Interesting review. It should be noted that clay needs to be used for accurate backface deformation, the wood is not an accurate form of measurement or assessment regarding impact of different calibers. I do wish you would have dismantled the entire panel so we could all see the extent and area of protection from the level 3/4 hex mosaic pattern rifle rated protection. We do not know how much of the soft armor area the hex pattern covers. Also it appears beginning at strike face to wear face the vest is layered: 1. PE layers 2. Mosaic hex pattern more than likely constructed of Silicon Carbide 3. Aramid layers 4. PE layers Is the mosaic held together by an adhesive? How durable will that be also considering extreme environment temperatures subjected to the user.

My take-away from it was that the concept was incredibly sound, but it might've needed more development, specifically that the glue used was possibly suspect under harsh conditions, but different manufacturing methods might've helped. And, importantly, the US Government intentionally torpedoed it at every opportunity to protect crony contracts with existing body armor manufacturers, instead of putting our troops first. Just like when the M16 was introduced.

Impressive, I saw an add on FB and I thought BS. It makes more sense why the Military wants to upgrade from 5.56. Armor technology is becoming cheap enough for average folks to have access to Armor that can defeat the standard military round. When they come out with a AP version of the new .277 Fury. I'd imagine the NIJ is going to need to develop a level V standard.
@Tremulousnut4 жыл бұрын
For the most part NIJ is outdated when it comes to calibers. For example, there are 50 BMG defeating armour, but it's labeled as level 4 because that's as high as it will go. That being said, there isn't anything better as of this moment, a lot of external/independent tests out there are bullshit, because they don't account for environmental degradation of armour.
@Robert-qm7yi4 жыл бұрын
Justin Kirk The military won't get rid of 5.56, since the war on terror started we have had readily available rifle plates for everyone and nobody complained because the people we fight don't have them. So this armor (which might be considered level 3) is made of 1 layer of kevlar in the front, a flexible layer of ceramic tiles, and at least 14 layers of more kevlar. Safe Life offers a bundle package. It's a concealable vest rated at level 3 for pistols up to 44 mag then a ceramic plate in conjunction with uping the rating to level 4 rifle up to 30.06 AP. Complete vest weighs 19 lbs. I added 3/16 steel plates between the soft armor and the ceramic plate and increased the rating to 4 plus. It can now stop anything below a 50 Cal and with the steel plate behind the ceramic plate but in front of the soft armor their is no noticeable bulge into the soft armor. Total weight now with the added steal plates is 25 lbs. That's front and back with side protection as well. I'm about as protected as I can get at a cost of 1200 bucks but I know I can take a 300 win mag shot and not only survive but after getting up stay in the fight. That kinetic energy packs a punch and will knock you down but at least you can get back up instead of going to the hospital or worse the morgue.
So panel is made with Dyneema on front and back and in the middle, it has Kevlar "pouch" and inside in the pouch is hexagon shape ceramic tiles. More interesting would be see, how this vest work when it is not placed flat. Like when it is contoured on the wearer's body, like in the sides. How well these ceramic tiles work then when panel is curved. Does the space between ceramic tiles come larger when ballistic panel is curved? Will the tiles still break the bullet or does it go thru space between ceramic tiles? Remember that NIJ standard test is made usually on flat surface and the test vest is placed flat too. And if you want to be more like NIJ precise, it states armor test distance: Handgun Rounds: 16.4 ft ±3.28 ft Rife Rounds: 49.2 ft ±3.28 ft. Also the backing material should be more softer, not these wooden blanks.
@freefieldtraining4 жыл бұрын
Our goal is not to be more like the NIJ testing. The armor is sent to a lab for that. We are trying to replicate the worst case situation to give people a realistic expectation of performance in field conditions. (point blank range, right over a bone) the next test will be the armor curved around a gel torso, unless I can find a hard immovable torso. Though given the lab results I don't expect any of that to be an issue. Any other ideas?
@AR-tt8rt4 жыл бұрын
@@freefieldtraining Gel torso is great idea. I know and my opinion is that NIJ a bit "old" and clinical test now days, as compared to real world scenarios. But of course officially, it gives good reference and starting points. The weak point can be side shot on the curved panel. But you never know before that is tested.
@freefieldtraining4 жыл бұрын
@@AR-tt8rt Well the lab has already tested to the standards. According to the lab guys at shot they tried to get rounds to go between the panels and were unable to because of the geometry. We shall certainly give it the good ol college try as well though so people can see. I'll have to figure out a way to test it where it hits the separation points. I'm open to suggestions on that front.

NIJ isn't the end-all-be-all, unless you work somewhere that requires NIJ certification, I would use it as a starting point, but independent ballistics labs can be just as rigorous, especially those on the NIJ approved list.

If it requires something solid behind it, it will not be as effective in that application.

Example, Lets say stuff pops off, all out chaos, you'll have the knuckle heads robbing, murdering and doing many potshots at anyone, especially leo's and other first responder's all out of ignorance, it'll basically be wild, wild west again publically across the usa.... a vest and person will wear out fast with multiple shots, etc... Know what I mean????

Good test, I wear a 3a+ (special threats) version of this same vest. Have for 2 and a half years now, every day. I did Yoga in it for almost a year. This higher rated model looks pretty sweet, I'll definitely consider it

Why the heck would you do yoga in body armor 😂
@justsomeguy39314 жыл бұрын
@@RoboBreaker 1. To test my flexibility in the armor. If I can go full pretzel status in it, it shouldn't inhibit me! Doing Yoga in just the armor, there was only a half dozen positions and locations it inhibited me - impressive! 2. If I can do Yoga in my armor, I can consider the armor one step closer to being mastered. Also to make Yoga harder and more intense for more gains, which was cool at first; and is helpful for weight lifting or hitting the heavy bag etc. But it throws off body alignment in Yoga, and the extra weight makes some thing less stable or even safe. So now it sits in the corner with my props and strap as I practice Yoga. 3. I go everywhere armed and armored; except when hanging out at home, sleeping, or showering. I did Yoga at the college, past the dreaded "no guns allowed" sign - a place evil/crazy people often to to slaughter innocents. I want my armor. I can wear my armor onto airplanes or into major sporting events, and just did recently. 4. It's on me for a large portion of every one of my days for exercise, to get more used to it. So when/if I have to move in it, I'll have all those miles and thousands of hours moving it with me. It has made a difference, even when it took months to get there. Also, I had worn it for almost a year and a half straight by the time I was starting serious formal Yoga training, almost literally never taking it off, to get used to it. I was as used it to as I was going to get at that point lol. It was time to go I don't think I'm the first person in history to do armored Yoga. They have several positions named "warrior #" that are almost exactly like a few very common martial arts stances for unarmed and melee across cultures and times. If I can do Yoga well in full plate or Modern battle rattle, I'll have a million views on the intertubez...

@@justsomeguy3931 How concealable or how thick is it compared to a standard issued level II in an internal carrier? I'd rather not dish out my own money but if it works then hey, why not.
@justsomeguy39314 жыл бұрын
@@FA2training It's thin enough that it goes unnoticed except from behind, where people think it's a back brace lol. If I was to have it custom fit to me (like my next armor of the same 3a+ rating will be) it wouldn't be so bad. It is thick enough that a slight adjustment to sitting in a car is needed to avoid lower back strain. I'm big into Yoga tho, so I notice what a lot of other people don't. Here's what I wear and why (beyond my desire to stop 9mm FMJ), I'm sure the thickness and other stats are on the company website: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ooisg3mXbL-VoZo For my part, I'm so used to it that I sometimes forget it after changing in the locker room at the gym (Yes, I work out in my armor!), because wearing it and not wearing it feel exactly the same lolz Beyond just stopping the round, the thicker armor will mean I take less bashing damage from pure concussive force. I'd rather not die or be so badly injured from bullets that are already stopped. Some level 2 armor will stop .45 ACP 230 grain FMJ, but i'd rather have 3a+ armor on when show with that round than just level 2!

@@justsomeguy3931 heh, I figured as much. I feel like if you get some bigger shoulder and upper arms, it might off set the look. The only thing that might be an issue is sitting for extended periods of time then being sore and stiff then trying to move around doing whatever at a fast pace might not be less than ideal haha. Then again, that the price to out weigh. I'm gonna see if I can get approved for one of these. Any insight on spike or slash protection? I feel that is more of the worry.
