Riding out a rain storm in my Big Agnes tent

Hiking from Lake Reflection to East lake Sept. 2013 we encountered an electrical storm. We found a good campsite on the north side of East Lake to set up our 3 man Big Agnes tent. The rain fly was set up first to keep the interrior of the tent dry!

I soloed the lost coast trail a month ago. No one around for miles, no cell service. Around 6:00 p.m. it started to rain, I setup my tent, crawled inside and it started to downpour. I laid there for about an hour listening to the waves, the rain on my tent and the wind. I passed out and woke up a few times through the night....it was still pouring rain. I woke up about 530 am and it hadn't let up. About 6 a.m. it started to lighten up and stopped at 7am. I got out fixed coffee and watched the sun rise over the high crested ridgeline and color the ocean awake with golden light. One of the best mornings I've had in a long time.

I love being outside so much that I built a lean-to shelter on the back of my house, (clear plastic roof with wooden sides and open at the front) so now when I am at home I can still be out in the open air in all weathers. There is something special about being out in the rain while still remaining dry under a shelter as it pours down. Wonderful.

Camping and backpacking are my favorite activities of all time. The only thing that tops those are camping in the rain! Living in the desert I rarely experince it, but living in Southern California gives me close access to many places where I can be in the rain. Love this video!

European tents always have the rainfly with the poles and the inside is hooked on afterwards. Make so much more sense when setting up in the rain.

I wasted a lot of money on Dept store brands. They all give you a bad experience that's why most people never repeat their camping experience. I camp now on a Kelty tn2 or an Eureka midory6, MSR inflatable pads all very light and comfy. I am getting the best from high end gear. Definitely worth every penny. You don't have to buy everything at once. During two years I have been acquiring the best gear. When I opened my eyes I had a serious camping equipment. That is what makes for repeated camping.

I use a small 3 person tent for winter camping and 8 person tent for summer camping . Smaller tent is easier to keep warm and the bigger tent stays cool in the summer sometimes cold at night even in Florida .
