Looks like a cool ride across the airport from the gate area to the main terminal with lots of airplanes in the view! Very cool Kevin for you filming the mobile lounge when you arrived yesterday from LAX! Enjoying all your great streaming from IAD and DCA this week in Washington DC!

I love the positivity in this chat about how unique thwy are, but no one has mentioned the BO after a long international flight in the summer arriving to Virginia's humidity. The smell of jet fuel, ppl, and the carpets of these antique vehicles is a signature one.

@johnmaster3748
@johnmaster3748 Жыл бұрын
You are not comparing apples with apples. The LAX people mover will be a landside transportation option linking hotels, rental cars, and remote parking to the terminal check-in lobbies. [Pre-TSA] These mobile lounges are an airside means of shuffling passengers between the headhouse and the departure gates by crossing the active airfield. [Post-TSA] Kevin, of course, did the jouney the other way around. Most airports built underground systems to do this job (moving walkways or trains). A few built systems over the airfield (MCO and TPA, automated trains; the new LGA a pedestrian bridge). But IAD had these mobile lounges before the midfield concourses were built. One suspects they have preserved them to retain uniqueness and preserve their own tradition.

My first Dulles flight [1980, age 12] predates the construction of the midfield concourses. The Saarinen terminal's original conceit was the mobile lounges delivered passengers directly to their specific plane parked on the tarmac. (In those less paranoid times, my grandfather was allowed to accompany me on the people mover out to the plane because i was flying solo.) So, my first time in one of those vehicles, it elevated itself to the level of a 727's door height, and I stepped aboard the TWA aircraft du jour. The concept was that a smaller headhouse could handle more flights per hour because planes would not take up gate space between loading and unloading (typically an hour, right?). Each terminal gate could service a new plane every 15 minutes or so by instead moving the passengers to the plane. Two or three people movers per flight, as needed. So the headhouse needed fewer departure gates. But there was an upper limit to how many individual planes could be serviced from one people mover gate. (They collected boarding passes and tickets at this point in the process, as passengers transitioned from terminal to people mover.) Eventually, the airport outgrew the terminal. Rather than mar Saarinen's elegant lines with an attached concourse, they chose midfield concourses. (They may have done both!) Now, the people movers connect terminal to concourse rather than to specific plane. One suspects that if the mobile lounges never existed, IAD would have built automated trains or underground walkways to its midfield concourses like every other airport expansion since the 1980s. But they did exist; IAD incorporated their function into the newer concourses; and in doing so retained a link to its own past and unique tradition. Perhaps more importantly, this approach preserved Saarinen's vision for keeping the headhouse smaller. Since that terminal is deemed an architectural landmark of mid-century modern design, and IAD's explosive growth has had minimal impact on the terminal's visual appearance, I'd say they made a smart choice.

What washington-dulles needs is a mobile lounge capable of reaching the upper deck of the A380 boarding from a remote stand. JFK also has them in DL paint scheme.

What sort of Mobile Lounge is that at 1:15 with the odd looking fins? Is that the type that can raise and lower itself?
@WoodJack99
@WoodJack99 5 ай бұрын
That is a “plane mate”, the later variation with the fins. Unlike the original lounges it only has a cab on one side, but it can adjust in height.

I might have missed Kevin talking about it and the Chad move so fast it’s hard to make friends on there my eyesight is limited, so I would move so fast and it takes me a little while to get back to someone if they do answer me just frustrating but thank you very much for your help
