If ALL riders rode and trained the classical dressage way the world would be a better place. First lighten the front and get the horse moving in from the hind. You not only have a more comfortable ride with 4 × 4 mode, but you save all the hammering to the front legs. Once you've ridden a horse that raises it's back under you and steps way under himself from the back and doesn't stick his head up all the time, you'll never ride an unschooled horse again.

I was taught to ride with just a bareback saddle (just a pad that buckles to the horse) until I could hang on with just my knees. As everyone else is saying sticking your foot all the way in the stirrups is a good way to get drug. I’ve lost my stirrups many times on a horse that’s acting up only to ride it out and get my stirrups back.

I was riding once. Up in sky country. New rider, on vacation. I can't remember how my boots were hanging.I will never forget what happened. We started going full steam ahead. I got the hang of it. No more up and down in the saddle. Smooth as anything. I let out a happy shout. Just then, my horse started running on his front knees. He is going down fast! A scene from a cowboy movie flashed through my mind. Uh, uh, I'm not having this horse land on me! I quick pulled my boots out of the stirrups and held my knees high, the horse started tumbling head over heels to the right and I did the same to the left. I watched the horse and can still recall how he looked tumbling. We both got up, I grabbed my hat, walked over, grabbed the reins. We both walked away. He had thrown a shoe I was too sore to ride again for a week. What a memory. A Hollywood stunt man couldn't have done better!

@K A Technically with proper groundwork, when breaking in young horses there really shouldn’t be reason to buck. That and, often times when horses buck it’s because something’s wrong or they’re excited/ have energy. I’d rather not get dragged thank you. You should have the proper ability to ride without stirrups in case you need to, otherwise you shouldn’t be riding off the lunge, because crap happens. I’ve lost stirrups before, being an idiot. You can have the best of both worlds if you go with a deep Monel stirrup like a 4" - 5" deep one depending on your foot length. Then you can put your foot in as deep or shallow as you need and you won't get hung up if you get bucked off. I was always taught to put the center of the stirrup at the same point in your foot as you would a ladder rung when you climb a ladder so you are at the optimum point for both leverage and balance.

The Western heel was designed with the slant so when you have a colt on the end of a rope or lunge line that decides to head out on you, you rock back on your heels and dig in. The heel digs in the ground giving the handler a better chance of getting the situation back under control. Sometimes even that is not enough. Colts started out right usually do not put 'the heel' to the test. Phillip Hall

Just as it is with any tool they have their purposes. Believe or not, a stirrup is a tool. So, If you have a broncy horse a flat bottom stirrup may be enough but, if you have a BRONC then then the oxbow might be the tool necessary to complete the task. “Suum cuique” (to each his own). I use to break and train horses and what you do is a good way to get drug. You don't ride a green horse out by yourself you always ride with another good rider. If your horse is still bucking after a month. Either you are not putting enough miles on the horse or your not doing it right. Before you even start to break a horse out you have to make sure you have their ground manners down pat. You will find a few horses that are true screws. That will buck or rear without warning. They either had something traumatic happened to them by a person, they have learned (from inexperienced rider) that if they act bad enough they don't have to work, or they are not mentally right. Either way they are not worth getting hurt or killed by. There are way to many good horses going to the kill buyers to mess with a horse that will never be trustworthy.
@EmCrazy
@EmCrazy Жыл бұрын
I agree with the first part but I disagree with the last part. No horse "has something wrong mentally" they just need time and work. If you treat them right, without hurting them and in a safe environment you will be fine. Any horse can hurt or kill you but every horse can also be trust worthy but they need to trust you first. If they care about you they wont try to hurt you. No guarantees they wont hurt you accidentally like any other horse though. I know this cos me and my sisters used to buy horses that were abused, untrained or just naughty. Still do just without my oldest sister. I am aware that I am only 14 and other people have more experience then my and know more then me but i also know with the right training any horse can be fixed. Especially if you adjust to their needs. We had a horse that no matter what we did would be amazing for 1 of us but terrible for the other 2. We ended up selling him on thinking he isnt safe for us as it was a couple years ago and at that time we didnt hav an arena. This person was supposed to continue his training and sell him on the the right person. About 2 months later we found out she sold him. After about 6 months we found him at his forever home. He had changed owners at least 3 times in 6 months. But we learnt from that that had just needed 1 person, there couldn't be more then that. Dont know why but that's what he needed

Many years ago I learnt to ride "English" style (because I live in England!) where we use both hands on the reins pull the horses head in the direction we want it to go. Then I went to Belize in Central America. There I learned to ride "American" style where you "neck rein" by holding the reins in one hand and the horse responds to the feel of the reing on the opposite side of its neck to where you want go. Took some getting used to. I also confirm that losing a stirrup at full gallop when the horse got the bit between its teeth is a scary thing! Managed to stop it by hanging round its neck 6 inches from a thorn bush of biblical proportions!!!!! Keep your darned foot deep in the stirrup.

@Travis Ritzman I barrel race, and I can ride bareback. I’ve lost stirrups during barrel runs (to my own stupidity) where I was full on running those tight turns with my horse. I never got my stirrups back during the run if I lost them, because of my saddle lol. But I never had any issues staying in or balanced. Because I make sure to work on my balance and equitation- it’s more important than some barrel racers or just western people in general seem to realize. You should be able to ride bareback or without stirrups in case something happens, or you need to go back to basics and re-learn it. If you’re relying on the stirrups the way this man is- you’re not quite riding correctly. Keeping the stirrups that far back is barely gonna make a difference in keeping them on; and it’s also a good way to get drug. That’s why good trainers will teach the balls of the feet. Better ankle flexion, better balance, better strength, and just safer in general. Don’t use the: “well how about you do it” excuse. I’ve never roped, but I do believe I could do it. Like I said, I’ve turned barrels without stirrups to my own stupidity. Stirrups are helpful, yes. And I’d rather ride with them. But you should never ever ever rely on them. Otherwise, there’s some basics that need refreshing. (I also believe this man is being very kind hearted in this, and I believe he means the best, but he’s just gonna have to accept being a little wrong on this one. Just not a smart idea for people to copy lol).

When your toes are out that means your leg is out the horse and you are ready to bury your spurs! When your feet are forwards your leg is on and you will stay with the horse not falling on your pants pockets. And your spurs are away from the horse so you don’t spur at the wrong moment! And that's how I almost broke my leg. When I was younger, I used to ride western (just like normal arena riding but with a western saddle, we just kinda played around, running barrels, pole, we would race cars because the arena was right next to a road) and the person that owned everything (the horses we were riding, the tack, property, the arena. Basically everything we were using) kept yelling at us to keep our heels down, balls of our feet in the stirrup. One day we were being stupid and racing cars without the owner in the arena or even watching us closely, it was spring time so the horses were excited and rearing to go. I was racing a UPS truck down the arena fence when at the last couple fence post the horse started to buck (note that all her horses are mostly bombproof. they don't normally buck, she even looked at me weird when I told her what happens afterwards. She said gunner has never bucked a rider off before and even claimed that I was lying even though my friend saw what happens and someone that was walking their dog saw it. Gunner is the horse I was riding btw) and at first I was able to stay on for a couple seconds, but I felt that I was starting to fall. My feet fell out of the stirrups the instant he started bucking so the only safety line I had was the horn ( which wasn't even that big because I was using gaming saddle in him even though he is a reining horse). I fell and almost broke my leg because I didn't have the stirrups has a second safety line. I got yelled at later by the owner because I didn't have my feet fully in the stirrups and that it was my fault that I, a beginner at the time that only knew the basics, couldn't feel the signals that he was gonna buck. My parents didn't want me to quite because they put a lot of money into these "lessons". I stopped riding there some months later when the owner sold my favorite horse from under my nose ( my family had payed her money for that horse and we had everything we needed for a horse, she said that the person who bought the horse was a better fit and i didn't get her because I didn't know how to ride and i wouldnt be the right fit for her. That horse was sold to a barn as a lesson horse for children. I bought her from that barn because she started bucking kids off, I would too if my mouth was being pulled raw. All I got out of that whole experience is an awesome line of palomino quarter horses.)

And yes I would rather get bucked off than dragged, but the saddle had some sort of breakaway stirrup (idk how, I don't normally see that on western saddles). And in the situation I was in, if I had my stirrups, then I probably wouldn't have fallen off, that wasn't my first time getting bucked on. From experience, if I didn't listen to my coach, then I wouldn't have to have my parents pay A lot of money to just find out i mildly sprained my ankle. Also I ride both western and english now and I am putting my feet in correctly, i just wished that in that moment i did the wrong thing and had my feet fully in the stirrups.

English riders put the ball of their foot in the stirrup and the foot points forward in the direction the horse is traveling. When giving the horse an aid for canter, for example, then the heel is turned towards the horse’s side and pressure or a slight kick is given until the horse responds. Many English riders use special stirrups, which break away/ release if the foot is twisted as in a fall-freeing the foot, so the rider is not dragged. I’d rather be dumped than dragged. The horse will run home or stop and wait for you. My horses usually wait for me if I’ve fallen off-not all though. I like hearing your ideas-even though we might not agree. Thanks for sharing. We can all learn from each other. I live in the Northeastern USA.🇺🇸 Montana looks beautiful!💕

Riders usually resort to this error due to lack of dorsiflexion in their ankles. you need to work on mobility and practice actually sinking the weight into your heel when riding. it's actually way safer and more secure to ride on the ball of the foot, provided you can get good ankle flexion. much prefer this and feels way more secure, plus never risk getting foot caught in stirrup

We didn't have money for a saddle when I grew up so I learned to ride bareback. Now that I have a saddle, when things get hairy, I kick my feet out and don't use my stirrups, I clamp my legs around the barrel of the horse. I had a friend that got his foot hung up in the stirrup and almost was killed by getting dragged. Old-time cowboys told me they wore a pistol so they could shoot the horse if he got his foot hung up in the stirrup.

I have ridden both ways but the one thing people keep commenting on is his saddle he used to break horses. In that situation you do want your feet all the way in . You’re not breaking horses in the middle of the pasture, you’re doing that in a round pen more than likely and you’re not by yourself. Worse case scenario if you did get hung up, the horse would go 20’ or until someone else stopped him. At least that has been the way I was taught and have seen it done.

I was over at a neighbor's to round her hose up to ride. For some reason my horse started bucking. He's never done that before or since. Rattlesnake? Or touched a cactus needle, or a rock in his foot. It was a rocky hill with cactus, mesquite & cedar and rattlesnakes. I rode him all the way back to the gate and then I dove off. Her Mom had to pick gravel out, buried all in my elbow & knee. When I hit the ground my horse stopped on a dime. He put his head down and just looked at me all puzzled. "What are you doing down there"? He never did it again?? But.years later he kissed a rattlesnake. I was grown by then. They didn't think he would live. His nose swelled up so he could hardly breathe. Actually they didn't even call me about it until he lived through it.

Sure if you fall down it can be bad, but what happens if the foot gets caught and you get dragged? That’s what’s gonna happen when you’re already setting the foot up to be dragged like this. It’s going to be a way worse fall in general, and the force of getting caught will slam you down. Then you’ll get dragged. Plus, putting your feet this far into the stirrup isn’t going to do anything. It’s not going to keep you on the horse, it’s not going to keep the stirrup on you if you’re riding badly enough that you need to hold your stirrup on your foot like this, it’s not going to do anything. It’s just going to worsen your balance, prove your level of riding skills, increase chance for large injury, or nothing at all. Like literally nothing.

As an English rider I partly disagree with this. We do alot of no stirrup training for a reason you should not have to relay on your stirrups or even your saddle to stay on. Also if you do come out of the saddle but your feet are still in the stirrups you can get dragged by your horse which is alot worse than just falling off.

A lot of people getting salty about having a foot all in...every bronc rider keeps his foot all in or hits the dirt. For the rest of us, shorten your stirrups so you have more bend in your legs, when you take the weight off your foot, they come out almost too easy. Cutters ride narrow stirrups with plenty of leg bend and those horses are athletes, not trail nags. Most people are reaching for their pedals to begin with and catch a toe just trying to get off at a standstill.

Ok this all makes sense for western. But I think with English it’s best to stick with keeping stirrups at the ball of your foot. Just because it’s easier to lift yourself out of the saddle for posting, two point, and half seat. But with western you don’t really do that, so it’s not as much of a necessity to keep your stirrups at the ball of your foot.
