I've been riding for almost 40 years and pretty much have always rode solo for the exact reasons you've described. I can count on one hand how many times I've riden in a group setting. Riding to me is a sacred thing, just you, your thoughts and the road. I recently bought an adventure bike and am planning a solo ride to Alaska next July from Bakersfield, CA to Deadhorse, AK and back. People I've told about the ride I'm planning are awestruck that I'm doing a ride of this magnitude solo, I say why not! These kinds of people will never know the things we know or experience when we are on the road, the sense of peace, the sheer joy and elation that we feel when we travel to those far off places and meet new people. My motorcycle is for me what wings are to a bird, it is the very thing that allows my soul to fly free. Who needs therapy when you have a motorcycle...lol

Man, this vid really hit home. I've traveled by myself (loved it - stopped when I wanted, rode longer when I wanted, whatever), rode with groups (I'm a mechanic and carry tools, so usually ride tail, but get left behind at gas stops and have to cram down my food at meals to keep up with the front guys) and rode with a good buddy (who turned out to be a cheap, whiny bitch who had to have his beauty sleep instead of getting up to ride during the cool part of the day). Last, I rode with my wife, and that is WAAAYYY cool except her scoliosis ends up making her miserable. So, I'm really happy with my best choice - solo riding. Thanks for the video - I really enjoyed it. BTW - my bike mileage is rapidly approaching 500K, but my body is running out of warranty, but each of your videos either confirms my thinking, or gives me some new info. Love it little brother.

I love riding alone. My current favorite scenic overlook is on the Cherohala Skyway and I'll never pass it up. I'll have my thermos of coffee and what seems like the world to myself. You described it as spiritual and I would concur. It's just something you'll know when it happens.

100% advocate riding solo; Been riding since 1972. I rode a "poker run" in a group, once (!) lots of harleys; I like a full lanes width to give room to avoid road hazards and offer an "escape route". No matter what I did to give myself space somebody , made it a point to "fill in" and slide right up next to me cutting "my" lane in half (loud exhausts and all)..Never again.

Just retired at 50, my first real big ride was from AZ to AK and back. Solo. I took a month and a half. I can either go by myself, or not go with someone else. Solitude is good for the soul. Spending time alone riding through some of the most beautiful places on this planet just can't be beat. You will also be more approachable and open to meeting and interacting with far more people when you are by yourself, and not just talking only to the other people in your group.

I’ve always been mostly a solo rider, used to ride weekends with a really good buddy until he had a crash and gave up riding. Recently I took a 12 day trip with a friend I met through a local bike club. As it turned out he was all about being on the bike as long as possible and just riding fast. When we did stop to see the sights or take a break he was always in a hurry to get moving. He mentioned that next year that he’d like to ride to Alaska together, That Trip is not going to happen, if I take the trip I’ll go solo. I like to take my time and smell the proverbial flowers along the way. It is a shame because he’s a cool dude, on day rides he is always pretty chilled out.

I can't even handle traveling in a group larger than 2 for more than a day. I think I have a personality problem XD As for the risk factor, when I broke my wrist in the woods not once did I think "Oh man, I wish someone else was here to help me." I just prefer dealing with those problems alone, so I can focus on how to fix the situation and get out. In my experience if I'm in a group and something happens to my bike, or if I (or someone else) gets hurt, people just hover and ask really really stupid questions that take away my ability focus and figure out how to get out of trouble. It's not for everyone for sure, and some people thrive travelling in groups. Just not me haha.

That is a great perspective Amanda! I can totally relate to that feeling of being in control of your own issues and triumphs. :) Thanks Tim! My cast came off on Thursday, SOOO excited to not have the extra couple pounds on my arm anymore. It's pretty stiff, I'm allowed to hold a pencil again, but still not allowed to ride. Doc said that I won't get 70% strength back till like November, so probably looking at January before I'm allowed to ride again. Right now though, I'm just grateful to be able to draw again, get back to working on commissions, and also to be able to sleep all night without waking up six times because of the weight on my arm haha.

Man, this video couldn’t have appeared on my suggested video’s list at a better time! I’ve done several solo trips in the past and exactly as you’d described in your video, they have been deeply personal and amazing experiences. Unfortunately in the past 2 years or so I’ve found myself riding less due to a heavier focused on work and personal life, and have started second guessing my reasoning for doing these rides. I’ve cited all the reasons you listed in this video for not continuing solo riding. More than anything, your video puts me back, closer to -center-, and reminds me of all the reasons why these experiences were so great, so memorable, and probably why I still gravitate to video’s like this. Good job, and thank you!

Hi Tim, just started watching your vids. Your input is always practical and on point. I like this one on solo/group travel. I just bought my 3rd bike after a 26 year hiatus so I am a virtual newbie. I need to get some experience and practice in before I’m ready for a long trip solo or with someone. I’m a loner by personality, and my peers are not interested in bikes. I’m 78 and live in a rural area so it will take me some time to make contacts for even short rides. I’m not mechanically inclined and my bike is an 803cc cruiser. So I’ll just have to be happy with solo day trips for a while.

Tim, I've been silently following you since I found you about a month ago. After watching the majority of your videos, I say your style and topics are right in line with what I was looking for. I ride 2002 R1150RT, bought it 4 years ago next month and put 35k on it. To me, that's a lot: 3 big trips and daily, year around commute to work. For this video's topic, I did a Colorado Springs to Tetons camping ride with a good friend. We have very similar riding styles, eating, and camping. So I agree, be discerning on with whome you take long trips. As solo, I've gone to Phoenix and Tulsa on two different trips. I really like solo for that "spiritual" experience as I catch up on podcasts, books, and praying. Thanks for sharing!

You really nailed this one Tim. I've done big groups 8+ and will never do again for many reasons (namely safety). I've done several large trips 4K+ miles with 4 and had both great and challenging times but with always great memories. I am now fortunate to have a Bob (mine's called Mike) and we have ridden together now for over 5 years. He was a newbie rider but we sucked it up and ran a 4K out of the gate and we had 9 out of 11 days of rain in Summer (go figure). You are so right that even the best of friends can challenge a friendship and thankfully we have endured. We take an Annual Big Trip now for the past 5 years. Have seen Cabo and Banff and countless states. We both enjoy the 2 lane roads and have no issues with 4-5 hundred mile days. Having said that, I also took a 5K trip solo and enjoyed all the freedom that comes with making decisions, u-turns, meals and hotels by myself. You are so right by the Spiritual aspect of that. One note, it does get expensive being solo and not sharing the hotel costs...LOL. Keep up the great work.

Great points Tim! I found it funny about your comment on where to stop for lunch, a good friend and I have done some longer rides and little stuff like that always comes up. He wants to sit down and I am fine eating on the sidewalk of a gas station :). We compromise and the trips have always been a blast. A point that I find as well, different types of motorcycles can also play into it. The big GS vs. a small enduro, after about 3 hours on the road he is exhausted and I haven't even warmed up yet :). A solo trip is on the horizon!

I ride 2up alot in Phoenix since the bike is the only transportation the wife and I have. She isn't very keen on doing 2up out of town so all my road trips have been solo. I've done a couple 400-700 mile day adventures solo that were really cool, but I did a saddle sore 1k to austin with a 2 day return that was absolutely cathartic. i have to admit, if you are not alright with being in your own head for 22 hours, maybe an iron butt alone isn't the best idea, but I loved the time alone to decompress. the 2 day trip back to phoenix was even better since i took county & state roads instead of the interstate and meeting all the people in the back road towns was amazing.

Yep, if you have a problem, you have two choices; you either figure it out, or you don't. I really appreciate the concept of riding parallel, but separate, rides. Never considered that, but will going forward. I also find that being amicable is a big help. Just go with the flow.

I always think about it like skiing, take the chair lift up together and meet at the bottom, do your own thing going down. Going with the flow always helps too!

Life your new format of the split screen while riding but i think you need some stabilization on your POV on the road.
@sumporfuk6 жыл бұрын
Like you and a lot of the other commenters I too have learned the hard way that it is all to easy to throw caution to the wind and tell yourself that it would be a blast to go riding with a friend or even a group of friends. I have lost years of friendship over one simple ride and other relationships were sometimes never the same as a result. I have since learned that basic, sly, and casual interviewing questions will go a long way in helping to predetermine whether or not a ride should be taken without putting someone off or even hurting their feelings. One of the quickest ways for me to eliminate 99% of potential riders without speaking a word is to simply look at the type or model of bike that they are riding. If you are not riding some type of adventure bike I’m fairly certain we’re not going to be compatible. If you want to talk sit back enjoy your ride and take in the scenery most of the time, I’m pretty confident that this will not be a good ride for me. The critical thing that I have learned about myself and riding a motorcycle is that it is always about the ride for me. If you want to cruise the chances are I’m probably not your guy. It’s never about the scenery, or smelling the roses, or anything other than serious riding when I get on the bike. Once I get off the bike for a break or whatever that’s a different story. What makes this phenomenon so intriguing is that I have never been able to find any other scenario that could so easily ruin a relationship more than a motorcycle ride. On the flip side just like a finely tuned suspension, when you do find someone that you can ride with it is magical and that person becomes like gold.

Thanks again Tim for a video that I highly relate to. I did 3 - week long trips this summer, one alone, and one with a riding buddy, and another with 3 other riders. There are advantages to all of course, but the one on my own was the most enjoyable, and most spiritually fulfilling. The part about finding out about yourself is really amazing, and I'm at that age, where I have to rediscover myself more often, to remember sometimes who I really am. The cost of a trip that long with a riding buddy is that sometimes you find out who they really are, and you end the ride with an impression of them quite lower than when you left. The advantage of riding with four is you don't have to cater solely to any one of them during the trip, taking some of the responsibility pressure off. I'm a 550 to 600 mile a day guy, and my buddy wasn't. I'm an 80 mile an hour guy on the open road, and he wasn't. He needed meat with a sit down lunch every day, and I'm kind of light lunch guy. Little things like these build up over the week, and end up dragging you down, taking away from the pure enjoyment of riding is supposed to be all about. But I still look back at all 3 as enjoyable rides, because I was out on my bike and not stuck in this office, as I am now. Thanks for the videos Tim. Keep them coming and ride safe brother.

It bummed me out when I couldn’t get especially the younger brother, my best friend, for my Adirondack trip. So I went solo, my first longish solo trip, 7 days. Even though I didn’t have my buddy, I was so psychologically invigorated from doing it myself. When I got back I was like reborn, kept saying to myself, did I do that?! And I’ve done a lot of stuff in life too. Not my first rodeo as far as adventure and travel and risk goes. But having to fend for myself on the road on my bike and having that freedom instead of relying on him, was liberating. Whether he goes next time or I go solo, I can’t wait till the weather breaks.

Thank you! I can totally relate to that feeling of traveling alone, that invigorating sensation. Hope the weather breaks soon!

I ride solo 95%. My wife doesn't have the riding bug that I've had for 40+years. That being said I also have 2 different sets of buddies that I enjoy taking trips with. I'm fortunate I know. Unfortunately they live in other states. A lot of what you said are good points. That's why I ride solo most of the time. Photography is another hobby of mine and not having other folks along allows me to stop as many times and as long as I like. I've broken down a few times over the years and always have found great folks that were so helpful. One bit of advice that I would like to share is getting to a destination should be just as enjoyable as arriving at one. Enjoy all of the trip and don't rush. Every minute on a bike trip is added minutes to your life.

i do solo and group rides - as for the group rides, I tend to ride with the total variety of bikes, sports bikes, sport tourers, cruisers and me on my Triumph explorer adventure bike - we set waypoints along the route, those that want to ride the route like Isle of man tend to need more frequent and longer breaks. Like the old hare and tortoise story .. i bimble along at the back normally with the big old cruisers but i may stretch my legs a bit and wind the throttle up, then stop at the next waypoint to regroup before going off again. Some routes we set so you have longer faster routes, not so long windy roads and the straight line route for the greenlaneing. This suits everyones riding then we all muster at a waypoint before group riding again. When its a multiple day trip then we tend to go for a camping trip or bed & breakfast this avoids arguments though we try to have the option of b&b nearby to campsites just incase the weather turns for the worse (and in the UK it normally does). When we are riding together we stick to a strict staggered formation which gives bikes the freedom to use the width of the road if they need but also keeps you close enough to deter our 4 wheeled cousins trying to leapfrog the group and carve us up. Thanks for the videos, been an interesting watch and picked up a few extra pointers.

I did have that one perfect riding buddy ( my brother in law ) . When he and my sister divorced I lost that. Been riding solo ever since ( 10 years ) It's a hard pill to swallow and I'm still getting used to it. Great video.

I watched several of you vids, packing, camping what to and what not. I live in NC and want to do a solo trip to natchez trail. Of course my wife of 36 years doesn't like the idea of me traveling alone. I have a great friend that I travel with in a large group once a year and a couple 3 days trips. But after hearing your video, you have given me the confidence to do it on my own. Also reading the other posts helped as well. I think this my be the summer that I pack and take 2 weeks in June and go for it....Hope I like myself after the trip...LOL thanks again for the insight and video....

Great video! I won’t ride in a group larger than 4, and really prefer riding with only 1 other person. I have a former coworker whose riding style matches mine, unfortunately he’s still working and I’m retired, makes it hard to do really long trips. Three years ago, as a retirement celebration, I did a 40 day, 12,000 mile solo trip around the country. I enjoyed the freedom (only two deadlines for the trip, the final one my son’s wedding), but there were times I wished I had someone to share the trip with. One advantage to traveling solo or with one other rider - it’s much easier to meet locals and strike up a conversation, larger groups tend to be off putting. I met some of the most interesting people on my trip. Looking forward to another trip in the future.

I prefer riding alone or with a buddy. Alone for all the stuff you said. It's liberating (and convenient )to make your own decisions about everything and at the end of the trip it just feels empowering. It's a bummer though when I go to the beach alone I don't swim for safety reasons. And sadly I don't know how to fix my motorcycle if anything goes wrong so I get a little OC that everything's working properly before heading out (I ask my brother's mechanic to check it for me). Also being a girl there's a different set of safety considerations when riding solo. Btw I love your channel. This ride along video looks great thank you for taking us along I'm learning a lot. 😊

Thanks for your comment shorea27!! It is liberating and empowering I agree completely! I run into a similar issue when traveling alone, I am glad you brought that up. There is the downside of security when you want to leave the bike for a swim or to go into a store. Thank you so much, I am glad you enjoyed this video and my channel that means a lot to me! Ride safe!

People should think about this stuff. Good topic! My experience is big groups = short rides to say go get breakfast on the weekend, etc. 2-3 riders = day trips. And for long-distance solo trips are best or 2 riders, you and someone easy going.

Thank you! Sounds like the perfect method to me, I completely agree.

There is only one man I will ride with in a staggered formation with and we know each other so well, we can easily anticipate the moves the other will make before they make it. I like as well the idea of breaking off for a little bit on my own if there is something I want to see those riding with me that aren't interested in at all. We'll pick a place down the road, and we'll meet up later on. That has really worked out well in the last few years.

Hey Tim, I want to thank you for making this video because this is something I think about a lot. When I first got into riding, I rode a lot with a friend, who introduced me to it all. While I found this to be rewarding for the most part, I also found it to be a lot about compromise as time went on. Sometimes that compromise is more than you want it to be. Then, my friend moved north when he retired while I remained in the far southeast. So, I joined a motorcycle group in my area where I went on weekend and some weekday rides with as many as 20 people. While compromise was not as much of an issue, safety and personalities were. I was rather new to riding, and I quickly discovered that group riding can be a challenge, especially with varying personalities. I enjoyed the rides and experiences nonetheless, but I grew to not really enjoying being on the bike as much. Now, I do a lot more solo riding where I go out on at least one of my days off and get lost for 4-6 hours with no maps and just driving roads I have never been on, and I absolutely love it. I have started solo camping a day or so in order to spread out further and explore new places. I still do a breakfast run here and there with a group, which for breakfast, normally is no more than 7-12 people. I enjoy these rides because they are short in duration, and it gives me a chance to talk to people I do not see on a daily basis. I am planning to ride from Florida to the Natchez Trace Parkway north and then ride the mountains of TN and GA before returning to Florida. I plan it to be about a 10-12 day trip of riding and camping solo. My wife thinks I am a bit crazy for wanting to do it alone, but she is 100% supportive and tells me to just go when I am ready. Your adventures and videos have inspired me to want to see and feel what solo motorcycling and camping on a long trip can be like, and I know I will grow spiritually. Thanks again.
@FTAAdventures6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Tommy Reynolds! I agree about that compromise, that is a tough one. Sounds like you have found a good balance for yourself of riding solo on adventures but still enjoying the social aspect of shorter group rides. That should be a wonderful adventure, that Natchez Trace is a great ride! Solo camping is just as rewarding as solo riding! You will love it, I am sure! Have fun when you do take that trip and ride safe my friend!

Totally agree about the freedoms of riding solo on long trips. I remember being on a long ride when stopped at an entrance to a state park and a guy in a group of 6 riding big cruisers asked me why most of the solo riders he sees are riding BMWs. I didn’t have an answer for him other than saying I enjoying riding alone.

I get that, it does seem Harley riders have a lot more people to ride with. I enjoy the solo trips too, much more freedom. Safe travels!

I just finished my first adventure ride, 15 days. First with the GF, two up for a few days, then with a friend, each on their motorcycle. GF was falling a sleep on the annoying bits of road, which sadly, were unavoidable. But really enjoyed the rest. Friend couldn't keep up, got tired and we just have different riding styles. Man, it was tough. Really enjoyable at parts, and really stressful at other times. In the end we had fun, but I'm not sure I would do it again. The ride got to an awkward stage in which we just parted ways, the last few days were solo, and man, that was WONDERFUL. I'm like you, to me, riding is... just ZEN, just ... hard to describe. I love it.

We've always traveled alone and group riding is inherently dangerous for the most part. Even if everyone is a good rider, they will still do stuff you're not prepared for. We stop when we want to and go where and when we want to. There are just too many issues with having extra riders with you to change your plans. Most of my friend will ride, but not as far as we like to and always need to stop and eat or drink way too often for us. We usually ride for an hour or so before we stop for a small breakfast, then ride all day before we stop for a motel, eat and relax a bit. Sometimes we will stop during the day and have a snack in the afternoon (coffee and a piece of pie goes well!) I rode with friends before and although it was fun, we never seem to want the same out of the trip. I'm just a solo rider I guess.

He knows I like planning these things out, and lets me look for overnight stays etc. He just tells me when he's hungry or needs fuel. worked perfectly. already planning for next year. other friend, less so, but still works, cuz I don't see him that much and it's good to rebond. But both are pretty vocal so I always know what I'm getting into, and so do they.

I've ridden across country many times, mostly solo. I'd meet so many people along the way- some would take me to their homes for dinner. The wife and kids would be asking me about my trip. Not a lonely way to go! Riding with others doesn't seem to jibe with my flow, but there are some riders who do cruise well together. I'm pretty laid back, so I don't like twisting a throttle alongside some reckless rider. I'm into the experience, not how fast I can get there. Finding a good wing rider is not easy, but worth the possibility! I ride with my wife a lot, and she's easy to pack. She likes what I like.

@foamy6464 жыл бұрын
Hi Tim, one thing you didn’t touch on about solo riding-you meet more people. That, to me, was the only epiphany I got from a cross country trip. The U.S. is filled with kind, caring people. You don’t get that from the news. But, it’s true. I don’t know why folks are so divided now. Politics, for sure, but if that’s your main focus in life, then have at it. It’s your loss. You’re missing out. Then again, I tried to avoid any sort of metropolis, which is where I found the most indifference. But even in one (a metro area), I did find some warm personalities. Being by yourself, you’re much more approachable. And people will engage with you and I found it to be the highlight of my trip. I heartily recommend a long solo trip. Discover the real America-you’ll be amazed.

I rode 270 kilometers with 10 people and it's fun because it is my first time experience. We ride with the same bikes because we are in the same group and our group has 30 persons above. Our motorcycle are Raider R150 FI (which is 150cc) but I hope I'll get a bigger bike like 600s but it's fun riding with 150s.

The largest group I’ve been with is 58. It was very impressive! When we entered the town of silverton Colorado, most the people stopped and looked as we came into town. Going up the mountain pass was a treat. But it is not my favorite number of riders. Every time we stopped for gas, it would take an hour or more to get back on the road. (Old men and their bladders) . Also after 400 miles or more, good luck keeping that many together. All in all it was fun, but I like going solo the best or at the most 4.

Since I'm only 5 foot two, I need to ride 2 up with my girlfriend, Luwanda. She's an Amazon beast at 6 foot six. I wear platform shoes so I look taller, but she holds the bike up at stops as my passenger. And at times I have gotten into a bar brawl or two, either over my shoes or political beliefs, and she ends up finishing the fight for me. So, that's a part of some good 2 up travel.
