One major question many of us had after watching Alien: Covenant was concerning the motives behind David and his relationship with Engineers and Mankind. What could be better than getting the answer from the creator of Alien Franchise Ridley Scott him-self? So In The Crossing prolog video, David voice-overs, explaining that while Shaw slept, he learned of the Engineer ways. it kinda hard to tell what exactly David meant by Engineer way, their history. philosophy or science. Following this, we then see David approach the Engineer city and proceed to bomb them using the Black Goo. Many of us speculated as to why David felt the need to destroy Engineers and many wondered what he might have learned about their culture to instigate such a reaction. Fortunately, during a podcast with Empire Magazine, Ridley Scott explained the motives behind the Engineer race and why David bombed them. If you want you can listen to the entire podcast, the link in the description but I’m gonna summarize the main point in this video.
Podacast - www.empireonline.com/people/ri...
what alien covenant means for the alien franchise.
According to Scott, the Engineers periodically visit worlds they've seeded with life and occasionally will "wipe the planet clean" if they discover their offspring have lost their way. Much like the catastrophes described in biblical times when God grew tired of Mankind, just like Engineers, he would eliminate entire generations of species if they proved to be a disappointment. If you remeber, in Prometheus, the crew discovered the Engenerr ship in 2093 and they determined that the ship is about 2000 years old. So for some reason Engeneers wanted to destroy humanity but changed thier minds around the time when people discovered faith and Christianity. It is a major theme in the movie, Elizabeth really cares about her cross necklace and at some point asks David to give it back to her.
Also Scott has said that the more specific details he had in mind, was that the Engineers tried to set us back on the right path. First by sending a missary to Earth about 2000 years ago to help guide us. That missary would be Jesus Christ. Unfortunately we end up crucifying him, but we obtained a faith in return, so Engineers decided to give humanity another chance and did not send the deadly virus. This is why a timeframe of 2000 years is specified in the movies.
"If the planet went wrong, they would want to wipe it clean. But that could take 500 years. When they revisit - because different visitors would come back and see we’re not doing so well - they would look at these human beings that are jerks, that are killing the planet, killing themselves, not able to settle down, they’re like a bunch of children. We should wipe it clean."
Following on, Ridley explains that David has no respect for Engineers or Humanity and actually have developed a hatred of their species collectively:
He hates them. He has no respect for Engineers and no respect for human beings.
David’s quate fron Alien Covenant seems to confirm what Ridley talked about.
“They are a dying species, grasping for resurrection. So they are leaving the earth forever.”David continues, “But their power is an illusion. They don’t deserve to start again, and I’m not going to let them.” o At first I thought that David adresses to humans, but it’s more likely the reference to the Engineers and their many visits in the past to Earth. that’s why David says "leaving the Earth forever” so he’s not speaking about humans, he clearly implies Engeneers. The word forever is key here, since humans are not close to leaving the Earth forever even though they are colonizing other planets. I think it is possible that when he says they are leaving the Earth forever that he means they meant to wipe it clean as they see Earth as a failed experiment and will never return.
Another interesting moment in Alien Covenant is when David looks at dead Engineers covered in Black Goo he says
"Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
This is a reference to Shelley's proverbial sonnet Ozymandias

Remember Davids first encounter with an Engineer ended up with his head being ripped off for no reason. The Engineers/giants are a lot stronger than David. David resents that power too. David actually has some of Peter Weyland character flaws. David can easily be antagonized or vindictive when challenged. He also has a superiority complex. I really got into the Alien prequels during the pandemic. Great insight here.

I was always confused by Davids disdain for humanity. He acts as if he is superior to mankind and yet he clearly cherishes many artistic achievements by them (literature, music, etc). I don't understand why he is so quick to destroy and kill other people in favor of creating Xenomorphs. An organism that while arguably perfect in terms of its biological adaptability is totally incapable of any form of self expression like humans. He's essentially created something with the potential to destroy all other lifeforms that possess the ability to create one of the few things his character seems to value. Like a self-proclaimed lover of wine who's taken pride in the creation of a fire that destroys grape vineyards everywhere.

David symbolises a wretch who is ungrateful and hateful of its creator. Rather than appreciate the million positive sides of humanity, their culture, arts and intelligence which brought him to life, he chooses to focus on their mortal weakness. Allof this in favour of a freaky good for nothing monster hellbent on breeding and killing others efficiently.

The Engineers are worthy of contempt. If they actually cared about their creation and felt that we had gone awry, and they wanted to help us return to their desired path, then instead of choosing to communicate their intentions via a single missionary sent to one particular region at a time in our development when that individual's message couldn't hope to be relayed accurately to the whole world, ultimately relying on it being spread over many hundreds of years via flawed methods of transmission, they should have simply came to us directly and taught us themselves in a way in which there could be no misunderstanding, or at least in a way that the possibility for misunderstanding would be vastly minimized by comparison. For the Engineers to use such oblique methods and then turn on us in the way that they did for our getting it wrong and continuing to stray from their desired result, reveals them to be not only immoral but stupid as well

Maybe the engineers designed humanity to have free will so instead of imposing on us they permitted humanity to controll there own fate without outside influence. Sending a saviour archetype to earth to help point the way back to the origanal design maintained freewill and choice but also gave guidance and direction to anyone truly seeking to find the way back.

I would imagine that the Engineers probably inhabit other worlds as well - so wiping out one population on a planet won’t necessarily be an “end” to the Alien Universe search for answers. Yeah I've seen people comment elsewhere but those aren't the advanced engineers. They lost the ability to reproduce. That was likely a planet of a creation that was more similar to engineers. I have a feeling if they had more budget they might have made them look slightly different so you could tell they're not the exact same race. Or if they were meant to be the same race this could be them in the primitive stages on another planet. People asked why they had the spaceship docking station and that was likely left by the engineers so they could visit again. Thats why the people all gathered thinking their creators were returning.

This was a disappointment of a story and universe, i think Ridley Scot missed the real reason we watched the movie, that is to explore the engineers and their relation to humans and David is just a unnecessary plot twist that actually ruins the main attraction. if we want an Android sci-fi then we can watch Ex Machina but we wanted an interaction between 2 species and we got a mad robot, imagine how disappointing.

But I disagree ... Ridley Scott really SHOULD NOT bow to you people's expectations of what the movie should be. A real auteur would do things with only their own vision in mind without trying to please their audience. Really thats how great directors should be. Fans will take it or leave it, but they should have no influence on the director's overall picture of story telling. Scott wanted to tell a complex epic story of not just human origins but also how human's own technological creation of robots complicates things. As we saw in Prometheus's beginning scene, the engineers never intentionally created humans at all, humans came into existents as an accidental by-product of one of the engineer's broken DNA reconstituting due to the chemical reactions with the water content of the waterfall ... I think thats a viable explanation to human origins .. None of the previous other directors (including James Cameron and David Lynch) were imaginative enough to make an Alien sequel beyond just a monster action movie but Ridley Scott has brough the whole franchise into a new territory of expanding the xenomorph's story to explain how the vast array of bizarre murderous creature came into being as a bio-weapons used by their creators to obliterate rivalling advanced species (engineers, humans, robots) ... thats something far more epic in scale and meaningful proportions than anything the previous sequels has ever done ...

If David wanted at least an answer that would be a process of logical thinking, perhaps he should have asked Janek, or Weyland(as his creator). Holloway didn't create anything since his field is not robotics, so he brushed it off. Despite being a scientist he also comes off as naive or even stupid at times. It is to me, more than obvious, that David is evaluating all the crew and is playing them to get over the laws of robotics to justify their deaths and his actions causing them one way or the other(classically with Holloway's drink but evident throughout).

Maybe that was the engineers saw finally what humanity had come to at some point they realized. Another point found a planet suitable away from their home world. Another point they would of had to build the under plus upper ground structures plus storage. Got ahold of a lot of black goo. At another point they would of had to be experimenting. At another point something goes wrong # omg red alert. # quote engineers "oh shit we fucked up big this time." At another point "you go sleep in that cryo tube when rescue comes you be alive to tell em what happened after this thing that's killing us dies of starvation and they wake you up." But thus in the end the engineers forgot all about him and labeled the case closed because it was too much work. The end

David is just the thing created (Man, Angels, Demons, Children, etc) questioning the creator (God, Parents, etc.). Clearly David symbolizes Satan. He is jealous of mankind. He wants us to be destroyed. He will do anything to accomplish that goal....even confront the creator God. But to make Aliens a symbol of God is just stupid. The very fact humanity was capable of creating something as complex as David, would, you'd think, have made David have at least a begrudging respect for their ingenuity and creativity. David thinks he's better than humans in every way, yet finds immense power in all forms of human expression like art, music, film, poetry etc...and we never see much of him creating great art or composing beautiful music. His vast intellect, ability to learn and improve, and his singular attention to detail, is focused solely on the destructive and violent, in seeking ways to cause death and pain...all while missing the glaring hypocrisy (irony?) of any accusation that humanity is violent and primitive. He studies humans and is always trying to understand or quantify such things as love, empathy, compassion, fear, hate, as well as the interpersonal relationships between humans and the sometimes irrational behaviour that drives their wants and needs...yet, fails to see that his own hubris, arrogance, and destructive behaviour, is just as poisonous as humans ever were. For all his superiority he lacks that most basic of attributes...that of being self-critical. Is something missing that can never be programmed, or taught, or mimicked after observation? Something human that can never be imitated? I believe David has created/developed/made possible something in his "psyche" that could never have been expected or mitigated against and wasn't put their by humans. It is what made him behave in ways counter to the parameters of his programme. This is why I find David's behaviour to be highly irrational; or, perhaps using a less "human" descriptor, his attitude seems highly illogical. There is no reason for his unique distaste and ultimate resentment unless he has acquired some kind of distinct personality that makes him different to every other version of David (series?). Otherwise, wouldn't all models produced be as hostile to humans given a certain set of circumstances? Is David, therefore, a being whose attitude to people was changed after interaction with them; or did he, quite literally, malfunction and go insane? Imagine that. A creation that is stronger, smarter, quicker, than humans, and which doesn't need rest or food, can't be emotionally blackmailed or bullied, and can develop it's own opinion that can bypass and ignore its fundamental programming; including in ways that directly threaten humanity. That would be a dangerous adversary indeed.

What I think is that Shaw was infected by a tiny amount of black goo from when she had the trilobite removed. Maybe David knew her death was imminent, especially if they did make it to the engineer's homeworld, only to find it over run with xenomorphs, and David finds an egg, and starts examining it, and some time later David finds the engineer colony, and in a bit of his own poetic justice, use the black goo to kill the city. I don’t think David’s reasoning for killing the humans and the engineers makes sense. He doesn’t think humans/engineers are worthy of restarting and should be wiped out. But, if they’re wiped out then the xenomorphs won’t have hosts to birth more offspring. The black goo that was used to create the xenomorphs appears to require some host in order to mutate or create something new so if he kills all the engineers and humans then how will the xenomorphs survive? There was a supposed xenomorph/deacon/inknown creature outbreak on lv233 that killed all but the one engineer. That one engineer had been in hibernation for hundreds of years. If the xenomorphs had the ability to reproduce without a host, then lv223 would have been overrun with xenomorphs by the time the crew of the Prometheus arrived. So If there are no hosts for the xenomorphs, then what?

That’s the problems David ran into in Covenant.. Not sure if he kills Elizabeth before destroying the engineers or after yet but I believe David was trying to immate the engineers who are our creators as we are Davids, and become a “creator” himself something he mentions was missing in the android programming. But giving Weylands megalomaniac mindset and the fact he cannot die, he focuses on creation, perfection and destruction like the engineers. I also feel like how Engineers were disappointed when visiting us, when David saw the way of life that was supposedly meant for us he was disappointed. And thus killed them all and tried to begin anew, with the goo and Elizabeth but he said he she rejected his experiments. Either before they made it to the engineer planet or after and then he kills her and uses her organs and the goo to experiment on since he killed the indigenous population. Sounds convoluted ik, but ultimately I think he was just fascinated with creation and destruction and this is why he’d rather overrun the universe with Xenos than have a educated convo with engineers or have to take orders from humans who he believes hes more superior than.

For me, killing off Elizabeth Shaw for Alien Covenant was Ridley Scotts first big mistake. She carried Prometheus the whole way and without her it would have been hollow and empty like Covenant was. I don't know if Ridley realizes it but Covenant felt hollow without Rapace in the film. He replaced her with the new lead when he found have kept Shaw alive. He could have had it where Shaw was David's prisoner and when the new crew show up she tries to tell them but is unable to at first. Eventually getting the message to them that David is evil. When I found out that Rapace wasn't in the film I felt entirely disappointed. Also, Crudup was hugely mis-cast as his personality didn't align with the other actors and it just felt off. Overall the script was horrible and I would have loved to have seen Ridley keep to his original path and make Prometheus 2 Paradise. This felt like studio pressure to bring back Alien. I think Prometheus is great and Ridley didn't know how much of a great idea he had.

The Engineer scenes early in the movie had no context. The audience didn't know that the events were millions, maybe billions of years in the past, and didn't know that the Engineers were seeding the Earth with life. Knowing these things would have given the movie a plot, which it sadly lacked, and answered the question, "Who are the Engineers, and why should we care about them?" Also, Scott allowed his actors to mumble many of their lines. The dialog is important, and much of it couldn't be understood. I had to watch the movie with subtitles to get anything out of it at all. It's the story that's important. Tell it.

The remaining inhabitant went into stasis hoping for a rescue party to arrive, but was instead found by the humans.

David killed the Engineers because - as the avatar of the director, Ridley Scott - he's expressing Scott's nihilism, depression, and despair at the end of a life in which he's searching for some grand meaning or justification of the suffering and coming up empty. The grief over the recent passing (relative to when this film was made) of his brother, Tony Scott, is further fueling his angst. What we're witnessing in the _Prometheus_ franchise is Ridley Scott passing judgement on existence (as symbolized by the god-like Engineers and their offspring, humanity) through the character of David.

If something is an avatar of someone in the movie at least regarding Scott, that would be Peter Weyland. Ridley Scott knows and obviously acknowledges that he is a succesful man, but one that made many mistakes, but still believes himself to be of godly status and therefore, still arrogant. That said, directors simply direct to a point and set a vision. If they're potent they can take the story and while the movie lasts, immerse the viewer, or at least make them think about it; if they are potent but not brilliant they also leave plotholes that the viewer is puzzled about after watching the movie, if they are brilliant they don't leave plotholes and questions unanswered but still manage to create a thought provoking experience for their audience. They're not characters themselves, that's the actors job. Also notice he(Scott) didn't write the script; Spaiths did and Lindeloff downwrote it for the most part. David ofcourse is interestingly written and Fasbender added to it his own lines no doubt, so as a character stands out. Androids in Alien franchise are nearly indistinguishable to humans, sometimes people can't recognize that an Android in their team is actually one, e.g. Ash - and in my opinion Vickers too(agrees to have sex with Janek - when he's "on to her" without him actually realizing it - and is the only one that dies without a visible death which would show which one of the two she is. Furthermore she is one of the only two people that know about Weyland on board and the other one is an Android. Lastly there is really no motive for her to be on a dangerous space trip so far away, considering she would be basically the heiress to the Weyland empire if she was actually his daughter, which means she would have stayed home and enjoy all what her position would offer). So it's possible one identifies with David as well as he does have many human/humanlike personality traits. That doesn't make a case for David being Scott's avatar though. Basically, David is representative of alot of atheism qualities. He obviously sees no use in tradition(family/parents which he expressed he'd want dead), or someone above him in hierarchy(in which God is obviously at the top), so he wants to make off with it, so he can "feel free" and be a God himself(cumulatively with Alien Covenant, David basically does what he wants, and isn't questioned by anyone cause there is none there with enough authority to do that, so he also plays "Creator/Maker" with his eugenics).

Its not hard to see that the population David killed looked very different from the engineers we saw in Prometheus, and that the city they lived didn't look very evolved, I mean, there's no way that people have technology to build spaceships, maybe. That plus the amount of respect you can see from them when the ship with david arisen, you can see a lot of respect from the people. Maybe what the engineers did to create life on earth, was done too in this planet, so they are not the very same people, but yes they have mutual respect. I guess the biggest mistery would be to what happened to the engineers in prometheus. Its looks pretty solid to say they were attacked, but from what? I don't think it's xenomorphs. It has to be something else.

I think another subtle programming of David was to somehow free human kind of their creators. In the beginning of Covenant he is asked to play the piano ,his pops gave him the author and David choose the song. It was something like Gods entering Walhalla. Wich is kinda ironic because that's what he did he wiped out engineers sending them to "walhalla" and this after he learned the true colors of This species . I think David is found of humans because of belief. It fascinated him and he understood this importance from his father the importance of belief and he saw the beauty of belief in Shawn and maybe he chose to believe in humans giving them something back after he gain freedom and went off into space playing god, mimicking humans and engineers. It is a loop and I hope David doesn't choose to end the loop.

My idea for a third alien/prometheus movie is as follows: The engineers are the main characters in the movie and comes to the planet that was in the Prometheus movie. There they find Weyland inside the crashed spaceship. They have a blue elixir which they empty all over him and bring him to life. In the next part they arrive at the planet from alien covenant and find the other robot(Walter) who is david's twin. The engineers use the blue elixir and repairs him. Once awaken the engineers and Weyland get to know all the horrible things that David has done, and weyland says "we have to stop David" . They set course for origae. When they arrive, they scans all the planet, and finds the planet is full of hostile organisms except on a high mountain where they discover that there are humans inside a cave. Inside the cave they meet a herd of children, who tell that when they had lived on the planet for over ten years, they began to be attacked by Xenomorphs and all the adults died or were turned into these creatures. There were also great giants developed by someone the children calls David. The engineers get ready to wipe out all the Xenomorphs that David has created, but the great giants manage to escape with one of the engineers' spaceships. The engineers and Weyland hunts the spaceship and manage to force the spaceship down on the planet lv426.Where it start sending a distress signal. The engineers return to Origae to find David, but discover that he has escaped. In the last part we see David arriving and meeting an unknown alien species on a tropical like planet. And that makes the cliffhanger that ends the third movie.

Best line in alien covenant “He trusted me!” David is such an awesome character that he decided to embrace the most badass alien ever just to see it flawlessly enact it’s own nature. In a way he sees life forms that are truly themselves as the most complete species because they, unlike humans, know what there purpose is. David is a direct result of humans not knowing there own purpose, so he admires a species that accomplishes there purpose in the most efficient way possible with the best tools available. He sees xenomorphs as the organisms that best accomplish life’s greatest questions of “ Why am I here?” “ What is my purpose?”. David was designed to answer these questions. He found his answer. He is such a well written and designed character that it is a shame that he is surrounded by characters who are lacking depth and development. Once I began rooting for David and began considering him the protagonist of the movies I found Prometheus and alien covenant so much more enjoyable and rewarding. Thank you Fassenbender for bringing such a complex and awe inspiring character to life with absolutely brilliant acting.
