As far as I know, our system is called the "L" as most of the system runs on elevated tracks. Portions of the Red and Blue Lines run underground as subways for part of their routes. And there are some parts that run on surface tracks, such as part of the Brown Line. A unique feature of our L system is the availability of heat lamps at all outdoor stations. They are available for use from November 1 to March 31. Came in handy during last January's polar vortex outbreak, when the outside temperature was -20 F!

it is called the "L" because it forms a loop. it does go under ground
@TheChicagoL5 жыл бұрын
@@jewbearidk Nope. It's call the "L" because while it does go underground, 90% of its operation throughout the city (South side, North side, and West side) is elevated (el or "L"). Before the State Street subway (Chicago's first subway) opened in 1943, nearly 100% of Chicago's rapid transit system was above ground, and not just in the "loop" area.

True, but then alot of subways are cleaner and nicer than New York City subways. I wouldn't call our subway overhyped though. The majority of our trains run 24/7. You can't say that about trains in Boston, Philadelphia or DC.

So true. Whenever I visit my family back home in NYC, I cringe at the dirty cars, outdated tech, and manual announcements that are all still so prevalent. CTA here in Chicago is a lot like the level of transit quality and service that a lot of European cities enjoy.

Is there a lot of walking between one transportation to another (like from this train to catch a bus, for instance)? I lived in Cleveland, Ohio and it was pure hell! Their transportation system was HORRIBLE! I had to walk what seemed like a mile at times between getting off the rapid and catching my next bus! And not only that, but their buses smelled like poop and pee, and they would be bloody at times (yes, actually bloody on the seats and a couple of them had blood smeared all over the place! I don’t know WHAT was up with that and why the employees wouldn’t even acknowledge it or clean it up for God’s sake)...it was pure nasty! 🤢 Sorry for the rant lol So I’m just curious if this transportation system is going to serve me better since I’m going to be moving there later this year. I understand that no place is perfect and public transportation can be a bit dicy at times...but I certainly pray that it’s better than Cleveland🙏

This is very dated but when I arrived in Chicago to go to technical school from very small town Oh I learned quickly that it was an easy town to get around in and the L matched up so well with the busses. I traveled a large triangle from where I lived on the N side not far from the Lake, down to the Loop to work a morning job at the C Board of Trade. After work, out to NW side for evening class and finally home. I had to switch from L to Buss and back three times morning and night. It worked great and only had up to walk 2 blocks at 1 transfer.
