Rig Rundown - Steel Panther's Satchel [2015]

We caught up with Satchel, the guitarist for ’80s shock-rockers Steel Panther, during a stop in Des Moines, IA, at the Val Air Ballroom. Even though his rig is rather simple, Satchel took the time to discuss his signature Kramer, high-gain amps, and his time spent on safari in Africa.
When you shred like Satchel, the only logical choice is to play our own signature models. Other than the tunings and finishes, the collection of flamboyant guitars shown here are nearly identical. Each one features a maple body with an oiled maple neck, Floyd Rose tremolo, and Seymour Duncan pickups (SH-4 and SH-2n).

There should be a Steel Panther movie, I would cast Ben Stiller as their Tour Manager, Tenacious D as a rival band called Titanium Tiger and have Will Ferrell play a metal guitar legend who is living recluse hiding from the public because he quit music after a tragic accident that happened because his solo was so killer it actually made the entire audience catatonic. Satchel is losing his love for rock and roll and starts questioning his lifestyle. He meets Will Ferrell who helps him regain his love for rock and roll and becomes his mentor. It would be a total cliche story and full of dick and fart jokes, very immature and probably get 1 star but be a cult classic. I seriously want this movie made.

I didn't attend the Guitar Institute of Technology but had friends that did in the mid 1980's. Satchel and Paul Gilbert are buddies and are both students and instructors there. The man can play. Steel Panther are about having a good time and still delivering quality rock n roll and metal. If you leave a Steel Panther show without a smile on your face something is wrong.

I took her to see them a few years ago (my fifth or sixth time seeing them at that point) and man, she couldn't find a good time there if it smacked her in the face. Toxic Potato I understand that, it is a great feeling. Its also how most big rockers start out. I mean take Satchel, he was in many,many bands that played to small crowds before Steel Panther. Sometimes some people are an exception, he did what he loved and kept at it and here he is now, being endorsed by Kramer and featuring in magazines and interviews worldwide. But then again, sometimes playing to small crowds and just doing what you love (who cares about the money, any money is good money!) is good enough. Not everyone wants to be a big rockstar! Its tough.

Cool video, nice to see the gear finally, but man... the original Satchel rundown with Rebecca Dirks was a work of art. The gear interview was actually solid, it never seemed forced or fake, and the innuendos were non stop. Awesome as always! Satchel is a funny guy and as we all know, can play like no ones business as well. Used to see these guys before they started Steel Panther playing 80's metal covers in clubs in San Diego back oh 10-15 years ago, damn time flies, airplanes crash. Anyways, it was always a great time seeing them back then and Satchel, man an effortless shred master, especially the Van Halen shite, just ripping it out SofaKing good. So great to see them having their SP success and giving people some laughs and fun along with their great original music.
