Changing the pump on a Riello Rdb Burner is quite easy to do. I changed this pump on the bench and tested the burner afterwards.
All you need is a flat head screw driver a 12 mm spanner a 15 Spanner and a pressure guage so you can set the pump to 8 bar.

Gerry, In the U.S. A very small percentage of homes use Kerosene or even Oil as fuel to heat the house. I did a little research. Maby 2% use Kerosene and about 5% Fuel Oil. The majority use Natural gas or electricity. I do enjoy your posts tho. Thanks.

Hi Stanley. Thanks for the info. Here in Ireland Kero and diesed are popular in rural locations and gas in many cities. Air sourse heat pumps are getting more popular here now as there is an energy requirement on new homes. I will be making a waste oil burner soon with some parts from one of these burners but I have a lot to get through first. Appreciate your comment Cheers Gerry

Gerry, I traced the fault to a lack of electrical power to the burner, a wire had pulled out in the dual thermostat on the Amanda boiler. The thermostat screws are very rusted and getting at the connections is not easy. How are these thermostat units fixed to the boiler and how can they be removed/replaced? I can find nothing online about them, nor details of the Amanda boiler which I presume is obsolete... Many thanks for your great videos - very helpful!

Hi there can I ask if it is possible for the pump to only work intermittently? My boiler can run for 2 days then it just stops working. I have replaced solenoid, capacitor, photocell and even though I set my oil pressure to 8 bar a few days ago the pressure is now acting a bit erratic and not pressurising much. It looks to me like it is the oil pump but is there anything else that could cause the pump to act erratic before I go ordering a new one?

Gerry, I have a Riello RDB burner the same.. When switch heating on at the wall it doesnt do anything not even bring fan on unless you press the reset button on burner then you get the suction sound & it fires up.. Itl only manage say 20 mins or 45 if your lucky of an on / off cycle burning then stops & doesnt come on again.. So say if you left the house at 1pm with it on and came in at 6 itl be freezing. We have to keep going outside and pressing reset every 30 minutes or so to keep heat in the radiators in the house. What would be the issue ? Is it wrong pressure ? Faulty pump? Solenoid? Checked & cleaned the photocell is ok & the burner is getting oil feed ok i think to be fair the feed flexi pipe hooks back on itself before it goes into the burner but not sure if thats an issue? Be great if you could advise then il know what part to buy and fit before this cold weather hits us .. Good man yourself 👍 Thank you

@GerrysDiy
@GerrysDiy 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ross. The nozzle would have a hard time with the engine oil and would clog and the air mix would suffer because of the inconsistent fuel. A different setup can burn it though but would require a different burner and compressor. Cheers Gerry

Hi Gerry, wish I had watched this before stripping down my burner and replacing the fuel pump possibly unnecessarily (I did not bleed it thoroughly first). Could you help identify a suitable pressure gauge to buy? I saw someone else had asked for this before too. Also, in the video where you create one working burner from 3 scrap ones, towards the end, you show how to adjust the amount of air, and mention that you will demonstrate how to use this when the burner is in the boiler so that you can ensure you have a clean blue flame. I cannot find the video where you show how to do this? I am assuming there is somewhere that I can gain access to see the flame, and then adjust the screw to optimise the burn. Could you describe where I can get this view? Thanks for your help!

Hi Gerry can I ask a quick question. So our RDB has a leaky pump. When the engineer fits a new one he adjusts the pump to 7bar. As soon as he set the new pump to 7bar it leaks from the adjuster?? He has tried 3 new pumps. Riello aren’t much help?? Any ideas?? It’s a Grant 50/70 unit about 22 years old. It functions very well. Many Thanks

Remove the adjuster and clean the threads, Wrap some plummers tape around the threads and replace, Dont b shy use plenty of tape, Sounds like the housing has a slight imperfection. This should do the job. Let me know
@swisstoni01
@swisstoni01 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the reply. The unit is currently using its original pump which was being replaced because it was dripping kerosene. Is leaking kerosene a common fault?? Where would an older established pump leak from?? Also the engineer fitting the new pumps was adjusting the unit to 7bar. I note you were using 8bar. Was he using the correct pressure? Do some units utilise different pressures.
@philipfranklin5384
@philipfranklin5384 3 ай бұрын
@@swisstoni01 When replacing the pump, The pump is all u get, Sounds as if your adjuster has a fault, ie danaged or leaky thread so re-using it with a new pump wont solve the problem, U need to replace the pressure adjuster. 8 bar is the correct setting. Higher or lower would not cause a leak. B carful that the adjuster and pump has not already been cross threaded. If it has u will need to replace both items

@@danielgilroy267 Daniel. There's a rough test you can do on the solenoid to see if it is working. Take the solenoid off but leave it electrically connected and place a metal screw driver inside the hole. Power on the burner and when the solenoid gets powered it snould become magnetic. You will feel resistance when you try to move the screwdriver. If you have a meter you should get 100 Ohms resistancehe +/- 5 . Check for resistance with the solenoid plugged out of circuit. Hope this helps good luck Check this out bit.ly/2LIkzCD Cheers Gerry 👍

Hi Graham. Usually the burner is fine but the line is airlocked. There are a couple of ways to approach this. you can clear the line back into the the oil tank using low pressure compressed air. You will need to open the vent screw on the burner and blow the oil back into the tank. Make sure that you are not messing with the pressure screw. If you can wait I will have a video on this later in the week. Hope this helps Cheers Gerry

Gerry, there are several videos on KZbin concerning the very cheap Chinese van night heaters based on the Espacher design. They seem to work well and have quite sophisticated control systems. Just wondering if you had come across one as at only £130 it's very tempting!! Richard

I could kick myself. My riello burner packed up Saturday morning, I used the manufacturer troubleshoot table and googled advice and ended up changing the photocell, the nozzle, the controller and cleaned up without removing the electrodes. I had a spare pump but wasn't confident until I saw you do it. I also don't have the oil pressure gauge. Is the gauge a made up test jig or something you knocked up? I have to say you made a brilliant video. I just wish I had seen it 24hrs ago, my heating may have been running by now. Having to get an engineer out. Depressing. PS, have you done a vid showing how to change the electrode set and set them up??

My boiler not cutting in. But when I give the fan a spin it fires up. What do you think may be the problem? Pump. Or Solenoid ???

I think I have the same issue except my burner runs for about 2 minutes stops tries to ignite again and then fails. I see oil flow and igniter trying to ignite the oil flow but it fails and resets. Could this be a faulty pump is it not providing enough kerosene

I've watched all your vidios Jerry and followed you for a long time, but you've made a big mistake with this, I know you do this for a living just like I do, but I have to say that you haven't thought about this mate, there will be hundreds of oil engineers in Ireland and England thinking the same as me if they see this, showing this to the public is fine but you've missed the most important thing, the bloody spark won't make you jump a bit, it's direct from the transformer you touch it your dead, please address this straight away you and I know this because we do it every day the public don't, you have to be so careful what you put out there Jerry, love your vidios mate but please anyone got hurt not knowing this you would never forgive your self. Alan.

Ok, how many amps is it? It is the voltage that makes it jump the gap, but in an engine there is almost no amperage. It is the amperage that can be dangerous.
@slrs3908
@slrs3908 6 жыл бұрын
If it is coming through a transformer, doesnt the amperage go down as the volts go up? Im just askin because not all sparks are life threatening...so please explain.

SLRS I can’t tell you what the voltage is, but I can say many years ago when I did my training on oil boilers I was told be very carful as the voltage can easily kill.

@@pearcemachineshop5200 Alan, you intentions are probably pure, but I am thinking of the shock you get from a gas engine ignition spark, which will certainly get your attention real fast, but probably won't hurt you unless you have a pacemaker. So, in the sense of safety, I personally would like to know just how dangerous this is...if only to satisfy my own curiosity. At the same time, where I come from, you don't openly accuse a man of negligence (the nice way of putting it) and then respond with "I don't know" when asked for details. So, do you know, or did you just throw Jerry under the bus? Please provide references. ...and I was asking about the amperage, but voltage would be interesting too.

@@slrs3908 I would have to look it up, as for Jerry I think the guys done a great job and I've no intention of throwing him under the bus so to speak his oil burners have been great and that's an understatement, I mean no offence to any one least of all Jerry, I'll see what I can find out, but I will say the guy that taught me seamed to know is stuff if you know what I mean, the transformer ups the power considerably in order to make a very big spark, kerosean if not as easy to ignight as petrol as you know, hope that helps a bit. Alan.
