@@alexbinion614 Once I got to the point of being advanced enough to have the knowledge and skill to help beginners (so since about my 6th year of riding - I rode mostly on and off until my 8th year), I've always loved it - in college, that meant helping my classmates the first year and my friends in the classes below me the other three years. Worked at a couple camps with horses during college, and thoroughly enjoyed helping teach the kids how to ride. Loved helping beginners so much that, after college, I went through certification to become an instructor myself.

i want to start riding but don’t know where to start, should i start with horse camp or should i start lessons then horse camp? are people mean at horse camp?
@SnowySpiritRuby3 жыл бұрын
@@adly_m6307 The kids and instructors were nice at the camp I went to all 3 years I went (it was a Christian camp, so that may have had something to do with it, but I don't know for sure), as they also were where I took lessons for 6 years (okay, scratch that - there was one particular person at that stable, not a kid, who wasn't very nice to me, but she was the only one who wasn't and she and I were almost never there at the same time); I think whether they're nice or not really depends on the camp. As for lessons before camp or vice versa, I think that's honestly a personal choice and based on what you can afford and what's available to you. I know lots of people who started at camp and then switched to lessons (me included), as well as people who started at lessons and also went to camp. Most camps in my experience (I went to one and worked at two others, so my experience is limited, but based on what I've learned over the last 10 years, a lot of camps appear to be similar to those with regards to how the riding program is run) are designed to cater primarily to the beginner rider, who has never ridden a horse before, but many also divide campers up into different groups based on skill level and experience. I know some riding stables require you to have your own horse (whether owned, leased, borrowed, or some other arrangement), while others provide the horses. For lessons (depending on the program), there's a good chance you'll get more riding time, but that varies from one to the next as well (my third year of camp, I think we had more riding time in a day than I did when I did lessons), and often in riding lessons (again, depending on the stable) you're more likely to be responsible for catching, grooming, and tacking and untacking, while camps will often have the horses already tacked up and ready to ride when you get to the barn, at least for less experienced riders. Honestly, the best advice I can give is do your research on the camps and riding lesson programs that are available to you, taking into account things that would likely be important factors (for example, price, lesson length, class size, distance you would have to drive to get there and how often you would have to drive it, whether the classes are divided up by skill level, whether you are required to provide your own horse, what time(s) of year the camp or lessons are offered, any age restriction (if applicable), etc. - I'm in the process of setting up my own lesson program, so these are all factors I've recently had to consider and make decisions about), and make your decision based on that. Hope that helps at least a little bit, because honestly that's about all I can really say - it really does ultimately come down to personal preference and what is available to you.

And then Tory (the annoying know it all) was cantering on the lunge line but apparently she has riding for 8 years and she still cant canter on her own when she literally said before we got on that she loves to canter and that's the best "mode". So I'm currently teaching someone in horse camp (its taught by older teenagers (I'm 17) when the instructor double books herself) and she's riding one of the lesson horses who used to be a 2D barrel horse. We've been working on getting her slow and showing her that slow is the key to being a lesson horse. Anyways, I'm one of her main riders and I've done most of her training to get her here. The girl that I'm teaching, let's call her Karen, she tells me how she wants to canter and gallop her in the arena. Now, keep in mind that this is an ex barrel horse who we've turned into a calm, beginner lesson horse, but it is so easy for this horse to revert to her old self. I tell the girl 'no' and she tells her mom what I said, so then the mom talks to the lead instructor/owner of the barn and she tells me that I should at least let the girl try to do it. So I did today otherwise I wouldn't be paid for my time. And this girl just takes off galloping around the arena, has no care for the other slower lesson horses teaching other kids, and nearly runs her into the fence. This mare is 25 and can't handle a serious injury. I'm a drill rider and I lease her. Now she's basically out for the entire week and there's no other horse for me to ride since it's a big team. Don't know if'll be charged for vet bills or the girl's parents will, since I'm fully leasing the horse.
@GypsyEquestrian4 жыл бұрын
OH my goodness! That is simply the worst. I have never been in your position but that is just not okay. I personally feel like you should be able to say NO to whoever or whatever if you are full leasing the horse. She needs to 100% pay for whatever damage. Also, maybe you could drop her as a student? Have you watched Free Rein? That show BUGS the heck out of me because the main character, Zoe, is a total beginner and directly disobeys her instructors and the barn rules and takes off cantering a "crazy" horse. I think some people like "Karen" see those examples and think "oh I could do that!" 🙄 I am so protective of my horse and will not let anyone who has that sort of attitude EVER ride. Anyways... I'm done ranting. I am SO sorry that you are in the position that you are in. I hope your barn manager will see that letting "Karen" get her way while going against her Riding Instructors (your) advice was a bad idea. Some people need to learn that patience is key and you don't always get to go from level 1 to level 20 overnight. There is no instant gratification with horses. If she expects that, she should find a new sport! Good luck Anna! Hope your horse feels better soon 💜

Dear equestrians, please remember, you were a beginner once to. Stop acting like you weren't. Theres nothing wrong with learning. Keep that in mind, those of you who just love to insult new equestrians.

This is exactly why all campers start off on a lead line for at least the first day and never bridle. Sometimes they get to saddle and most are independent buy the end of the week.
