Awesome. I have an original Royal Navy cap from the H.M.S. Euryalus! Found it in an antique store here in New England, U.S.A. back at the beginning of the 2010s. This is the first time I’ve heard the ship mentioned in a KZbin history video. Really neat!

Great video. My dad was a young 19 year old signalman on the Prince Robert when she was in Hong Kong for the surrender. I have a few pictures of him that were taken there at the time, he ended up going to the prison in Kowloon to help with some of the Canadian prisoners. I still have a few of the telegrams he sent as well as his crossing the line certificate etc.

Where did you acquire the ratings cap? is there any reasonably priced reproductions that you know of available in the US? I'm 12 but I really want to get into royal navy re enacting.

Sorry but it wasn't Seaforths that we sent..... we sent two Battalions on a suicide mission to appease British demands. The battalions were the Royal Rifles of Canada from Quebec originally although many men from other provinces served with them. The other regiment was the Winnipeg Grenadiers. In fact John Robert Osborne from the Grenadiers was awarded a VC during the fall of Hong Kong. I am privileged to have know a vet who survived the battle and four years of Japanese hospitality.

Slightly deaf! LOL To be honest I am very impressed that you mention Canada!!!!!! We Canadians sometimes feel left out of the narrative..... Monty this and Patton that...... we truly were the Cinderella Army in WWII and our contributions in the First War are largely ignored in most documentaries and attributed to the British........... thanks for the correction......... I will have to start wearing hearing protection on the range! LOL

Always thought that the British Army should have kept the Lanchester while issuing the Sten to the Home Guard, not even bother fooling around with Thompsons.

The Army never contracted for the Lanchester, it was procured by the RAF and RN, the RAF backed out and the RN took them all.

@@RiflemanMoore Yeah you're right. The army started thinkering with the Thompsons and the RAF spent a bunch of money for a Smith&Wesson carbine (forgotten weapons has a video on that and the gun was a waste of money). Poor old Lanchester.

Lesson learnt = purchase an up to date functioning system in peacetime. Arguably we have the HK/SIG systems in place currently. For better or for worse.

The closest you'd get in terms of the look of the thing are Royal Marines in BD, they did use the Lanchester and it's an interesting look to say the least.

Most Royal Navy personel wore white kit most photos of the Hong Kong liberation everyone is in whites.

Not so, there are many photos of RN 'platoons' in khaki, I would be happy to share some if you care to drop me an email. The RCN, by contrast seem to have exclusively worn white.

@@RiflemanMoore Ah cheers, on the Naval base Im on now there are many framed photographs of the retaking, all of the Royal Navy men are in full tropical whites. A mixture of both probally. They would be Naval Divisions if ashore.
