Bitless has always been an important part of my riding because sometimes it shows the horse that they don't need something in their mouth for you to feel safe with them and also it truly builds excellent trust between rider and horse. I would always recommend someone to ride bitless once in a while.

But riding bitless causes more pain, unless you ride with a neck rope. With a bitless bridle, it is designed to control the horse through pain, as muscles on it’s face area, when you pull on the bitless bridle, you pull on sensitive muscles, therefore causing pain for the horse.

I agree about riding bareback. I find this gives both you and the horse a better feel. Riding is about communication. The better the communication the better the result. I loaned a horse that was going to be destroyed as it was unrideable and dangerous. I removed the really strong gag bit and I had a different horse. She was sweet, a very easy ride. At the end of the summer loan she was sold on by the owners as she had to bad a reputation at home. I gave her back a future and had a fun summer with her.

A friend of mine also rode her horse exclusively in sidepull doing only trailrides, no problem whatsoever. As you ride mostly with your body, the bit is not essential, the reins connect to the head, but most aids don't need the bit, that's why one can ride fairly well with just a neckrope. I am happy you enjoyed your experience, it's so amazing to try new things and get thrilled when it's fun !

My horse has always had a mind of his own (though he is still eager to listen) and I tried just using a halter on him and attaching the other end of the lead rope to the other side of the halter...and he did so well!!! He listens to that way better than with a bit and is a lot more willing to do what I ask. I now have completely left the bridle behind and always ride him in a halter. It's perfect and is way more comfortable for him. Honestly, bits are not essential and I think people should be open to riding bitless :)

Firstoff, what a cool horse, amazing mover! In terms of bitless, most horses I have ridden bitless do much, much better that with a bit..and to be specific I am talking about side pulls...I had one pony who really did not collect up great in the side pull and a full cheeck snaffle worked better on him. I have had one white nosed mare ( tendency to get sun burned ) who did dramatically better bitless as she was always nervous with a bit no matter how mild or light with the hands, I do think in part because the sunburn played a part. That mare in particular would collect up amazing in the side pull or simple jumping hackamore and it really relaxed her. My third point is be sure whatever bitless bridle you have make sure it is fitted properly because that is critically important to how it is supposed to work ( and not potentially injure the horse ). For sure they should not be too low over the soft cartilage of the nose.
@poniesatemypencils3 жыл бұрын
This is absolutely amazing! So great to see people at least trying bitless out! Especially someone like you who has never thought about riding bitless before. Well done! Horses generally go well in bitless bridles (sidepulls, like the Nalanta) because it's similar pressure to a halter. If a horse knows how to lead on the ground, good with listening to the aids, they should understand bitless bridle pressure well. Off course there are some horses that may need more training on the ground beforehand because it's something new. Also riding with your seat more than your hands is so important too. Since you're a dressage rider, you probably know this. I'm a bitless rider and I started my young green arabian bitless (just in a halter). I ride him through town, long 20km trail rides at a walk trot and canter, I have done jumping, and mounted games - all bitless. Remember, having control is an illusion. We will never have full control over such a large flight animal. But training is key, also doing things to strengthen your bond with your horse. I also do liberty and clicker training with my horse, and that has made my horse very loyal and he puts his trust in me, he always seeks comfort in me whenever he gets anxious. I hope you do more bitless riding in the future, I actually really hope bitless bridles become allowed by the FEI for all sports. I would love to do dressage with my bitless arab one day.

At first I felt a bit odd with your comments of not having control or stopping without a bit but then you reminded us you’ve never done it and you’ve been trained in classical dressage! I personally agree with the rider should have a choice of what their horses wear in comps. I ride my horse bitted and bitless and she does well both ways, I think we should always go for what the horse does best in. And control is a human way of making ourselves feel better lol. Even with a bit we never truly have control of a horse, they are much stronger and if the wanted to punch through the pressure of the bit they could at any moment, the same with a bitless. So I agree to always be safe with your horse but the biggest thing is to train them properly on the ground and through slow development and they will most likely to be able to go in anything:) and it’s so nice to see top riders like yourself trying new things so openly❤️ maybe if you were to start a petition for more bitless dressage competitions or a least classes I’m sure a large amount of people would sign especially with your following! We need to put the horses over tradition😊

Fun fact, most horses are started(broken) in a halter or some type of bitless option because nose pressure is the most basic cue because if they can lead, they’ll give to nose pressure. Once the horse is trained a bit they might move to a different bitless option for more training or go straight to a snaffle and be trained more for an advanced bit. I used to think bitless was the best way but I spent two years learning all I could about bitless and bits. The bit isn’t always the problem, sometimes it is you and your training/connection with your horse. If you need to go bitless because your horses is having problems riding and there’s no issues with their teeth/mouth and they’re sound to ride and their saddle and girth fits and the bit you were using isn’t too advanced for them, then it probably isn’t the bit it’s probably your riding. Also lots of bitless options like some mechanical hackamores and even a bosal can be too harsh and rub the hair off the nose/chin and sometimes the hair never grows back. It’s not always the tack, sometimes it’s us that’s the problem

Ex dressage rider here, I rode dressage for 5 years before completely switching to endurance. I found all horses I rode were eventually better bitless than bitted (some needed few more sessions to understand it fully). I left dressage as I couldnt compete with my horse (he had damaged tongue from his pervious owner misusing bit). Now all horses I train are ridden bitless, it allows horse to voice their opinions better and rider to to avoid shortcuts. Right now there is a huge battle to allow bitless in fei competitions, hacks are allowed in jumping and xc but not dressage. After starting tons of unhandled stallions bitless I can also confirm that you are as safe or even safer bitless (talking about bolting. You should do one rein stop, opposed to pulling on both reins as some begginers think. One rein stop calmly stops a horse, some horses are super sensitive if pressure is applied on one side of the bit, to put it simply too much one sided pressure hurts some. And pain doesnt mix well with scared horse. With a horse that bolts, rears or does all kinds of "crazy" things I only use rope halters, I found that its way more effective this way)

I've been riding my 21 year old appendix bitless now for 4 months (total of 6 months). Within two sessions he went from nervous high chicken head to level and relaxed. He sticks his head into the nose band for me without any prodding. I also rode out 18.1 draft horse in just a halter (we "knew" his previous history but we were all so incredibly uncertain about how he would do and we didn't have any draft bits) he also did fantastic. He stopped right on que and turned beautifully, I really think bitless is the way to go. For me it tells the horse you are trusting them to respond to you and in return they don't have to worry about any pain (accidental or otherwise) that they could potentially receive

So nice you tried bitless! :D I have only ridden bitless on my horse and have trained her from the begging since she was a foal. Now she is 5 and it has never been a problem riding bitless and she is super safe to ride both bitless and bareback! :D

I changed to bitless because my horse hated bits, we tried every bit going to make him more comfortable and nothing worked. He was at the point of being dangerous. Since switching him to bitless he is completely different and a pleasure to ride. I've always said, of something doesn't work for him then we find something that does and bitless for him is amazing. He hacks, schools and jumps and he is so much happier and I'm happier knowing he's comfortable.

I was recently watching a video on a YT channel called "Painted Desert Ranch". They out in Arizona somewhere I believe and raise QHs as well as cattle. Big spread, lots of livestock to work with their own horses. The last video I watched a mounted group was going out to round up a herd of mares and foals running in a huge pasture area. One of the horses used on that roundup was a palomino gelding that was only being ridden for the third time ever - and he was being ridden with a hackamore - no bit. He did fine. Did as he was told, helped round up the mares, calm, obedient. I should think if a range-bred QH on his third ride ever can be worked bitless in a situation like that, your highly trained dressage horse should be able to do the same.

Most ranch horses are started with hackamores and work their way up to a bit.

This was AWESOME to watch! Wow! I really think it’s also a testament to how proper dressage schooling should teach a horse to not only rely on the hands but actually mainly the seat and legs🤩.

Great video. I have an 18 yr. old Haflinger gelding that I purchased about 18 mo. ago. It became obvious that he wanted no parts of a bit; even a French snaffle. A friend suggested a western hackamore and boy what a difference it made in my guy. He is so much happier!

What a difference the bitless made. He really seemed to keep his head still compared to when he had a chunk of cold metal in his mouth. Of course it's strange for both of you to start with. I am definitely an advocate for going bitless and any horse can do it. Good luck with it and I hope we see more bitless riding. 🐴😁

I ride all my horses in bitless bridles for barrel racing, jumping, trail riding and anything else we do. Once I changed from bit to bitless they show they are happy with it. They also run faster because they can breathe better.

Loved you sharing this experience with us! I have been riding bitless since my teens - I would back ponies and ride them away bitless then add in the bit. When I got my own pony at the age of 20 I backed her bitless and she pretty much stayed that way as she hated the bit. My ex-racehorse I took bitless straight away with a very similar bridle - had the same wheels for noseband cheek and reins - made sure he responded from the ground then hacked him round the block. We did TREC with that bridle. I now ride my lovely Spanish horse bitless - his previous owner trained him bitless and bitless he will stay. I love how much more I have to be aware of my core when riding Inc laterals. I have a video on my own channel on how to fit the bridle.

Hi, I was wondering if every horse can be ridden bitless, for example if it never was ridden on one? I don't have my own horse, but when I'll, I think it would be a great idea to spice up trainings sometimes. And if yes, then what is the best bitless bridle? Not sharp one, like hackamore, but maybe other ones such as bosal, scawbrig or dr Cook bitless bridle?
@JenniNellist3 жыл бұрын
@@retro2546 I think many horses can. It mostly depends on what they've learned about pressure over their nose and around their head. My Bronwen was pretty badly halter trained and when I got her, a tight hold on her lead rope put her into panic mode. So she doesn't react too well when a strong hold is taken on the reins bitless due to that very deep seated emotional reposnse. She is very good in a bit because she's never had the same learning experiences bitted. So kept calm she's fine bitless, but I wouldn't hack her that way for safety reasons. It's kind of an academic question with her too as she also has conformation issues that means she's not actually ridden very much.

Hackamore bridles are bitless as well and this almost looks like it hits some of the same spots. I’ve ridden with the bitless bridles that cross under the cheeks as well and honestly I LOVE to use them for training or trail riding and just everyday stuff so that when it’s time to train for the competition they have an even softer mouth which we know translates to easier aid control with a bit. He is GORGEOUS ALSO
