That is SUCH a good idea! Efficient use of space to keep the cost down, plus privacy and the opportunity to lay flat and sleep. On sleeper trains in the UK you have the choice of a budget price reclining seat (very uncomfortable and almost impossible to sleep), or a very expensive cabin (comfortable but… expensive!). I think maybe in the west we have a cultural aversion to sleeping “on the floor”.

In Russia, we have 2 kinds of sleepers: 1) normal "coupés" (cabins), with 4 or 2 seats (known as "SV", for some reason, now also available with showers), the second type is, of course, more expensive; 2) "Platzcard" - somewhat similar to this one: there're no doors, only two tiers of benches to sleep on. Historically, solo female travelers preferred it for safety reasons, but now you can choose from all-female or mixed "coupés"

I always liked the vibe of train rides. Usually quite peaceful and calming. In the late 80s, though, most of us didn't have cell phones and certain other conveniences. I wish Amtrak had this option. Those complaining about the (lack of) padding are missing the point: it is easier for some (including me) to sleep with limited padding if we can lie flat than it is to sleep on a padded seat that does not fully recline. Plus, it is a simple matter to buy an inflatable backpacking pad (therm-a-rest) if you need more padding (or just buy nicer sleeper accommodations).
@agnidas58162 жыл бұрын
Yes! Easier to put something to fix some issues on a flat surface than to be forced to endure an uncomfortable soft surface which is so difficult to battle (cannot fix with more soft stuff well..) Exactly, I'm not sure how common this is in Japan, but in most of Europe people have roll up foam mats to sleep on for camping anyway (or, probably more commonly for children's sleepovers), if you put them on a surface that isn't super hard, they are perfectly good to sleep on.

I like the idea of simple berth, with some privacy. It looks like you can stretch your back flat and not get sore from sitting in a seat all night. It is certainly more comfortable than coach class, especially when flying. I say all this with my youthfuldays gone by, whereas nowadays, i might stull prefer a hard-walked compartment with toilet.

Thank you very much for your video. Adore Japan. Such a beautiful country. It is very nice to visit . Hadn't any idea there are such kind of realway means of transportation in Japan. Supposed only high-speed bullet trains like Shinkansen or HR. Japan doesn't stop surprising. Here everyone can find for oneself everything what he wants for your needs. Nice train, gorgeous landscapes, beautiful country. So, welcome to Japan - the sunrise country.

It’s normal to eat raw eggs in Japan. You can even purchase them from vending machines. It’s typical breakfast to crack raw egg over steamed rice and a drop of soy sauce
