I love how DSO is one of those rare bands massaging my brain to feel wierd, but cool. How it doesnt let the resolution to come for a long time or even at all. The destabilization feeling is incredibly awesome. Yeh, its not just bands. Gyorgy Ligeti and Igor Stravinsky and many others do that as well, to step outside metal. Anyway, the funny thing about Katechon is that in the end, he does not just chain the antichrist. Antichrist has to come first, and only then the christ can come. I guess there is a queue of sorts for "coming". So in turn the protector against the antichrist also chains the christ too, while protecting against his negation. Hence the paradox of chaining the chainer.

Amazing work! There are so many good suggestions in the comments already, but they're pretty much all black metal with some death in there, so I'll also put in a general request for doom metal. I feel like doom metal has an image problem similar to black metal, only the opposite; people tend to see it as boring metal for stoners even though it often allows for things that just aren't possible with faster music.

Great video as always! But now you've mentioned microtones, which means I have to ask... Have you ever heard of a black metal project called Jute Gyte? From what I understand, most of their music is almost entirely microtonal, and I would be really interested to see what you think of it. I've been listening to them a lot lately to try to push my listening boundaries. In this video, pointing to microtonality, among other elements, as the "chaotic" counterpoint to other parts of the riff seems like an easy analogy to snap into (no offense; It made perfect sense when you explained it through the lens of the themes of the music, and I did find it really interesting), but when you're forced into a corner by the majority of the composition being in microtones, how would you approach it? I'm only aware of microtones in Ben Johnston's music (thanks to Neely) as well as I believe some... Turkish guitar traditions? There's likely a lot more I'm just plain unaware of. I think it could be a fascinating topic.
@tucker44593 жыл бұрын
Glad I’m not the only one asking for Jute Gyte on this channel :)
@metalmusictheory54013 жыл бұрын
Thanks! And haha yep this is definitely "microtonal lite" analysis, and I absolutely love Jute Gyte. Will definitely do a vid about him at some point-it will be a big project I think, the theory about microtonal stuff in Western music is still very much being invented! On the topic of other microtonal stuff: you might enjoy digging a bit into spectralist composers like Saariaho, Murail, and Grisey!
@Bennick3233 жыл бұрын
@@metalmusictheory5401 Will definitely check them out, thanks! Truth be told, I've been meaning to check out more composers, but it's a little odd for my modern, non-classical-music-adapted brain to get into because it'll be like "here's this piece... with 20 different versions by different orchestras which may have slightly different arrangements, recording setups, etc." when my brain really wants a definitive "studio" version, haha. One piece I consistently go back to though is Arvo Pärt's Tabula Rasa, especially the second movement "Silentium." I've been hoping to find others who approach that sort of sound, but I lack the vocabulary to search for them... Maybe, minimalist composition is what I'm looking for? I often see his work described that way.

1. Mikko Aspa's other band Clandestine Blaze has NS live members and sings songs like "Posession of Nordic Blood" and "Bloodsoil" 2. His side project Creamface is pornogrind on a label called Lolita Slavinder and the NS stuff definitely is included in DsO with titles about facist concepts like Furnaces of Palingenesia. In summation, don't promote this shit.

@bmfan3 жыл бұрын
@@aeameh No one can defend Mikko, being the edgelord he is, but if reading the lyrics to the new album makes you remotely think this is a glorification of fascism, or authoritarianism, I dunno what to say. It's rather obvious that they are condemning such behavior, and revealing the reality of this kind of authoritarian totalitarian rule. Under no circumstances would the band ever support anything said in these lyrics as something good. They are obsessed with Bataille, and transgression. The Order represents everything they vehemently hate.
@metalmusictheory54013 жыл бұрын
Thanks for bringing this up! I should have addressed it in the video. I absolutely condemn NS music and ideology (and, while we're at it, racism, homophobia, transphobia, classism, sexism, and bigotry of all types-not that I've heard any of those claims about DSO, but just for the record). From my research and thinking (which may be incomplete), I don't consider DSO (at least from the Chaining the Katechon middle era, which is what I know best) to be tainted with this ideology. Based on Aspa's peripheral role, the band's overall secrecy, and my interpretation of their philosophy based on lyrics etc as generally nihilist and satanist in ways that are contradictory to fascism, I don't feel any more uncomfortable listening to their music than I do most black metal (in the sense that most people in black metal are probably not many degrees of separation away from nasty people). I'm not someone who will say that metal (or music analysis) and politics should be kept separate, and the last thing I want to be is someone who makes excuses for bands with awful views, or tries to justify a band's politics based on the "quality" of their music. And maybe my thinking will change and I'll get rid of this video. But I think it benefits the scene to be detailed and critical when thinking about these sorts of links, and everyone has to make these decisions for themselves. I respect your position; for my part, right now I don't feel it's a contradiction of my values to post this video. There's some detailed discussion of this sort of thing around the new album (which does make me a little more uncomfortable than the music I talk about in this video) here, if you or anyone reading this is interested (read for the responses mostly): www.reddit.com/r/DeathspellOmega/comments/bk4n4k/the_furnaces_of_palingenesia_hopes_expectations/
