This is the fifth and final day of my road trip through western Colorado aboard my 2019 Triumph Speed Twin. I didn’t have any stops or sightseeing planned, so I figured this would be a good time to lay down my thoughts on how the Speed Twin fares as a touring bike. It doesn’t suck nearly as badly as you might think!

Totally agree with you about the need for rest days, otherwise it becomes more and more about endurance and sucks all the enjoyment out of it and speaking for myself I get very irritable. So stop over somewhere interesting. And sometimes its liberating to just ride without the cameras so much more liberating and enjoyable.

I LOVE my T120. It's way fun, as fast as I want to go on the street (and that's coming from a trackday CBR600RR rider). I can usually pass anyone in the twisties, yet it's comfortable enough for touring.

Great video series and trip summary. I love the insight into what it took to make these videos. I often find myself wondering about the logistics that goes into videos like this, so it's great to hear the candid feedback on what you went through. I find myself doing the same thing when I visit new and exciting places, in regards to wanting to make frequent stops in the beginning and running out of energy later on. I guess, for me at least, there is a fear that I'm going to miss out on something I may not have a chance to see again, or that the views from later on won't be as good as something I may have passed up. Anyways, stay safe!

Thanks for sharing your experience. I use the same saddlebags on my BMW S1000RR, they were the only solution that you can fit easily on this bike. But it's true, they look pretty ugly when extended. For Triumph I've seen some pretty neat retro looking leather saddle bags.

I wouldn't worry too much about what your Speed Twin looks like with luggage. I think that bike would look awesome even if you stuck a big a$$ Givi trunk on the back of it LOL. That bike just oozes style, and those SW bags look pretty good especially when you consider how convenient they are. Trust me, I can't think of any other sport or adventure touring bikes out there that look as good as that bike does in your photos. Please please please, keep that bike, and do more touring on it. It has got to be one of my favorite bikes right now, and you are one helluva an ambassador for them!

I can relate when you say those types of roads are "ok" on the speed twin and the crosswinds can tire you out BUT...I LOVE THIS BIKE!...I bought it mainly because of it's character and that's why I think we ride motorcycles, it's the connection between the rider and the motorcycle and must say this bike will make you fall in-love with it very quickly...Appreciated all your efforts to get us good content bro, stay blessed!

Thanks Van Blamm - great film. I’ve done a few long trips on my Speedy - it might not munch the miles like a big tourer but you’re travelling in style! I use the Kriega US bags 1x30L and 2x20L they work great on the Speed Twin and look quite cool. Keep going!
@VanBlamm
@VanBlamm 3 жыл бұрын
I would love to see what that setup looks like! I used to use a 30L Kriega on my last two bikes (TU250X w/ luggage rack, and Street Twin w/ pillion handrail) but found that I could not attach it to the Speed Twin. Seemed like the rear seat was just a smidge too small, and there wasn't enough subframe to which to secure the tie-downs. Do you have one of the luggage racks that sticks out over the fender?
@julianperry5141
@julianperry5141 Жыл бұрын
@@VanBlamm I use the Krieger bags fine on mine. There is enough subframe to attach the loop straps. I find I put a 20 or 30l bag sideways and stack a 10 on top. Gives me plenty of room on the seat. I've strapped the 20 length ways and 2 x 10l to the sides and the seat is a little cramped, but you could then I am 5,11 and 220. Its a damn fun tourer

Just a couple things, minor or significant, you be the judge. I found that on my scrambler 1200XC which is the same engine as the speed twin doesn’t start as easily. There’s a big diff between the 87, and the 93 octane when it comes to starting it. Once it starts I don’t notice any difference. The other is the cruise control, not a must have feature but it does come in handy if you need to use your right hand for scratching, or adjusting your clothes, or moving something on the bike. My right hand falls asleep and gets numb so I set it for a few minutes to wake it up. Btw…..the scenery you show is pretty amazing, so for your viewers it’s worth it. You might want to cut 50% out and just sit there and enjoy it yourself and save some energy. The part where you set the camera down and drive past it, go back, pick it up, and move on can be cut out to save time and energy. Ok more than a couple things. Cheers !
@VanBlamm
@VanBlamm 2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment! I have since switched to using only 91+ octane fuel. Now that the exhaust and tune are done, I definitely don't want to run too low of a grade.
@ginoasci2876
@ginoasci2876 2 ай бұрын
@@VanBlamm : the octane matters depending on how it starts, and runs. Manufacturers design their products to operate on 87 octane for the most part. You do have exceptions like high performance engines. Not sure your modifications warrant a higher octane but if it runs good, that’s what counts.

🇵🇹🇺🇸✌🏼😎 There's a lot of bikers V-blogging, but only a few matching it with well thought-of contents worth our time and attention... like you do brother! ✊🏼 I can relate to what you say, and we do think alike: I'm currently riding a 2019 Street Twin, following on your footsteps - the reason I became one of your 1.180 subscribers ( 🤩 uau! congrats! 🙌🏼) I'm thinking about Bike upgrading in 2021, but my heart is not yet settled between its bigger sister, the Speed Twin, or a Tiger 900 GT It's true one easily find the Street Twin's limits soon enough, but most of the time I think the rider's limits kick in way before the bike itself starts feeling short... I too enjoy getting 'lost' in twisty b-roads enjoying the scenery, and eventually heading back home on those boring high-way stretches... Considering it's biggest limitation is comfort while riding above 75Mph, I'm having a go on a DART Fly-screen next week... I believe it will make a noticeable difference, without injuring the classic look of the bike too much ( see: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYC8daGknKyCbcU ) Luggage wise, I use TRIUMPH's leather pannier - currently only the right-side one ( instagram.com/p/CH1LInNF70p/ ) a pillion-seat net and occasionally the Triumph's backpack (don't you find carrying extra weight on you back becomes even more tiresome? I do. I avoid the backpack, but I see you often use it) Since i'm committing to longer rides and longer trips each time, I struggle to decide if the Speed Twin would be my best next saddle (do I really need the extra CC's & HP on a naked format?) or should I consider the Triple engine on the road-oriented TIGER 900 GT, with improved comfort not only on b-roads but also on boring highways? Food for thought... food for thought. On looks alone, I'd go for the SPEED TWIN without blinking 😍😘 I DO LOVE OUR BONNIES ! Stay safe, take care, have fun, keep on riding and sharing, please Strong hugs from PORTUGAL ! 🇵🇹🇺🇸✌🏼😎

Sounds like a real dilemma! I guess it depends on just how much high-speed highway riding you plan to do. My Speed Twin spends about 30% of the time on the freeway, but rarely for more than two or three hours of it per day, and for that I think it's fine. Even more so if the Dart screen helps you with comfort. But if you want to cover really big distances (think 600km per day on a regular basis) then you might be better served with the Tiger. I haven't ridden it but I have no doubt it's fantastic. That said, there is no substitute for the charisma of a Bonneville... As for the backpack, it's nice being able to fit all of my camera and drone stuff in one bag, but if it were any heavier it would definitely get tiresome. And thank you for the kind words! Ride safe ✌️

Thanks for your video(s), really nice footage! And I totally agree with your maximum of 350 miles per day. Unfortunatly my speed twin takes a winter sleep, but thats the perfect time for some modifications ;) I really want to go to Copenhagen and Zeeland next year (maybe with a pillion and hopefully vaccinated) but I haven‘t found the right luggage yet and using only a backpack is quite „challenging“ in multiple ways😅 To you and all subscribers stay safe and healthy ✌️
@VanBlamm
@VanBlamm 3 жыл бұрын
If you're planning on taking a pillion, then consider an upgraded adjustable rear suspension as one of your winter mods. The stock suspension is fine for just me, but gets much worse the more weight is on it. As for luggage, my SW-Motech bags actually leave the pillion pegs useable, so that's an option. Have a safe holiday, and thanks for watching!

The average joe blow KZbin viewer watching these videos doesn't realize all that's involved in not only filming these trips, but then also editing a video to make it worthy of people watching. I remember a few years ago I took a trip in my little Miata (car) and I was trying to do some videoing of the mountain roads with my GoPro. What a giant pain in the ass it was, and it really sort of interrupted my enjoyment of the trip itself. Then when I got home, I had a yit ton of video that I had to go through and try to see what was worth using and what was useless. Needless to say, I never really did much with any of that video because I got busy with life and it fell by the wayside. Props to the guys/gals that actually film this stuff, then actually put up on KZbin something that is worth watching!

Thx for all this footage, loved it and found it really useful. My dilemma 2 years ago was a choice between the T120 or the Tiger 800 xrt. (Nice problem to have) I went for the Tiger and have really enjoyed the Alps and more local (UK) trips on it. The sacrifice was the looks and character of the Bonnie twin, but I wasn't sure how well it would manage touring. Following your vlog I'm now completely convinced I NEED the speed twin as it s the single most desirable bike for me, and it can do as much touring as I would want to. A windshield will help reduce fatigue. Build up stamina slowly. You can easily do 500 miles in a day out west. I drive annually from Smokies to Arizona, about 4,000 miles, over 8 days, and do about 800 a day. Ok, on a Goldwing. But on my 2013 Bonneville, I did about 500 a day. I chose April or September, and generally drive for 14 hours each day. There is no greater sense of peace than when you know it’s just you and the road all day, each day, for the next week.

About 500 is my limit for a single day on the Speed Twin nowadays. Maybe 400 if I'm doing consecutive days. Might go +1 on the front sprocket to increase my daily fatigue range; if the bike is working hard, it feels like I am too

I have a Thruxton and the other bolt you may want to keep an eye on is the one securing the shifter. Had mine fall out going around a corner. Got about half a mile up the road when I discovered the shifter had disappeared. Parked the bike, walked back and found the bolt laying in the road. The shifter was dangling by its lever. Fortunately, I have the Triumph bags and always carry a metric set of allen keys on a gripper in one. Could have been a bad day as I was out in the middle of BFE when it happened.
@VanBlamm

I believe there was a recall for the Speed Twin regarding that bolt (possibly a recall for the Thruxton as well). My bike's VIN didn't make the list; Triumph had started Locktiting them at the factory by the time it was manufactured. I still check it from time to time though.

I do adventure ride on 1200GSA then I switch to a 125cc due I am riding solo these days. It’s a big difference between the 1200 and the 125 speed and luggage wise. But I did learn to minimise the stuff that I bring on a trip. Last year I replace my GSA LC with the Speed Twin, but maintain to own the 125 for solos. I had to cancelled my 2 weeks solo ride to Thailand and Laos from Kuala Lumpur due to the pandemic lockdown. Planning a short 1 week ride all over Peninsular Malaysia contemplating to either doing it on the 125 or the Speed Twin. On either bike I’ll be using a 40 litre dry bag and probably a tank bag for important documents and equipments. Do you use a luggage rack like the Hepco & Becker or the Tec Bike Parts? Because the soft luggage that you use do looks ugly.
@VanBlamm
@VanBlamm 3 жыл бұрын
That sounds like it'll be an awesome ride on either bike! I don't use a luggage rack because I just don't like the way they look with the Speed Twin's short tail. That's what I like most about my SW-Motech Blaze bags, they don't leave behind a bracket or rack when I'm not using them. I do most of my riding without luggage, so I don't mind that they don't look very good.

Thank you! Hard to say. Both states have amazing scenery and roads, although things in Montana are a bit more spread out. The mountains in Colorado are more densely-packed; you can ride twisty high-altitude roads all day long without ever touching a freeway. However, CO is far more crowded. Weekend rides are a competition to see who can get out the earliest. In MT there's enough frontier magic for everyone to enjoy.

@VanBlamm
@VanBlamm 3 жыл бұрын
Great question! I have actually been carrying a passenger a little more often lately. The bike certainly has enough torque for it, I'll say that. The rear shocks are the weak point when you add the weight of a pillion and/or luggage; the bike's handling becomes extremely squishy and wallowy. It's manageable, but I'm about to upgrade my shocks to nicer ones I can adjust more easily (the factory shocks have adjustable preload, but I cannot get the ring to turn!). The other challenge is finding a luggage system that leaves sufficient room for your passenger's legs. Thanks for the question, and I'll be sure to cover this in a video later this spring.

@@maudwhitbybarry I actually used to always use a 30L Kriega tail bag on my previous bikes, but I couldn't figure out a way to mount it securely to the Speed Twin. The pillion seat is just a little bit too small for a bag that size, and the shorter rear subframe means there aren't enough well-positioned tie-down points. Loved that Kriega bag though. I think I'm a little too harsh on the SW-Motech panniers in this video; I do really enjoy using them and they've functioned very well over about 1500 miles of travel so far.

No Problem at all Tony even @ 65 - 70 MPH on the freeways . City conditions and twisties, the motorcycle works like magic and pure fun . Since you get the wind buffeting evenly it's not that bad at all . Don't put smaller wind screen cause they tend to regulate the wind directly to either your chest or helmet . So if you are planning to put one, install a full fairing though the handsome looks of the M/C will certainly change .

Did you suffer range anxiety or difficulty because of the smallish tank? Also, how do you think it might compare to a Speedmaster for touring the American west?
@VanBlamm
@VanBlamm 3 жыл бұрын
Funny you mention that, I just experienced range anxiety with the Speed Twin for the very first time today. I left Arco, ID with an indicated 40 miles of range left, thinking I could hypermile it to the next gas, at Idaho Falls. About 15 miles in I changed my mind and turned back for Arco, but hit a headwind so strong that my range dropped to 0 by the time I made it back to the last gas station I'd passed. I ended up putting in 3.2 gallons, meaning I actually had about 25 more miles of fuel. I typically get a safe 150-180 miles out of each tank when touring, which is plenty for my routes and riding style. I usually end up refueling 2 or 3 times per day. I think the Speedmaster would have a more comfortable seating posture and better luggage capacity, but the suspension probably isn't as comfortable.

Love the idea of more things being within your reach than you thought. I use the same saddlebags as a commuter on my Street Twin. I've never checked that back bolt so I will. That drone looks very cool. What is it? Also, you live in DC ? but somehow you are in Colorado with the bike. How did you get the Twin there? Did you ride across country or tow? Did not know there was a website that'll tell you the size of bolts on your bike. That is priceless. My mile limit is closer to 160 per day. I'm old though. But after this pandemic is under control I'd love to take my Twin out and go to more interesting places than just to work and these videos give me encouragement. Nice advice to stop closer to the top to reserve energy for the best of the trip. Thank you. I do notice those fly-by shots and whenever someone on a bike does them I think, that's a lot of work. Hmm, it seems that you would get more out of your trips by bringing a really big nvme SSD in a USB 3.0 case and just pushing everything off the cameras and on to the SSD - and then organizing it at the end of the trip. I don't know how many cameras you have on your bike and how many SD cards you need to dump on the SSD, but if you can do all of these concurrently - that would get you squared away way before 10 pm.
@VanBlamm
@VanBlamm 3 жыл бұрын

@zibingotaeam3716
@zibingotaeam3716 3 жыл бұрын
@@VanBlamm Just build your own. You need an nvme SSD in M.2 format for internal use and a case. Samsung tends to be the best in comparisons barring a few very expensive WD options. Then pick a USB Type C case you like, drop the SSD in and you're good to go. Connect the SSD to a Type C port on a laptop and speeds will be higher than a Type C to type A cable. The big limiter for you will definitely be SD card transfer speeds. You may also get away with a SATA3 M.2 SSD, I'm not entirely sure how much faster an nvme drive is through USB 3.0, but the price difference is not that large. If you're on a really tight budget, just opt for a slower SATA3 SSD from a generic manufacturer like WD and a correspondingly slower case. I have a 15€ case from amazon and a 30€ 120 gb WD Sata3 m.2 format SSD that i use for computer backups. M.2 notes the physical format of the drive, opposed to the older 5.25" and 3.something" drives that are more bulky. SATA is a bandwidth standard. nvme is newer and is significantly faster than SATA3. You can find any kind of case from a 70€ billet aluminum one that is IP67 certified to clear plastic ones where you're practically only paying for the logic chip that makes SSD talk to the computer. How much data do you scroll per day? Maybe a 3.5" SSD and a USB to SATA cable will be a more economical option for you, depending on how much room you're willing to sacrifice for this. M.2 SSDs are overgrown USB flash drives, while 3.5" drives are roughly smartphones, but tend to be cheaper and slower, as you can only get them in SATA3. If you create 40-50gb a day, an M.2 might be a good option. If you create 100s of gbs a day for ten days straight, a single m.2 will not be cheap. 3.5" SSDs might be a better option for you.

I'd like my Speed Twin a lot more for touring if it just did a few things better. First.....I'd really like for the oil to stay inside the engine. Not sure why this is so difficult for the dealer to make happen but it is. Second.....it would be great if it didn't switch riding modes every time I start it. I think that kind aligns with my third thing.....I'd really like it if the clock and trip odometers didn't reset to zero every time I start the bike. The last and most important thing I'd like from my Speed Twin......it would be great if the suspension would actually absorb a bump once in a while. I know....I should upgrade the rear shocks to Ohlins but I haven't yet. Trying to sell the bike first but no takers yet. Enjoyed watching your video though and I share your thoughts on the luggage. I have the same bags and find them very functional although somewhat unattractive. I do like that with the bags off, the remaining mounting bracket is almost unnoticeable.
