When I rode the 2019 Birmingham Velo for Cure Leukaemia there was over 18,000 cyclists at the start, and yes both myself and my wife Maria were a little apprehensive, even daunted, fortunately we’d upgraded to priority start time so went off within the first hour, once we started and settled into our rhythm we were ok. However there were cyclists racing past thinking it was a timed event and going for the quickest time! 🤷‍♂️

I would think the gauze is just extra fabric to cause more chafing. Blisters are usually caused by gloves that don’t fit well. By fit, I mean gloves that are not too tight or too loose, and most importantly are the right shape for your hands. In my years of mtn biking, I actually think badly fitting gloves are worse than no gloves. Other than that, the better you get at bike handling, the less tight you actually grab the bars.

Massive credit for that. Proper impressed. Question for you - Bikes at the hotel? What was the parking like? Lot of the pro's did not wear gloves - reason being, took the friction away between the glove and hands and less likely to get blisters. They also ride with hands on the tops or drops a lot - reducing time with hands on the hoods on the cobble sectors. If you want the padding without gloves double wrap the handlebar tape is the tip you often see.

You should get an XC mountain bike, it will increase your confidence and skill when riding stuff like cobbles and reduce your anxiety knowing what you can ride on your gravel bike.

Congratulations. Never doubted that you would complete the ride Amy after completing PBP last year. It's one of the most hallowed and venerable places in cycling history. I hope you enjoyed the vibe. One key point about the ibis - where were you able to store the bikes?
