Sam, a standard Cobra Lance Fire Fighting tool that has been around for decades will make safe a ev car battery battery pack in less than 15mins, after 15mins of burn. As per Swedish fire safety authority. Can also use a fire fighter's manual tool to pierce a hole and stick a water hose in it. Requires update training for fire fighter's but probably a day course. Presumably a bike battery is easier to make safe than an 200kwh hummer battery fire. Also batteries don't produce a river of fire.
@NewZeroland Жыл бұрын
Oooo good to know! At the moment, tracks here don't even have people trained to put out fires. Just some fire extinguishers. So they'd have to hire a firefighter to be there all day, which is probably really expensive. I hope they figure it out soon because I'd love to hit the track on my bike again.

Really enjoyed the video Sam. I don't follow bike racing over here but I do not understand why each bike racing venue can make up there own rules about banning electric bikes. It's the future of transport and we're in the 21st century.....bummer. We have problems domestically here with people buying crap batteries for Ebikes and Scooters, those catch fire yes but brands like Energica are solid and safe brands. If racing venues are scared of battery fires then they need to buy the right safety and fire kit along with training. NZ is what it use to be. Found that out when I was over in September. The racing scene is still working out electric - and I have a bad feeling that the petrol heads that still run it and rule its standards bodies don't like to have to think of anything different. For some reason they're OK with petrol fires, avgas fires, engines exploding on dynos, fuel spills, oil spills, a thousand other things going wrong with ICE engines - but a lithium battery? Oooh, that sounds dangerous! I hope the electric racing gets sorted out, especially since they've been running the electric TT and GP races for years now. There's got to be standards in existence already. Sam, you keep on riding and having fun. Those long distance rides are hard on the body for sure, especially if you're in the wet or the wind. I dunno if faster charging or fewer stops makes any of that easier, to be honest. What I really want is just to be able to pull up, plug in and charge, without having to faff around with apps and checks and queues.
@NewZeroland Жыл бұрын
Yep, you're totally right. I'm tired of the apps. Just put a card reader on it and charge me! Also, speed up charging to take 15-20min instead of 40min and this would be a game changer. The lithium fire thing is definitely an issue though.. they can't just "let it burn" like the trackday organizer told me, because that would be the end of the whole trackday for everybody. They need to sort something out and I hope it happens soon.

RIGHT???? That is a great point. I don't think the 2030 thing is about stopping oil though.. it's just a ban on the sale of new ICE vehicles. Old / current ICE vehicles will still be around a long time.

Its depressing about them banning electrics on track. I live close to Snetterton in the UK, and the only reason I want an electric motorbike is so that I can enjoy riding it on track. I used to race a kawasaki ZX6R. There was a battery fire on an electric motorbike about 10 years ago at silverstone in the UK and they just used a JCB to push it to a safer area, and then let it burn itself out which took a while. But that fire was caused by mis-use - manually overcharging the pack which had no battery management system because it was a prototye. I dont see the problem on a certified road going motorcycle. Its already been proven that they survive crashes and are far less likely to catch fire. In all honesty I think there is a bit of unfair baise against EV's from the motorsports racing fraternity. I work in motorsports and Ive seen it. I drive a nissan leaf, and often get comments from motorsport people about it. Recently I was told they were dangerous because they make no sound!

None of the tracks around here care if you run electric or not. Vehicle fires are pretty much an end of the day for everyone gas or electric and lithium battery fires are simple and it's well documented how you put them out...water, whenever it starts to flare up you douse it with more water. It's sad that track owners allow fear to inform their decisions and then don't bother to do any research. I swear though my electric motorcycles have been the least reliable of any vehicle. I've only put a few hundred km on it but I've already had my Energica stop working on me and had to have it towed because it decided suddenly out of the blue to put me in limp mode and reduce my total remaining SoC from 32% to 0% because of a battery imbalance. I've had to keep charging it and topping it off to rebalance, but I think I'm going to have to sell the Energica as the range sucks, especially in the cold which 40 degrees is not that cold in my opinion and the Zero never had so much of a cold issue, it feels really slow, the performance doesn't feel any better than my Zero even though I know it is, the speedometer 10% inaccuracy is annoying and I realize I had a better top speed on my Zero, on mine I can't turn the traction control off and it's just a very difficult and unpleasant bike. Maybe the new ones are better but I'm not willing to spend that kind of money to find out. I'll keep it until late spring at least and dump it then. Hoping I can get Zero to replace my battery under warranty since I got it from the auction finally for $1,800 which after fees and everything was $3k! It qualifies within the 5 years since the last replacement as long as they don't blame me for the temporary abuse it had out of my possession.
@NewZeroland11 ай бұрын
Ah man! That sucks to hear. Some other people have had issues with their Energica batteries but what sets Energica apart from Zero is the customer support that actually exists. If you want it fixed, they'll fix it. Unfortunately it sounds like you found a really cheap old model that was most likely not maintained. I hope both companies can make it right for you!
@spike_spencer11 ай бұрын
Only had 3,400 miles on it and was garage kept, never had any rain on it and was never used below 10* Celsius before it got here and with extensive service records. Everything seems to be in spec, I was just riding it hard and testing the limits, simply didn't expect to find them where I did. The battery warranty is much shorter on the Energica, so it's fully out of warranty even if there was anyone around here to work on them. So just planning to be more gentle with it and keep it topped up and balanced a lot more than I ever did with the Zero for the next few months of ownership.

Crotch rockets are superb for speed and use as a daily driver, but they suck for long distance due to the posture you're forced into - said Captain Obvious. The difference in range was amazing to see though, and I couldn't help wondering what the range would be if you took roads that kept your speed down to 80 or less the entire way. Bet you'd do the trip with two recharges even if it cost you a couple more hours.
@NewZeroland Жыл бұрын

@@NewZeroland I think it’s a really different experience when you’re ‘rushing’ to a destination, and it is VERY hard to enjoy it if you’re filming. The more I do it, the better I get at recognizing good filming spots, but it is time consuming - just a part of the craft. If I’m doing a multi day trip, I take a day or two ‘just for me’ that I don’t really focus on filming at all. But it sounds like you were doing a cannonball essentially - filming is not a part of that equation 🤣

Love your work, shame about the tracks reaction to electric vehicles. What is the point of all these race programs for electric to encourage people to move forward when the NZ tracks are stuck in the 60's? I know what you mean about long rides on bikes. For me a trip from Tauranga to Wellington is an easy 6 hour trip in the ute but on the bike different story. Yes it is easier to pass etc. but wow do you get monkey butt if you try to push on through with less stops. Of course it doesn't help that my bike is a DR650 and the seat is like a 4x2 but all the same it is just more comfortable doing the long stuff in the comfort of the ute. I'll save the bike for twisties and gravel :)

All the charging apps... that's the EV situation in Europe at the moment. It's getting completely out of control, gazillions of apps and they all have their own prices. At every charger you have to check the prices of each app to avoid picking one that thinks 1 euro/kWh is acceptable. So agonising to be leafing through your smartphone for minutes on end at every charging stop. (Unless you have a Tesla, because the Superchargers are waaaay cheaper than everybody else)

Whaat? It’s not like EVs just came out last year. Boo to those tracks banning EVs. Such an exciting new part of the racing world. Too bad they’re not keeping up with times. Would think it’d be a no brainer to educate, train, & invest in improved fire mitigation for tracks instead of saying “we don’t know what to do so don’t bring em”. It’s ‘shocking’, really. I guess you’re just on the cutting edge, leading the ‘charge’ for EV racing in NZ. What ‘power’ u have!😏
@NewZeroland Жыл бұрын
Yep, well said. We've had electric motorcycles in NZ for almost 8 years now, but they weren't concerned about me because I was just one guy with a really small battery. Now that Teslas are finally getting popular here (yeah NZ is way behind) everybody wants to take them to the track and the fear of battery fires 'sparked' a conversation about safety, and now we have to wait. I just hope it doesn't take as long as they expect.
@gasdive Жыл бұрын
It's especially frustrating as I've so often seen absolutely dreadful fire control at racetracks so many times. Watching a marshall run to a bike that's got a tiny little fire, then be unable to work the extinguisher, then start *reading the instructions* on the side of the extinguisher while the bike is completely engulfed is so frustrating and amazingly common.
@daRogueJedi Жыл бұрын
Hopefully some added benefit will come outta this with better fire control. Good for all
@awo1fman Жыл бұрын
If it were me, I wouldn't support tracks with that cop-out attitude by reverting to ICE. You can try all you want to rationalize it, but the truth is that it has nothing to do with safety and they're just being jerks toward EVs. Seriously, the likelihood of a battery fire is EXTREMELY low, and it's not rocket science to deal with even if it did happen. There are EV racing classes in other places, and how many battery fires have they had? I have yet to hear of one. But again, that's not even really the issue. They're just tired of all the complaints from the ICE guys getting constantly lapped by sll the EVs -- that never break down...
@NewZeroland Жыл бұрын
It could be both. EVs might be setting new lap records soon and they don't want that, but a battery fire really would end the whole trackday for everyone. I talked to Energica about it and they said no MotoE bike has ever caught on fire because of a crash. They're probably just being overly cautious and want to make sure they're ready for the worse case scenario, but it's pretty annoying. I don't want to wait 18 months.
@Waldo1122 Жыл бұрын
This country is the perfect example of why you don't give the government any power whatsoever over The People. A special racing license for going too fast on a track? They are literally begging for people to just start street racing. If you can't have fun with your fast vehicles on the track then where are you supposed to have fun with your fast vehicles?
@NewZeroland Жыл бұрын
