Hi Steven, looks like what you're dealing with there isn't biodiesel but microbial growth! When the filters look like someone's been blowing their nose in it (all snotty and stringy), that's the telltale of little bacteria that live in the water and actually eat the diesel itself. Could be contamination from the oil truck or just not draining the oil tank regularly for water/contaminants. You can ask the customer how long ago it was they've drained the tank for water that may be sitting in the sump, but the best stuff that we use in aviation to prevent growth is called Biobor. Put some of that in the oil tank and you won't have any more problems with gooping up the filters and pumps like that.
@dermitdrApe Жыл бұрын
true that. bio diesel i pretty a pretty good way to keep sluggish growth out of your system, be it car or a heating system. microbials, though, like diesel and heating oil - althoug it seems inplausible, i agree, haha. Biodiesel might be bad for some older types of seals and fuck up your systems like that, but it will rather inhibit microbial growth than support it. Its much better as a cleaning agent/solvent than diesel oil as well, by the way!

Biodiesel blended into petroleum refined diesel fuel is increasing the incidence fuel filter clogging. Diesel fuels blended with biodiesel are at risk for potential filter blockage. Sterol glucosides and bacteria in the fuel can cause the filter blockage.

I think they started using biodiesel out here west of Worcester over 3 years ago, possibly even longer. Forgot where I read about it - might have been some oil company's website. Ever since I've had nothing but trouble with my Beckett failing to light occasionally. I used to neglect it for a long time, and it would be fine, but now I've got to be on it every single year or else it screws up. I heat with coal, too! Only use oil for hot water. A tank lasts me a year or more. Glad the truck is working out great! 👍👍

Used vegetable oil on top of it all ! Just like ethanol, less BTU's are produced which means less value at the cash register, more cost for less performance. It's the Government's core method of thinking.

I delivered oil for charlton oil and sk smith. Charlton oil is using as much biodiesel as the trucks can pump. Sometimes the truck wouldnt pump and id have to come back and add this stuff to dilute the bio so it would pump. Ck smith is 20%. Pioneer none. Als oil none. Leblanc oil none. Peterson 80%. Rule of thumb is if the oil company has nice new trucks, they are using bio diesel.

When I was making biodiesel, it came out to be about $2 / gal... You need about 20% methanol by volume, and some sodium hydroxide. I understand that methanol has gone up, like most other fuel, but if you *can* find a source of used oil, it might make sense... Course you gotta buy the equipment, and like they say, time is money... Biodiesel *does* cause rubber seals to swell, so it's better if you're using some of the modern blends, not just plain buna-n.

The bone heads in BC Canada started using Bio diesel on their ferry fleet. The problem with that was some of the equipment running on that fuel did not have the required heaters in the fuel tanks or the fuel systems. One of the older ferries kept been taken out of service because the required equipment needed to sail safely namely the emergency generator would not run. It was determined that they needed to upgrade the fuel system to make it right but the funding was not available. These brain trusts in charge refused to go back to regular diesel since it was not green. The people that ferry serviced were not their first priority as this route was suffering a 85% service factor and 15% missed sailings.

Biodiesel has been in our area (Cape & Islands) for at least eight years. Outside oil tanks gel up faster in the winter. Increasing the oil line to 1/2" can help some, but it's not guaranteed. Also, some burners have issues with biodiesel. It doesn't atomize like regular heating oil and can cause flameouts and other mystery problems. Riellos seem to have it happen more than others.

Steve, you may be right on the biodiesel. However, as for ethanol! Ethanol has been in gasoline since we started using lead-free gasoline. Some fuels as much as 15%. I have used E-85 in my 2011 exclusively and have had no problem. As a mechanic, cleaning carburetors and fuel injectors with ethanol products are normal. It doesn't get the fuel mileage, but you do get more horse power. But when gasoline is more expensive and sometimes E-85 is half the price of gasoline, who cares about 5 miles less per mile. Also, next time you buy carburetor cleaners, check the ingredients in the fuel injector cleaner it is high in ethanol.
@brianburns7211 Жыл бұрын
My last truck was E85. I was driving 150 miles to work twice a week. I figured out my mileage and cost per gallon. Even though the E85 was considerably cheaper, the reduced mileage made it more expensive to run E85 than regular.
@Garth2011 Жыл бұрын
Gasoline vs ethanol is night and day from each other in reference to "power". The BTU's put out by gas is much higher than ethanol which is why E is cheaper at the pump. Most of the ethanol problems are a result of moisture/water contamination and in some cases, with small engines such as motorcycles, ATV's, lawn mowers, chainsaws etc., algae forms as a result of the moisture and not using them often. That's why a lot of folks buy the fuel additives to help slow down the breakdown of E and other issues it creates in carbs with tiny orifices, air jets etc. Most fuel injected engines don't have this problem as their fuel systems are sealed so the air won't allow growth of algae however, after a good 2 to 6 months, E fuel is very stale. Also, vehicles made before 2001 arent equipped with the right "rubber" seals/O rings/gaskets and they are therefore destroyed by the ethanol over time.
