What? You didn't know? Tommy was actually more well-known for his electric guitar playing early in his life. He did play a lot of acoustic back then too, but his main gig was playing electric guitar, and he was blowing the world away. Long before he started doing mostly acoustic gigs, Chet Atkins called Tommy: "One of the VERY few REAL guitarists who can do it all"...........and that's back when Tommy was playing mostly electric.
@JoeDeCarlo-km9nf3 ай бұрын
@@RobertRizzo-p6u I know what you mean. I was in a band with an acoustic guitar player who could not adjust to playing an electric guitar because the strings are so much lighter. It takes a skilled touch to be able to switch from heavy acoustic strings, to light electric strings. No surprise that Tommy can do both.

As an old guitar player and all around music geek . . . this is top notch playing. I love Kenny, particularly with Marty Stuart. I had the pleasure of seeing TE play a show in Key West, Florida a couple years ago. While I normally hate the GOAT debate, in basketball or music, IMO, Tommy is the greatest guitarist, acoustic and electric, in the history of guitar because he plays at the top level in so many different genres. Yeah, I said it!
@mkii19642 жыл бұрын
No such thing as GOAT guitarist, but if there was it would be Tommy 😉

Tommy Emmanuel plays in nearly all genres with great technical and emotive ability. An all time great, but there are many others, modest men but equally as skilled with huge repertoires: Danny Gatton, Roy Buchanan, Grady Martin, Roy Clark, Atkins, Jerry Reed, and so on…. What is apparent, is the naivete of particular sources reflexively naming Jimi Hendrix the “greatest guitarist of all time.” There is no such thing (and it certainly wasn’t Jimi Hendrix).
@BCDanno632 жыл бұрын

@@commanderthorkilj.amundsen3426 Hi Commander! As I said. I hate the GOAT debate, because the many different genres of music are not usually considered, which Is why I think TE is a cut above all of the players you mentioned because he is phenomenal in all genres. BTW, I am very familiar with all of the players you mentioned which I notice are mostly "Country" players. So many great players . . . Joe Pass, Martin Taylor, Chet Atkins, Django, Segovia, Brad Paisley, Johnny Hiland, Glen Campbell etc. All are great players, but mostly in their own genre which is what, IMO, separates TE from everyone. It's funny, I have probably commented on a dozen guitar websites that Jimi, unique, influential guitarist that he was, is NOT the GOAT, although I am sure he could outrock Segovia! Anyway, I am aware of the internal contradictions of my comment, (I don't think the GOAT debate is legit, but TE is the GOAT???), but it did encourage some interesting discussion. Regards.
@commanderthorkilj.amundsen34262 жыл бұрын
@@joebikeguy6669 The guitarists I mentioned were included because they play similar style and type of music to Tommy Emmanuel, and several of them are cited by Tommy himself as his inspiration that he strives towards. I have seen most of the greats play live, in numerous genres, and in bands myself since the 60s. There is no single “greatest” or “best” guitarist. Too many genres, too many metrics to employ. And, really great musicians, don’t view it as a competition. Certainly Shawn Lane, Jason Becker, Alan Holdsworth, would be included by many. Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery, Al DiMeola, Paco DeLucia, Lenny Breau. And if one enjoys Hendrix’ style they would have to include the great-under-recognized talent of Terry Kath. As an acronymous term, and even more so as a concept, GOAT seems over-applied nowadays.
