I often take battlefield tourists to St Valery and Dieppe. And we've cycled that stretch of road many times with the Help for Heroes Big Battlefield Bike Ride. Many people know what happened in Dieppe in August 1942 but not many know that, in 1940, the 51st Highland Division was trapped in St Valery by the advancing German Blitzkreig. Very few soldiers got away. Most went into captivity. I'm hoping to be there again on my bike at the end of October. You've whetted my appetite for it. Thank you.

Chapeau. If you had a little more time you could have ridden a bit further west along the coast to Etretat to see the spectacular cliffs that inspired Claude Monet. But not a place to be on a windy day or riding into a howling headwind.

Last time I was in Dieppe was in 1970 taking the ferry back to Newhaven after our camping holiday with my Mum and Dad! lol Some great roads there and in and around Normandy. Rouen was birth place of 5 times TDF winner Jaques Anquetil too! I'll have to give it a go some time.

Rouen main cathedral pre COVID used to have a light show with music projected onto it every hour or so in the evenings which was amazing to watch. Lovely place to visit Katie.

We really enjoy your channel, please continue and we wish you the best of health in these trying times. My wife is 55 and I’m 56 and you inspire us to get on our bikes and go ride. You are an example of what we would like to achieve. Well, besides the vegan thing. I have no idea how you bike 90, 120, or 140 miles in a day. The best I have done is 60 miles averaging 19Km hr. I know there are hundreds of individuals around the globe who feel the same way, but is nice to know you are reaching out and motivating an old man in Texas.

Similar to what you said at the end, the ride back to the ferry after the PBP last year was probably my favourite cycling of that whole week. I left it really late till about lunchtime to catch the overnight ferry. I rode on my own on a perfect day on calm French holiday roads. The only issue was to find places open to get some food and drinks. The one time I saw another cyclist was someone bombing it down the hill in the opposite direction, while I had a wee stop. 9 out of 10 day!

Greetings from Oman! Have recently found and am enjoying your channel. Resonating a lot with my experiences. I am currently planning a solo 1000km cycle the length of Oman across the Dofar desert. Enjoying trying out your tips on climbing as the crux of the route involves an 800m climb. Major challenge is water, as water stops are upto 150km apart.

Oooh yeah that’s a long distance between water. Make sure you have electrolytes to help keep that water in!

The CGR is defo the more typical choice but I wanted to see how the Endurance SL would handle the gravel and longer days too. It was perfect - even on the gravel sections!

Not well at all. Honestly it doesn’t agree with me at all and I’m wheat intolerant but... when in France it’s one of the easiest and carb dense thing to buy on the bike. Meh! I don’t ever eat bread day to day but odd times on long rides and put up with the bloated tum! Ha
