thruxton R and now the Thruxston RS can only bee really important to track days or very very very professional riders... About the Speedtwin R not existing... I hate conspiracy theories... but... One thing one Triumph seller told me once, the only thruxton that enjoyed success here in PT was the R version. The if you-are-going-to-spend-that-kind-of-money-buy-the-best mentality might have dictated that a lot of Thruxtons (SansR) were reconditioned/redirected in factory to speedtwin format. If I even remember correctly, speedtwin was introduced almost a year or two later than the t100, t120 and thruxtons. That is probably why triumph is not pushing a R yet... lots of spare parts still in storage.
@VanBlamm
@VanBlamm 4 жыл бұрын
That is a very interesting theory! Probably wouldn't be the first time a bike manufacturer has created a new model just to offload less-desirable parts. If it's true, I wonder if that means we'll get a Speed Twin R after they run out of base model parts?
4 жыл бұрын
@@VanBlamm well...it will have to have a update somewhere along the way... The issue is the price difference... having a speed twin R will put it in the same ball park as the thrux... 16k instead of 13 (here in PT)... Maybe, just maybe, it will sell more in that format :)... Again... Who spends 13 for their dream machine might spend the extra dola to have the best.

The Thruxton R is set up way too hard out of the box and you cannot adjust it adequately to make it compliant on anything but the smoothest roads (for riders of average weight). I needed to have mine re-shimmed and revalved etc. Many have complained of the same thing on the forums. Inexcusable Triumph. It isn’t a proper sports bike so should ride like a road bike not a race bike. To have the higher quality bits and not be able to adjust a decent complaint ride into the thing is a joke. No doubt the Speed Twin doesn’t suffer from this problem.

Here's the thing; if Triumph offered a Speed Twin R with all the goodies, SIGNIFICANTLY less people would buy the Thruxton R. I'm amazed that the Twin is as close to a Thruxton as it is with that smaller price tag.

Now that the Thruxton is officially getting discontinued, I wonder if the door has been opened for a proper Speed Twin R

Fine after only a 30-minute ride. I'm sure the difference would be more apparent at the end of a long day.

You commented about taking that turn and the Thruxton R felt more planted. Your Speed Twin is riding on Tubeless Tires and lighter weight wheels, while the Thruxton R is on a heavier spoke wheel with Tube tires. That alone eats up some of the benefit of the “overspeced” suspension and ride quality. Not sure why Triumph can’t copy BMW with a tubeless spoke wheel. If Triumph made a Speed Twin R or RS with that RS motor, put on Ohlins rear shocks and Ohlins NIX cartridges, it would out class the Thruxton R for less money. Triumph will not undercut their premium Bonneville Model. I have gone round and round with the Speed Twin, Thruxton R and Thruxton RS, and can’t justify the premium cost for a bike made in Thailand. I’ll probably regret it, as I love the Thruxton looks, but I’m going with a 2021 Kawasaki z900rs cafe, made in Japan, and will save $4,300 over the Thruxton RS. I will use that for the S&S Big Bore Kit on my 2019 Royal Enfield Conti GT 650. It least I can still scratch that cafe race 1960’s look itch. Safe riding

Maybe... but I think you can bet whatever you want, that it would be put on sale for the same price as thrux RS... Off course it would be a special edition, with the same fit and finish (i.e no more plastic brake lever containers) or even better as a speed twin TFC. It would be a premium Street twin. Remember that Street Twin has almost the same price as of the Original Thruxton (without R or RS that is no longer sold). so they would have price parity.

João P Carvalhinho You are correct, and I simply can't play the waiting game for an overpriced bike. I did that with Harley for years

I agree that the Triumph value equation is not great. I actually would have bought a Z900RS if I hadn't come across such a good deal on my Speed Twin. I test rode a Z900RS Cafe later on and loved it, although I've definitely been spoiled by all this torque.

@@VanBlamm once tried the z900 but did not like the way the tank looks from the rider position... Is too round and wide. Prefer the triumphs alongside look... But if I was a rich man....lá lalalallalallalala... There is a chanel by a japanese dude (filippo Rider)... He doesn't speak much... Or any but rides them all, and in Tokyo.

You do your Kawa excursion, you’ll lose money on it and you will be bored within a year. Then you’ll come back to Triumph. Your comparison to Harley prices is a little unfair. Triumph and Harley are not at all in the same league...

Gee, wouldn't it have been great if we could've gotten some shots of the actual bike instead of some random close-ups that we have to piece together in our minds. It's not as though people care about what the thing looks like 🙄
