" Shugemery " is name of a U-tube channel that best for hammock advise. He is a retired circus clown that loves to backpack and hammock camp. Yes you can side sleep in a hammock, just need it adjusted right. Shug reviews different setups and hammocks and gives out loads of non-sponsered good advise. Highly recommend him if nothing but for the good chuckle and smile i have after watching him.

The first night I have a very hard time in my hammock as well; although I use the large Hennessey and can sleep on the side if I'm diagonal enough. From the 2nd night onwards I sleep the whole night through, by then even on my back, which I never do otherwise. Then back home for 2-3 weeks and I have to reset again with a restless night in the hammock.

I cannot sleep on my back at all and on top of that I toss and turn from one side to the other all night. I’m right at 6’ and about 264 lbs. Really enjoy a night in the Blackbird XLT much better than even a cot with a air mattress in my 10x10 Cabela’s lodge tent. Everyone’s has different back problems but do whatever works for you. Just going over some of your back videos and came across this one. I quite like the Idea of Hammock camping, like you I like to sleep on my side, there is a hammock made by Haven that will allow you to sleep in any position you like it, it might be worth having a look. That paired with the Lone Wolf I think would be the perfect match.

I can sleep on my side in my hammock. It is all in the hang angle. You want to have a little slack in the hammock. Then lay in the hammock at an angle to the hammock connection points. This will allow you to lay on your side. You also want to look up, "structural Ridgeline." It's the Ridgeline that really helps.

Cracking video Richard, as a hammock camper, that tarp looks awesome, especially using the woodstove 👌, sometimes, depending on the size of your hammock, you can feel bunched up, calf ache, especially if laying on your back, I don't have a dd hammock, but all mine are 3x2 mtr hammocks, I can get a diagonal lay, laying on my back is bliss (I have spinal injuries), but I can also lay on my sides, with the diagonal lay, if you look up a book 'The ultimate hang', a brilliant book, that I'm sure will help you, that food was amazing, 5 chops!, lol, really enjoy your videos, good health and safe travels my friend, cheers craig

Great quality video. I appreciate all that you do. But, between the hot tarp and that Titanium stove, you're right at US $1000. That's way out of my ballpark. I can dream of it for some day! Also, I wish you'd have mentioned the specs on that tarp as well. You undoubtedly parked very near your camping site. The hot tarp is 12 lbs! Your underquilt and top quilt appeared to be filled with down as well. You're a blessed man to have the top of the line gear. All in all, I'll bet the price of all your gear is pushing US $3000. I'm not criticizing. Again, your videos are top notch. But watching your videos is like watching a Victoria's Secret fashion show. I see a whole bunch of something I covet but have no prayer of possessing. Be well!

Hi Floyd. I’m sorry you feel that way about my videos. It’s not my intent to make you jealous in any way - purely to share my love of the outdoors. Everything is relative. Should I write to Top Gear and ask them to refrain from reviewing anything from the Ferrari collection? Should I write to the latest property program and ask them to stick to houses with less than 3 beds? I have been given a fair amount of the kit I use as gifts - case in point; my underquilt was a handmade gift from a good friend. I’d just sit back and enjoy the content in the spirit is offered. All the best Richard. PS. It wasn’t a review and I left the Pomoly site address in the description box so people could get the specs from there.

Got a hammock stand at home to get used to it - there my hammock hangs not that high but about 140 cm off ground at both ends - when sitting in it it‘s about 45 cm height with feet on ground. Sleeping on my side I do need the width of the hammock not less than 140 cm (I’m 165 cm / about 62 kg) and NO pillow. Avoiding the „banana position“ but „diagonal“ with head placed on the nearby side of the hammock to my nose and feet opposite (often a bit „outside“). Looks like it works meanwhile since I don’t have any problems with my back anymore - I had before in a „regular bed“ 😁 🤔 Guess your problems are caused by an inappropriate setup of the hammock and not by „the hammock itself“ 😉 Maybe you want to try different setups at home during daytime to find your comfy one ☺️

I can side sleep in a hammock, it's just about spending time setting it up and using a ridge line for me. Perhaps check out Shug, he was one of the guys I watched when I first started playing with hammocks and I'm naturally a side sleeper. The ridge line (whoopie sling) allows you to have slack in the hammock so you can go diagonal without the banana hammock effect. This is Shug and it shows a few versions of side sleeping kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXm3iWd7Z5h_h9k I hope it helps.

No idea if this is useful in a camping hammock. I did some travelling in Brazil in the '80s . On boats on the Amazon and in many hostels you are expected to sling your own hammock. I discovered that one does not sleep aligned with the long axis of the fabric - but at an angle to it - maybe 30 degrees. In the hammock I had that made the sleeping position virtually flat rather than banana shaped, and meant that one could sleep in a side position.

I can solve a great deal of your sleeping problem. Just put a stick on the head end from side to side or horizontal and one at the other side. This way your bed wil flatten out really nice. And you wil be able to sleep on your side. If you have the right tension on the hammock. You could also put a wool blanket in the middle of the hammock and make it even more strait. There are more things you can do. Like y loop the hammock strings and tie your hammock between 4 trees instead of two. Greetings,, Kitty.

Yummy, I’ve not slept much in a hammock , only a couple of times using one supplied by my nephew, I think I prefer sleeping on the ground with a stuffed poncho as a mattress or better still a wooden framed bushcraft cot ( I’m no expert) have a frame set up in my “permission woodland” tarp over, very comfortable. Got the idea from “Corporals Corner”, certainly not a new concept.

Great Video Richard, thanks for sharing it. You'have probably read all the sleeping suggestions by now, (sorry, bit late in watching this one) but I'm a side sleeper and love my hammock. I also have a DD Frontline. I do need to susspend it quite tightly with very little sag. Sleep slightly on the diagonal and often manage 6 or 7 hours of sleep, natural nightime call of nature in there too! The ultimate hange is a great book, but my advice would be to try different setup tensions. The less sag the better for me anyway. Let me know if my suggestion works for you, I'd be pleased to hear back. Many thanks, all the best. Paul.

Great 'Richard' video again. Love the intentional mistakes you do, this episode, melting the welly. Have you seen the Draumr 5.0 hammock? They are a perpendicular hammock, but look really good. May be worth a look.

Have you tried a bridge hammock, Richard? You should be able to get completely flat meaning you can sleep on your side. I'm a side sleeper too, and if I were to buy a hammock, it would be a bridge for sure!

Great video Richard. I really like your permission next to the stream, brilliant spot. The tarp looks really good and with the titanium Woodburner makes for a cosy shelter. Cheers
