Pete, I've been following your family almost from the beginning....while I'm not entirely sure the Laser is the best boat to learn on, I'm sure you'll figure it out. My advice to you is to go out with an experienced sailor and learn the basics. You'll learn all you NEED to know in a weekend, and then spend the rest of your life honing your skills. Also, sailing for dummies is an excellent resource (read it....and then it all makes more sense when you've gotten a little experience and then read it again). Respect the water....especially in those little boats. Experience is something you get right after it would have been helpful.

Hey Peter, you have a great project there. Something for everyone to use on the island would be one of the battery powered pressure washers. I see you have several brands of cordless tools. Most if the manufacturers have their own version of a power washer. No need for running water as they can suck water from a bucket or right out of the lake. Very good to have around. Can’t wait to see you out sailing! Just watch that boom when she comes around! 💯

Lasers carry a lot of sail area relative to the size of the boat. Do your homework on using outhaul etc. to de-power the sail in heavy air. Sailing can be incredibly challenging and demanding, but so rewarding and peaceful.

Great video, Peter! Both my kids grew up sailing. My son (24) has a laser like you do, which he bought used and restored as you have, and he loves to sail it! He and his sister (22) both learned on lasers through our yacht club, and though they’ve sailed on bigger boats we sailed as a family, still love the Laser best!

Youll have fun, but the one and only thing I can warn you about, is getting hit by the boom when jibing. It can whip around quick and knock you right out cold and send you overboard! Stay safe!

Lisa not Bob. , Just started to watch your Chanel. Love your family’s Chanel so I knew yours would be great. My son had a Laser and sailed in many regatta’s . He coached sailing as well. This was a great adventure for him to sail on many different oceans. So funny he lives near the mountains now and is a hiker outdoors person. Teach his two young boys all about the outdoors. They are actually on a camping trip right now. I know he’ll get back to sailing someday, but he is having a blast with outdoor adventures..

Wishing I was nearby. I use to race these guys, along with other classes. I'd love to teach you. Dagger board..... without it the wind will just blow the boat sideways. Only time you pull it up is on a run, which is dead downwind. Anyway... I'm envious. ❤❤

This will be so much fun! My Dad taught us all to sail on a Porpoise - a little easier than the Laser. He spent a lot of time showing us how to tack ( turn into the wind to get back home) - and usually lost his sunglasses each time. There are alot of sunglasses at the bottom of our lake!

I know you’ll figure this out in your research but a dagger board stays in pretty much all the time when you’re in the water and is what gives you the ability to track on a straight line. The only time it would come up and out is as you are approaching shallow waters or approaching the shoreline. You will have a blast. I grew up with a Sunfish sailboat and a Laser was considered the higher performing, faster cousin to the Sunfish. Enjoy my friend.

And if you leave it in the water then derig it first. Any gust of wind will blow it over. The dagger board stops it going sideways, it is not a keel. You will offset the force of the wind when you are in the boat just the same as a sailboard. Watch some clips of laser sailing and especially capsize recovery.
