In this video I look at the history of the 7 rem mag and the model 700, and do some comparisons beween other 7mm rifle cartridges like the 28 Nosler, 7mm Weatherby, 280 and 280 Ackley Improved. I compare it to the 264 win mag and the winchester model 70 as well.

I love my 7mm. I think it's one of the most versatile rounds out there. There is nothing it can't drop. I have my 7mm in the Winchester model 70. It's a great rifle and I wouldn't change it for anything

Years ago I bought a 7MM Rem Mag in a Browning. For whatever reason I could never get that rifle to group a 1 MOA no matter what bullet powder combination I tried so I sold the gun. Recently I came across a Weatherby in 7 Mag that the gun shop could not sell. He said people didn’t like the green stock on the rifle. He made me a good deal on the gun so I decided to give the 7 Mag another go. The gun has a 9 1/2 twist and with both 150 and 160 gr bullets I am not disappointed in my purchase.

My first rifle was a model 700 BDL in 7MM REM MAG that would shoot 5/8” groups with 160 Partitions at 2965 fps using IMR 4831 at one grain below max. As you said, it simply worked. Unfortunately, it was stolen out of my buddy’s truck three days after I killed a 170” plus mulie on my uncle’s ranch. Unfortunately, my buddy’s 270 was stolen as well. I still predominately use the 7MM Mag and probably always will!

I love listening there buddy awesome radio😁👍👍 I've finished my uncle's 7RemMag 175 Partition, now im currently working on the 160 Accubond. We got great results today, he got awesome groups out to 300yds. He got small overlapping groups inside of a dime. Took years to finally produce great groups. Alot of trial and error. You cant go wrong with the 7RemMag with a 26" barrel for hunting big game👍👍

The first set of dies were stamped 280-338 Magnum and was developed by Les Bowman in the 1960 in Northwest Wyoming. Les offered this to Remington and Remington called it the 7MM Rem Mag. Les guided two people from Remington on a hunting trip and they shot the 280-338 and this is how it started.

Bought a 700 BDL in 7mm Rem Mag in the mid seventies, finally settled on Hornady’s 162 grainers over a near max dose of IMR 4350 in the late eighties. Could have been one load shooter earlier, but, one seems to learn when one is ready to learn.

@@twolak1972There is not a penny's worth of difference between the 7mm Wby and the 7mm Stw. The 7mm Rem is much closer to 7mm Wsm performance wise. To match the Wby you'd need another 4000+ PSI chamber pressure, well above the safe threshold.

I agree about the model 70. Getting away from the full Mauser claw extractor was NOT what the consumer wanted. There's an entire category titled Pre-64 Winchesters for a reason. However, push feed is in darn near everything now. If you're going to build a custom gun, more than likely, it's going to have a Model 700 type action. My favorite action of all time is the Weatherby Mk 5 which is a push feed. As a contrast, 7mm Rem mag would be interesting in a BAR Mk II safari with BOSS--the BOSS really does work to tune the barrel for different bullet weights as I learned with a 30-06 BAR. It's loud AF, though. Many people didn't like the BOSS system for that reason. My BAR Mk2 was sub MOA all day long......people don't believe it, but it was. It was one of the greatest regrets of my life to sell that gun.....

Bought a vanguard 7 RM about 10 months ago. Came with muzzle brake which makes it surprisingly pleasant to shoot at range. Bedded the action then the barrel and played around with about 5 different factory loads. Easily shoots all the loads sub moa after the bedding jobs. Federal terminal accent gets down in the 1/2 moa range. Ill play with it out to 750 yds with very satisfactory results. Haven't hunted with it but on paper it has very satisfactory results within reasonable hunting ranges up to elk size animals and recoil should be manageable for most everyone. 7mm bullets just seem to be the sweet spot for a lot of things.

I’d rather have a heavier bullet in the 7 rem mag for just about all applications except for long shots across ag fields on deer. I could see a 150 gr bullet used on elk if it’s mono-metal construction. Speed isn’t everything. It can be counter-productive, in fact.

150 grain is an amazing sweet spot for 7mm Rem mag. It delivers the most energy down range of all the grains and is very tolerable for recoil. I use 150 for deer, black bear, moose, chipmunks. If I'm walking bush, though, nothing beats the 30-06 pump action with raised scope. Can still use iron sights for fast acquisition and shots on target, but also still has a 3-9x50 if the shot needs to be longer. Pretty much the only 2 guns I use. I used to have a lever 30-30, but it didn't shoot any faster than my pump and couldn't shoot out as far. Not to mention have nowhere near as good ballistics. It just makes a 30-30 obsolete.

I have a 90's era browning a bolt stainless stalker in 7mm rem mag. I live and hunt out west for elk, mule deer, black bear, etc... I love the balance of recoil vs. downrange energy of the 7 mag. The problem I am having is accuracy. I am wanting to get into longer range hunting at 500+ yards or so. The problem with this gun is accuracy. I probably average 1.5-2.0 inch groups. If I can't get it down to MOA or better, there is no point reaching past 500 or so. What accuracy are other people seeing with factory rifles using factory ammo? Seems like the newer creedmoor and PRC cartridges offer better accuracy out of the box.

More gun than needed for Bambi. It liked a max charge of IMR 4350 and 140gr Nosler ballistic tip. Lot of wasted meat. Went back to the 30-06 . Think the 280 is a better all around cartridge. Just me.

@Jess Hadlock I will agree the 7 mags are best served with 160 and 175 grain bullet . The sectional density of 175gr 7mm bullet is legendary for penitration. I was younger then and loaded with the 140 to beat the 270 Winchester I first used to hunt deer. I use the 180 slowed down in my 30-06 hand loads . Think about using the 200/220 grain bullets because 200yards is a long shot in the east Texas piney woods. I look at the 30-06 as a 30-30 Winchester magnum.

Its a glorified 7mm express (280 Rem) But everything Remington did seemed to fail (8mm Rem Mag) My god .323 If they made it the .338 Rem mag....or 308 Rem Mag with the same case? that would sell Anyway dont waste your time with the .284's go to .308 and get a 300 WM. I bet if Remington was still in business they would come out with a .311 Rem Mag or some other calibre that you cant find a Good bullet in. The 7mm STW should have been the 7mm RM. The 7mm Rem Mag should have been the Mashburn Super that Warren Page appealed to Remington to commercialize. But Remington wanted something with moderate recoil that wouldn't develop the early reputation as a barrel burner that the .264 Win was already acquiring. So they focused on a wildcat based on a necked down .338 Win, did some research at the Bowman Ranch, and finalized on what we now know as the 7mm Rem Mag, introduced with the M700 in what is surely one of the most classy dynamic duos in sporting rifle history. The only reason to skip the .284s and get a .300 Win Mag is if you want to absorb 30% more recoil for the same effect downrange. If you're a masochist who enjoys taking punishment for the sake of punishment, with nothing to show for it, by all means, get a .300 Win and almost literally knock yourself out. My brother and I had ourselves a little arms race when we were a younger, and full of piss and vinegar. He had to one up my 7mm Rem Mag, so he got a .300 Win Mag. Yeah, the paper ballistics were impressive, but the game we shot must not have read ballistics charts, because they didn't seem any more impressed with the .300 Win than they did with the 7mm Rem. After about a decade and a buttload of animals, my brother begrudgingly admitted the .300 Win didn't seem to kill animals any more dead any faster than the 7mm Rem Mag, and certainly not enough to justify the added recoil tax at the shoulder. I still slay with that 7mm Rem Mag. My brother quietly retired the .300 when he inherited a .30-06 from our grandpa. Getting the downrange performance of the .300 Win with the recoil of the 06 is what makes the 7mm Rem so special. It is as close to something for nothing as you get in physics.

I have to agree. Deer hunted with one for year. Not a fun gun to shoot like 223 or pistole cartridge lever actions. Too expensive to load for and recoil a litte to much for a day of plinking. It is a meat gun for sure. Sometimes less experience riflemen thinks it is a bolt of lightning from the Greek Gods and can make up for poor marksmanship. I help to track many deer wounded with the 7mm mag. I went full circle back to the trusty rusty 30-06 out of spite from all the bs of how great the 7mm mag is. It is great only in the right hands of a good hunter and marksman. I think the big powerful magnums takes more skill to master and take advantage of the performance of it. The 6.5 Creedmore is popular for a reason. Heavy advertising and easier to master than a Magnum.

SOUNDS LIKE BULL AND SMELLS LIKE TRUMP. My 7mm Rem has dropped everything I've aimed at in 40 yrs. No searching for wounded game. I call bs.

My only complaint about the 7mm Rem Mag is the belt. Reloading 7 Rem Mag cases can be an issue after several reloads. I am looking at purchasing a special forming die to resize up to the belt. I am lookin at going to the 280 AI for target and hunting. I will always have a 7 Rem Mag.

Yeah the belt is a minor detraction on an otherwise great cartridge.

@@hopefulballistics Yes the bulge above the belt is a pain. I have shot 30.06 rifles with more recoil than my 7mm Remmie. It is a flat shooter. I like your videos.
