the reason why it's safer to be in a car/truck during a lightning storm is because it acts as a faraday cage which means the lightning goes around the outside surface instead of punching through thanks to how metal conducts lightning. there are things called faraday suits which are what people use for working on telephone poles and such. it is the faraday cage effect of the car/truck that protects you from lightning, not the rubber of the tires. and is also impossible for lightning to hit you inside a car/truck unless you were to have your elbow or hand touching the exterior metal on the door.

Big fan of your videos...I'm not a truck driver per se, I drive a Greyhound Bus from Northern Ca to Portland Or. My cargo talks back to me. Speaking of lightening, last March I had a direct lightening strike on my bus. Fried and melted the battery cables and started a wiring fire. An interesting day for sure.

Lighting can strike a person but if your in the truck and the truck is hit your still good, the rubber is an insulator from the truck being grounded so electricity can not travel through the truck into the ground

@williamseahorn34463 жыл бұрын
You are perfectly safe in a hard top vehicle. The tires is a myth. The metal vehicle acts as a Faraday cage which discharges the electrical charge around you to the ground.
@gudfarfar2 жыл бұрын
Your best chance in a lightning storm is inside your car or truck, as it works as a Faraday Cage and any strike will just be led to the ground and not tough anything inside the vehicle. In your house the chance are a bit higher to get a lightning event, unless you have a proper lightning rod on your roof attached to a ground wire connected to a proper earth anchor rod or such. But chances are still slim to get hit.

Its not really the tires that protects a car during a lightning storm. The car acts as a Faraday cage. The lighting is much more likely to travel through the metal frame than through you. As long as you don't touch any metal near the frame, the worst that will normally happen is the thunder will cause your ears to ring.
